A New Hope: The Biggs+ edit (* unfinished project *)

I have no real skill with editing, but I am going to try my hand at an (initially anyway) simple goal- reinserting the Biggs/Tosche stations scenes into the movie. That’s my primary goal and i’d be happy with just that.

My “stretch” goal, so to speak, is to cut out another scene that the Biggs scenes mostly make redundant- the “It’s only one more season” dinner scene (at least the parts that repeat the information from the Biggs scenes).
I’ve become convinced (this might be a common filmmaking thing, I don’t know) that Lucas had multiple scenes telling the audience similar information (not only the two i’ve been talking about, but also the redundant information in the Han/Jabba SE scene) in order to be able to really shape the film in the editing room by giving himself multiple attack vectors.
It is for this reason that I think some of the dinner scene can go without losing anything- I think it was designed to.

Any thoughts on my ideas?

P.S.
The other two stretch changes I would make would be to delete the Jabba scene (I’d be working off the Blu Ray), and to alter the colors to make them look less garish.

What you might consider is cutting both scenes to remove the redundancy and make both move faster. The edits we have for the Biggs scenes are just the raw dailies. Had Lucas used them he would have cut and tweaked them to flow better and move faster. And some of the things Biggs says don’t fit with the larger continuity so it would be nice to see those edited out.

And the redundancy between the Jabba and Greedo scenes can be fixed by changing the subtitles to the Huttese lines. Greedo’s lines were changes when the Jabba scene was cut.

It may be worth considering working from alternative source than the official blu ray - as yotsuya points out the quality of the Biggs scenes aren’t that great - it may be easier to / blend in those scenes ‘better’ using a more ‘raw’ looking source? Maybe something like 4K77 or a source with a grindhouse style feel to it?

Just an idea - good luck with it mate.

In my excitement, I may have jumped the gun. The video editing software I was planning on using is giving me problems. Also the source I was planning to use for the Biggs scenes is no longer online, so I may have to rip the scene from youtube, making this project less of a watchable movie and more of a proof of concept.
Will report back, thank you to the responses so far, I have taken them all under consideration.

Hey Biggs, which version of the deleted scene were you planning to use that is offline now?

Someone could add to this or correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought I remember seeing someone trying to polish that deleted scene so it could be usable, since as-is it is very dirty.

Maybe someone knows what I’m talking about, but I would suggest going through both the fan edit threads and the preservation threads.

I think there is someone who was fixing up the deleted scene of Luke looking up at the space battle, and I think he said he was also going to work on the Tosche station scenes. If you find those threads you could try to message those people directly about it.

Otherwise, I’d suggest going with oojason’s idea, and try to have the film match the source, giving the movie a grindhouse or discovered rough cut feel. I definitely think it would be cool to have an extended edition of the film in that sort of style.

EDIT: I also know that some people were attempting to work on recreating an earlier cut of the film that was very inferior to final version. I’m not sure if they ever finished it but I think that would be a wonderful project that could demonstrate what could have been and the power of editing.

Good advice, and yeah, I did plan to grab a copy of the special features disc from a… website, but it’s not there anymore.
I do think I might go the grindhouse route with something from the Spleen, I just wish my footage wasn’t run through YouTube compression.

Have you tried messaging the person about getting a copy of the original video?

Forgive me if I’m wrong (I have no idea) but is there any non-pirating way to obtain the Biggs Scenes? His mention of “off the blueray” suggests he is using his own copy, so that copy must not have the scenes. Does any copy have the scenes?

The Anchorhead scenes are on the 9-disc complete saga BR set, I believe, but it didn’t sound like OP had that disc from what he said in this thread (pre-ban).

You tube would be the worst source to use. There are better out there. Rips of the BR for instance. I personally have the BR set.

Pretty sure he was dropping some hints that he didn’t own copies of whatever he was trying to use. Piracy

I thought he got banned because he was being a dingus in his other thread?

What degree of Dingus, between 1 and HereKitty?

There would have been a more public warning for him to stop being a dingus if that were the case.

There was in the other thread. But I believe he was asking for people to send him material readily available on DVD IIRC?

And anyone should know that if you don’t own something and it isn’t available any longer, ebay is a good source. I got my UK 2 disc DVD sets that way. But I bough the 2004 DVD, the 2006 US DVD, the 2011 Blu-ray 9 disc set, and the newer Blu-ray/DVD trilogy box sets (I wanted the 5.1 mix off the DVD’s).

Hinting at pirating content, which puts this whole website and fanediting & fan restoration as a whole at risk.

Somewhat getting this thread back on track, does anyone want to see this edit? I could throw something together with the Biggs scenes with the SSE (or something else if someone suggests) so it’s not as jarring going from the crisp BR to the dirty deleted footage.

If you guys realy want to see the scene atleast close to completed, i can fill in, since my primary skill is foley and video editing, i basicly finished the scenes, complete with music cues, i think ill upload a video-less version to youtube, just so it wont be counted as infrigement, probably only using stills, i should mention i used a small protion of the radio drama’s voices to replace some of the poor line delivery, and poor audio quality
