SOLO: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas Thread — Page 5

Going back to my intention to re-introduce the FOX 'fanfare music and logo to kick off these ‘standalone’ movies for nostalgia’s sake for myself - well, I’ve now thought of a different ‘hybrid’ idea which I might use instead -

As the fanfare music begins to play out, I’d REPLACE the ‘20th Century Fox logo’ portion with the familiar receding STAR WARS title against a black starfield instead…before the usual transition to the ‘Lucasfilm logo’ portion for the rest of the fanfare, as we then get to the silent blue intro. wording.

I haven’t got time to organise an example clip, but here’s some pics to give an idea of how it would now look at the start of my intended new opening of SOLO for instance -

FOX ‘fanfare’ begins as we see…

FOX ‘fanfare’ ends as usual, then silence…

And we open on this planetary sunrise instead, before seeing Han and Chewie introduced as buddies soon after…

So seeing as I don’t intend to attach any form of full-blown, made up ‘scroll wording’ to these ‘standalones’ for myself, this should turn out to be just the kind of ‘Star Warsy’ intro. I’ve been looking for. 😃

(by the way paja - I notice that you seem to have mixed up your franchises in your thread title…) 😉

Cut L3-37 out completely since she’s simply there to make Lando look like a panasexual character, which he isn’t.

I don’t see the relation between L3 and Lando’s sexuality (besides that robot ass), or why his sexuality is even important

One could achieve the same effect by simply cutting about three or four of her lines. That being said, nothing she said actually gave any credence to the pansexual Lando story. Most of that stuff said far more about L3 than it did Lando.

I found the constant barrage of equal rights jokes to be far more distracting. The first quip was quite funny, but by the end of the Kessel sequence it was just a chore. And even that can be fixed by removing just a few lines.

Very much looking forward to seeing what some of the talented Editors on here come up with for Solo - seems there’ll be some considerable additional content to pour over for possible inclusion - nice one 😃

I am curious what people will come up with. Just overall things without seeing it since May…

*Love a crawl like RogueLeader did with his Rogue one Edit. Use that to explain some things and maybe shoot to the chase scene? Granted, watched it once and need to see the movie again for the flow.
*Add either alient language or distrot Durant’s voice. Nothing against his character, but he sounded like a character straight out of the Marvel universe since he was pure human sounding. Star Wars always had exotic voices/accents/etc. for nonhumanoid creatures/people, especially the more “alien” looking.
*Tone down L3.
*Trim down “Droid Revolt,” it’s fine what they do, but it was starting to get really corny as it dragged on.
*Qi’ra scene with Maul needs to be moved around. The ship should fly away AFTER Han’s converstaion with dying Tobias regarding Qi’ra’s motives … since we the audience already know…

It’s crazy how short a life span this movie had. It’s sort of an ugly step-child of the franchise.

I for one think that it could actually become a really good movie if one was to strip down some of narrative clunk and get rid of that grating pace.

I’m speculating cause of course I haven’t seen the deleted scenes but I feel like the Han Imperial academy scene would help enormously in having the audience get fully onboard with the character before his proper adventure begins. Here’s hoping…

I’d say cut the “solo” name origin, cut some unnecessary L3 lines, and replace Maul with Fett, Jabba or even Vader… somehow.

L3 and other droid scenes need to be trimmed for sure. The whole Droid Rebellion needs some trimming … it got goofy very quickly.

The scene of Han as a TIE pilot in-training is very interesting to me, and I’m sort of on the fence if it should be included in any future edits.

On one hand, we never really see Han being a great “ship” pilot until his first job, so it is kind of weird how much of a great pilot he thinks he is when we’ve only seen him drive landspeeders.

By including that scene, we get a glimpse of how Han began learning to become an actual pilot.

On the other hand, the jump cut of the officer saying “You’ll be flying in no time!” to him panicking in the trenches is fantastic. And I’m sure they considered cutting in the first place for pacing reasons.

Is it just me or is the movie, just, really hard to see? I don’t remember it being this hard to see in the movie theater.

Bringing this up here in case I’m not eye stupid and in case it can be fixed.

It’s the movie. It’s been criticized before for being very darkly lit.

In regards to including the Imperial Cadet scene, I think the scene in the Tie fighter is probably not good since it has unfinished FX.

But the court tribunal scene I think could be a valuable insight into Han’s character and how he doesn’t really fit in a structure, being a rebel by nature. Also I think it can stand alone without the setup since Han essentially explains what the incident was.

Author
Time

Yeah, I noticed the FX weren’t done as well unfortunately.
I also had the same thought, he does explain what happened. I think it is a little unfortunate that he would be telling them what happened rather than us seeing it, you know, show don’t tell. And there are a few shots during the tribunal where can see blue screen in the background too.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but just looking at the film as is, the one thing that stood out to me is the look of the subtitles for non English parts. They should have been done in the same style/font as the original films (and The Force Awakens)

It would be really cool if someone with the know-how could re-create them so we could just remux them into the film.

Author
Time

Watching the extras last night there was a clip from the movie which had subtitles that did match the other films!

Why is is that the PGS subs on the bluray and the 4K bluray are both crappy standard fonts?

I’m wondering if different regions have different style subs…

Hal 9000 said:

lol, what the HELL is Darth Maul doing in a young Han Solo movie? I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I imagine that it is absurd as it sounds.

Basically, no-one in Hollywood knows how to make a movie these days without trying to copy some part of “Marvels Magic Formula”. And yes I know that Disney owns both but, the copyright owners have nothing to do with how that films should be handled. And handling a golden goose like the matured ugly duckling, just won’t cut this Swiss cheese of a movie, into a perfect slice of apple pie.
Still if they do go through with a Maul centered movie in the next few years I hope they can give him some character development.
As for the rest of Solo, I liked it for the most part but some of the jokes were pushed just to far. I need to re-watch it but the Han talking Wookie, while necessary could do with trimming to avoid the awkwardness. I couldn’t look at that think without think of that one seen from Fantastic Beasts, which was not a good memory to be reminded of. Also a few other bits but as I said I need to re-watch it.
