I really hope Tran’s role isn’t downplayed or sidelined in Episode IX. I loved her performance, and enjoyed what her character had to offer.

Great article. Glad to see KMT push back against online trolls in a way that is strong, measured, but also humanizes her by allowing her to open up about her struggle.

I did have one comment about the following quote:

“It reinforced within me rules that were written before I was born, rules that made my parents deem it necessary to abandon their real names and adopt American ones — Tony and Kay — so it was easier for others to pronounce, a literal erasure of culture that still has me aching to the core.”

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with voluntary cultural assimilation (in fact I think it’s desirable to a certain extent) as long as you don’t let it erase your native culture. It is possible to have both.

It obviously sounds like they weren’t happy about but felt like they needed to do it.

Should we be referring to her as KMT? She said her real name was Loan. So maybe LMT or LT would be more appropriate? (assuming Tran is her real last name)

I wonder if she would be offended by my brother and his wife giving their adopted Chinese daughter our last name and an American first name. (I am not sure if they knew her original Chinese name or not)

Seeing as how “Kelly Marie Tran” is at the very least the professional name she chooses to go by–and likely incorporated into her legal name as well–I think it’s completely reasonable to keep referring to her as such.

But it sounds like she doesn’t like that name.

Are you sure? I was hoping she could give me her recipe for chow mein noodles. Mine are getting pretty good but they’re missing something small that I can’t put my finger on to make them restaraunt quality

I was having fun with the idea of KMT being the spokespeople for asians/Asian Americans. Chow mein is one of my personal favorite dishes. In luckydube’s case, possibly. But I have been disappointed by this thread in that it doesn’t let one discuss fan toxicity from any perspective save the one indicated in the OP.

Which is 100% fair on two accounts - firstly, every other thread on this site already has those discussions, and secondly, whatever you think of the new films there is no excuse whatsoever for harassment (which, of course, is what the thread is actually about). Criticizing the films wouldn’t be “invading the safe space” or whatever. It’d simply be irrelevant and off topic.

I agree there is no excuse for harassment. But harassment and legit criticism are two different things and neither are allowed in this thread. Lets face it: In some regard, this is a safe place.

Additionally there have been multiple times I have felt like saying something in reply to something posted here, but have not felt that I would be allowed to do so due to the tone set by the OP. (and I don’t mean acting like an asshat or a racist)

I don’t know what’s so hard to understand. Criticism of the films is off topic in this thread. If that makes this a safe space, then I guess a lot of threads are safe spaces. Is the General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread a safe space because I can’t criticize Donald Trump in there?
