Genesis of the Daleks – omnibus movie version

I’m in on that alone.

You’ll probably like to hear, then, that Mark Ayres is doing 5.1 mixes for Genesis and Ark in Space.

Nice. The same sort of “movie” treatment on Battlefield was great.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

For anyone who was considering pre ordering the S12 set but hasn’t yet, a message from the restoration team:

This is a bit of a heads-up for US fans… There’s now a confirmed release date of 26th of June in the States. It would be incredibly helpful if you could get your pre-orders in (it’s on Amazon already, I imagine it’s also on other retail sites) sooner rather than later. America is a really big linchpin in the future of this Blu-ray range, so strong pre-order sales will help create confidence in the range and encourage early commissioning of the next set. Spread the word!

It’s actually June 19 now. https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Tom-Baker-The-Complete-First-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B079PT1N7W

I also suspect the price on Amazon will drop considerably, based on what Target has listed (still with placeholder date: https://www.target.com/p/doctor-who-tom-baker-complete-first-s-blu-ray/-/A-53487571

I wish I had the money to spend $70 on a Blu-ray set right now.

$53, but fair enough. 😃

Twitch is gonna be streaming Classic Who…most of it. Any stories with missing episodes are skipped, even if they’ve been animated, except Web of Fear, for some reason, which isn’t even animated. And they’re missing tons of Dalek stories too. So many important or enjoyable stories like The Tenth Planet, The Five Doctors, and Remembrance of the Daleks are being skipped. Oh well. At least they have The Gunslingers, which is next on my viewing list (watching the entire series), so I guess I’ll watch that live.

This is almost always the case with their streaming package. Terry Nation’s estate demands enormous amounts of money to include Dalek stories not written by Nation himself. Sadly, this includes The Five Doctors due to the 30 seconds a Dalek is on screen.

They also need to work out deals with the animating companies normally. Invasion tends to be included as it was made much earlier and with a different contract. But this one is strange, as it doesn’t even include Power of the Daleks (made recently, with streaming in mind, and available usually in streaming packages). So presumably they just don’t want to show animation.

Not sure what their plan is for Ice Warriors. It would be very strange to show that low quality animation. Maybe they’re using the old 15 minute condensed recon for episodes 2 and 3, originally made for VHS.

Not crazy about those digipack trays on the UK set. They have a tendency to crack over time.

I wish they’d kept the old logo. Same goes for Big Finish. I mean, I like the new logo, sure, but the old logo is simply a perfection of logo design. Seriously, there’s no way you can top the early 70s/96 logo.

I haven’t had them crack, but the tape on the side can weaken. Certainly the weaker link in otherwise sturdy looking packaging.

I can see the desire for unified branding. And I think it looks quite nice on the new UK Collection packaging. A bit overstated on the old and US versions.

For Big Finish, the good news is ditching the side column style and the big waste of space there.

Gosh, I wish that packaging made it to the US. I don’t have a 50 Hz player. :’-(

Ooh, a Genesis omnibus! Interesting…

It’s getting a theatrical screeniing in a couple weeks, with the new 5.1 mix.

Is the omnibus an all new edit or a remastering? I seem to recall there being one before. My local PBS station would run an entire story in one afternoon when I was a kid.

And thanks for the heads up! Hopefully this won’t be scuttled for a technical snafu like the screening of the animated Power Of The Daleks I attended.

On disc, the omnibus versions are always direct preservations of the broadcast tapes. And yes this is an old edit. But for the theatrical showing they’re in the process of reconforming the edit using the newly restored video and 5.1 mix.

I didn’t make it to a screening, but I heard a number of them did have technical issues.

Anyway, the US set is shipping, now about $49. The UK one got delayed until July 2, apparently due to packaging manufacturing.

It was on one of the Who reddit sites - has been taken down since though.

Seems the BBC were quick and thorough in getting the leaks taken down, though am sure there’s somewhere where it’s still up.

Doctor Who Series 11 Teaser

I don’t get it. I mean, I understand that this is showcasing the new companions, but is the Doctor the Flash now?

I picked up the Season 12(?) set (US). The slipcover seems flimsier than most, which is really saying something given that they’re usually fairly flimsy. I might toss it.

I also added the “omnibus” Genesis to Letterboxd for anyone who cares about that.

I’m very skeptical. I was pretty done with this show by the end of Matt Smith’s tenure, but Capaldi happened to be the closest I feel to a classic Doctor on the new show. Too bad the writing suffered greatly. The show keeps getting younger, and if it’s going to be focusing on a bunch of modern day millennials, I’m going to have a hell of a time trying to enjoy it. I suppose that’s not really a fault of the show so much as I’m no longer the target demographic.
