Pens is an abbreviation for penalties, mate 😃

In the knockout stages of a tournament, if the scoreline is tied after 90 minutes there is an extra-time period of 30 minutes to see if one team can triumph. If the scores are still level, penalties are then used to decide the winner.

Each team gets 5 penalties each - whoever scores the most penalties, wins. Each penalty has to be taken by a different player.

However, on occasion, the ties are still level after the 5 penalties are taken… this then results in a further round of 1 penalty each (sometimes referred to as ‘sudden death penalties’) - to be taken by players who have not yet taken a penalty - and it continues until there is a winner.

Sometimes this results in both goalkeepers taking penalties, occasionally against each other - which is quite a rare event, and usually fun/entertaining to watch.

If the scores are still level after everyone has taken a penalty - it just resets back to the players who originally took the set of 5 penalties - and continues until there is a winner…

This video may show / explain it better (a 15-14 win on penalties for Liverpool a couple of years back)…

If it was up to me, if teams were still tied after the 30 minute extra time period, I would turn off the clock and have them play soccer until someone scores. (Team that scores wins the game)

IMO third place games are silly.

They used to have them in US college basketball. Killed them off because…they were silly.

well, after playing for 120 minutes the players are usually exhausted, and most of them have ran something like 10 miles, so making them play until someone scores sounds brutal, because that could last for several more minutes.

what you described is how extra time used to be though. in brazil we called it ‘sudden death’ - the first team to score in extra time would automatically win. when it was like that, every attack from the adversary was a mini heart attack, so i’m kind of glad that that’s no longer how extra time works.

Congratulations to Belgium - well worth their 2-0 win vs England today (and should have been a wider scoreline).

England really didn’t going until around 70 mins - a bit of pressure and some decent set-pieces - though a way off the movement, quality and awareness of a better Belgium team throughout.

Well in ZigZig 😃

But both sides would be exhausted so it would be fair. Also most players in the World Cup tourney are professional level athletes, pretty they can take it. In baseball, they play inning after inning until there is a winner. In the playoffs, the NBA, NFL, and NHL all play their sport until there is a winner.

At least my way, the game would be decided by playing the sport itself instead of shoot outs.

The problem with a play-till-you-win match, is if it isn’t a final, it could ruin the final. Just look at Wimbledon… after that marathon Mahut-Isner match, Isner could barely play the next match. Now I hope I’m proven wrong, but there is every likelihood that this recent marathon Anderson-Isner semifinal is just as likely to have ruined the final.

The Belgium-England match was great, especially the last 20 minutes. Both sides really did some impressive passing combinations that should have led to scores. One of the more exciting games, in my opinion.

NHL does it a good way IMO.

Regular season games have a 5 minute, sudden-death 3v3 (compared to 5v5 in regulation) overtime period. After that, winner is determined by shootout. Both teams get 1 point when the game goes into OT, and the winner (via the sudden-death period or shootout) gets a second point. (In regulation, winner gets 2 points, loser gets 0.)

But in the playoffs, all games that end in a tie in regulation just keep going, with full 20 minute 5v5 sudden-death periods.

The players are definitely tired at that point - I’ve seen playoff game go into the third OT period, which, if that went the full 20 minutes, would mean the length of the game doubles. It didn’t - someone scored around 5min into 3OT - but every player was absolutely exhausted.

I think something like this could work for soccer, honestly. Player fatigue is kind of part and parcel with OT in any sport, so I don’t really get that argument. I don’t know if the NHL’s “regular season” shortened OT period with fewer players on the field would work for soccer, but I don’t see why sudden-death OT periods in general wouldn’t.

One day’s rest is insufficient recovery time after an 11-hour match. (that was the length of the Mahut-Isner match)

I’d guess about the same odds as for a tennis match.

Having said that, I’ve always thought there should be better ways than penalty kicks. What about reducing the number players on each team by 1 (or 2), at each 10 minutes of overtime play?

I tell the story of memory because it happened almost 40 years ago. This match was to look like a Monty Python sketch, I guess the key word is “amateur”.

Congratulations to France.

Thought Croatia were the better footballing side in the main - and were hard done by - especially by the earlier referee decisions that went against them for France’s first two goals.

Still, France put the ball in the back of the net more times, so…

Fair play to the French lads for doing a Guard Of Honour for the Croatian side…

Respect to the Croatian President - one of the few who didn’t have an umbrella protecting them for that dangerous rain during the handing out of medals etc… (also travels economy class, watches all the games, and prefers to sit with regular match-going fans)
