If I were Frink’s sock I’d probably have a better username.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.
He probably gave up when he realized he’ll never come up with a better username than Mark’s Down on your Syntax.

Tl;dr: Carrie will be back… but by using unused footage from Force Awakens. Luke and Lando confirmed as well.
What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.
They probably will do some CGI compositing to put her into new scenes ala Brandon Lee in The Crow.
Where were you in '77?
They could still do some CGI compositing to put her into new scenes ala Brandon Lee in The Crow.
True! As well as body doubles from behind. In any case I am glad they found a solution rather than just starting episode nine with ‘oh and Leia’s dead’…

Also means there was more unused footage from TFA than they have previously let on about? It can’t simply be alternate takes of what we’ve already seen. If they digitize every line she’s spoken (even from non-SW roles) they might even create new dialog the script requires. I think a soundalike might be too obvious unless they get her daughter to do it.

I’m honestly pretty surprised that they have unused footage that’s usable, but possibly even more surprised that they’re telling us now and not keeping it a secret - same for Mark Hamill’s return (although I suppose everyone was already suspecting that). Good news all around either way (also nice to see Billie get a mention, hopefully her role will be yet again bigger this time).
I’m truly quite curious what Carrie footage they actually have. Thankfully for them they’ve been fairly mysterious about some of the stuff that got cut out of that film so we won’t necessarily just be seeing deleted scenes we’ve already seen (although that’s certainly possible). Beyond the two scenes released on home video, the only other scene we really know about is what was briefly shown in the trailer (Maz handing her the lightsaber). If I had to guess it’ll just turn out to be a really brief appearance.
Curious about who the two new characters are. Good bets if they’re announced now they’re probably not bit players.
Only slight disappointment for me is that Dan Mindel is back as the DP. Not that I didn’t like his work on TFA (quite the opposite), but I thought it’d be cool to have a different look for each film. Though I’m quite glad Rick Carter is back as co-production designer.
They know fans will be spying on the studio once production begins. We live in an era where drones are flown over the outdoor sets. The cat would be out of the bag the moment Mark or Billy Dee are spotted anywhere in England next month anyway.

Yeah, which is why the Carrie news is the bigger surprise to me. They could have kept that under wraps until opening day.
Perhaps they just wanted to get in front of viewers and make clear it’s unreleased footage, not CGI (I guess they only have themselves to blame for any assumptions about the latter).
News of a body double dressed as Leia would no doubt also leak early. It’s a wonder Yoda being in TLJ didn’t leak at all, AFAIK.

Apart from TFA being total garbage, I think Dan Mindel did a piss-poor job as DP in TFA, and even though the movie was shot on film it doesn’t look like it. Steve Yedlin on the other hand did a masterful job with TLJ and it’s a real shame he didn’t stick around for Episode IX. Then again JJ Abrams is back as director and co-writer, so I fully expect Ep. IX to be another botch job.
Such optimism! 😛

Well I obviously disagree on Mindel, though an Abrams/Yedlin combo would’ve been interesting to see.
I totally expected Carrie to be back in one form or another. Personally I think it’s cool, there’s no need to have real life tragedy influence the story out of pure convenience. More worried about the writing quality of the overall plot more than anything else.

Besides the John Williams score (which I didn’t hear before seeing it) I don’t think so.

Hmmm, is this a shitpost or having fun?
But I’m stoked about Lando. Not stoked about the inevitable fanservice bitching.
Lando should have been in this trilogy from the start.

There is a need, and it’s not just convenience. It’s honestly fantastic they’ve found some way to include her, but there’s literally no way they’d be able to do exactly what they wanted with Leia without Carrie alive (beyond recasting, which would have made a lot of people angry).

Nah
I look forward to the tender reunion scene with Nien Nubb. Nubb did survive TLJ, right?
Where were you in '77?
Yeah I think he’s on the Falcon in the group shot.
Hopefully IX will see Lando and Chewie have some screentime together, and in Chewy’s case… a bit more than he did for TLJ.
Am glad that they’ll be having Leia in as part of the story too.
A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I’ve made my dislike of TFA clear on several occasions, plus I’ve yet to see a JJ Abrams movie that I like. All of movies feel insipid to me.
As much as I love TLJ I am not looking forward to Ep. IX due to Abrams returning. I would’ve been more hopeful if Chris Terrio was the sole writer, but Abrams is a co-writer which further lowers my expectations.
I will only go see Ep. IX on cinemas to see how the story ends, which will no doubt be a botch job. This is JJ Abrams we’re talking about, after all.

I wonder if they also didn’t think allowing constant speculation would be distasteful and disrespectful to Carrie’s survivors.

I think it leaked at Celebration 2016 where they were exhibiting the official Yoda puppets and one of the puppeteers said ‘That’s the Episode 8 Yoda’.
At least, I heard about it in 2016.
