They have a brand to maintain, it can’t be watered down with talk of multiple visions.

Considering they’ve managed to destroy their PR of the brand in 2 and a half years a Director’s Cut would probably be the least damaging thing they’ve done in a while.

That being said we’ll get a Jar Jar Binks spin off before that happens.

Also the film has barely crossed 300 million worldwide, am I still being premature in calling it a box office flop or?..

No. It bombed. They’ll be fortunate to break even with home releases.

Without knowing the actual budget, (which Disney is never going to divulge) how will we ever know for sure?

Even Willow finally turned a profit many years later. IIRC, George sent a note to Ron Howard about it.

Right so I am very late and only now just saw Solo despite having seen all the previous Disney-made productions on opening night.

Overall, I found it very milquetoast and just…average. It wasn’t terrible by any stretch, but it felt like Thor 2: generic and by the numbers.

Maybe repeat viewings will change my view but I give it a 6/10.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

It was ok, I enjoyed parts of it. I don’t like prequels that try to explain away every little aspect we know of an iconic character all within 1 adventure, it makes them less interesting. The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean made the same mistake. And it’s more proof I’m getting tired of constant callbacks to the original trilogy, I’m ready for the franchise to go off in a totally different direction.

For my ally is the Force and a powerful ally, it is.

I have seen Solo twice now and very much enjoyed the nods to the early novels and comics , I like that they were there to add flavor and character to the movie and did not call a lot of attention to themselves , a few of them ,I missed on the first viewing , such as the Dancing Goddess statue in Dryden’s office from the original Marvel comics .And from the beginning , I figured Qi’ra would betray Han in some way as her character reminded me a lot of Bria Tharen from the A.C. Crispin Han Solo novels , though her betrayal there was to use him to help the cause of the rebellion.

My biggest praise for this film, no planet title cards. After Rogue One and the Battlefront 2 (I know it’s a game but it follow the R.O Structure of planet title cards in the cutscenes.) campaign having titlecards, I had a bad feeling that this is how Lucasfilm were gonna handle these spin off stories. It seemed like Ron Howard knew the audience were smart enough to keep up with it. Unlike Gareth Edwards decision and not thinking we would keepup knowing where their going. “Setting Course of Edu”, still got the title card. “I know there’s a complete engineering archive in the data vault in the Citadel Tower on Scarif.” Scarif is mention many other times after that. Still we got a title card. I’m surprise we didn’t get a title card for the Death Star and Mustafar. With that aside. My only gripe was the alien yellow subtitles, I mean really ? Why start with yellow color subtitles when they’ve been white ? Overall I thought Solo was just an average fun space flick. Nothing to special but enjoyable fun. My favorite part is when they’re escaping the Empire and the greatest hits from the original trilogy involving the Falcon played in the background. 3 limbs ripped by a wookie out of 5.

All my life as I looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never in my mind did I know where I was, what I was doing.

Sluggo liked it. It was a fun romp. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around someone else than Ford playing Solo, but I liked it over all.

Disclaimer: I totally love Star Wars but I don’t take it too seriously. And I don’t really give a rip about canon, I have my own “official” version in my imagination.

TVs Frink doesn’t even want to know what Possessed thinks about Sluggo.

I too liked it though. It wasn’t perfect, but it was fun. The characters were all good. The plot was iffy, but ah well.

Can I “like” this post? And Frink’s post as well? Is there some C++ I can type in to make that work? Or some javas?

I only saw Solo once in theater, and when I left, I yawned 2 or 3 times. Why? The ending just sucked… the pirates and that awful scene with Darth Maul. But the movie suffered right from the beginning. In my opinion when it comes to story telling you don’t need to show anything that has no real relevance to the story… the audience can be informed by dialogue (like in ANH when Ben explains the force and about Anakin to Luke). So I was perplexed why they showed Han and his partner escaping Corellia - for her to get left behind. Then later on they abandon the story of Han finding her. To me the movie should’ve started when they were robbing the train.
After that things got better. The middle section of the movie was enjoyable. To me Chewbacca and Lando saved Solo, from being bad, to being okay. Not a re-watchable movie, at least not for me. All the action was necessary to try and distract from the fact, there was barely any story.
The droid was annoying, the main bad guy was dull. I would put this on a par with the Phantom Menace and just below Rogue One. That just like those movies, they could’ve been made better. Considering its big budget, there was no excuse for it being middle of the road. 6/10

A long time friend of mine runs a pop culture site: Pop Culture Rewind. His podcast this month is his review of Solo. http://popculturerewind.com/e/pcr-92-so-so-for-solo/

He gave us a shoutout and has been a bit of a lurker on here. Several years of pop culture thoughts and casts to go through on his site if you have the time or inclination.

His Solo review is on par with the thoughts around here.

so, this is like the prequels, but for Han Solo and not Anakin Skywalker.

Also it’s a good movie.

I’d say it’s the other way around. The Prequels are very memorable, whereas Solo is the most bland forgettable SW film I’ve ever seen.

If the prequels are memorable, it’s not for the right reasons.

Wanted to see a Solo film but was not interested in the origin story. Was hoping for a series of action sci fi films of his non-connected exploits. Like the Indiana Jones Trilogy.

I really do not need to understand the source of his tragedy/loneliness. I dont want the further romanticization of his character. That was already handled in the OT.

Just Solo + Chewie + Falcon and occasional Lando put into various situations. Add some comedy and witty dialog and you got success. No depth required. No need to interconnect.

It’s amazing how we humans quickly forget. The prequels were ravaged much more severely than TLJ has been to date. The cries of ruined childhoods resounded. IMO the prequels were awful movie making with a serviceable plot and interesting revelations. Looking at what Lucas wanted to do with ep 7-9 would have been horrible x 10.
