Disney to buy 20th (21st) Century Fox? (Disney has now bought them - 14 Dec '17) — Page 16

Guess we’ll see how badly Disney wants a 41 year old movie and the X-Men/FF rights now. Although I suppose they might cut a deal with Comcast if that’s all they really want? They did play nice with Universal to get Walt’s pre-Mickey creation Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

The rights to Star Wars (77) aren’t worth all that much, honestly, considering they already have what matters most. Even the other Marvel stuff probably isn’t worth more than a couple billion at most (very rough guess). The main goal I believe in terms of back catalog is for more content on their streaming service.

But of course it’s not just buying their back catalog, what’d probably happen would be that Fox would keep chugging along more or less like before, just as a Disney subsidiary (along with the other Fox subsidiaries in the deal, depending on what Disney wants to do with them). Same thing with Comcast.

Not sure I like the idea of Disney owning The Simpsons though. And Universal already has them in the theme parks.

I don’t think TV is part of the deal, so they wouldn’t get The Simpsons. I don’t like the idea of them getting X-Men, though. Fox did things with that franchise that Disney never would.

Yeah, 21st C. is doing this to focus on its news, sports and network TV divisions.

Not sure about cable entertainment networks though, e.g. FX and FXX.

Wonder if Disney would consider a name change so as not to give Fox’s other properties free advertising. Maybe a return to 20th Century Pictures… Would still have instant name recognition, and the classic logo could be retained.

“If you were hoping to see all of your favourite Marvel characters under one roof, we have some bad news. If you didn’t like the idea of Disney owning the whole Marvel universe, well, it can always get worse. Comcast is backing a dump truck of cash up to 21st Century Fox’s doorstep, besting Disney’s previous offer to buy the company. And the merger floodgates are officially open.”

I love the reporting 😃

I would love it if Comcast actually drove a dump truck full of money over to Fox. 😛

Disney would get any and all IP owned by Fox, so they would get The Simpsons.

The Murdochs would hold on to the Fox network itself since Disney owning more than one of the “big four” (they already own ABC) would violate antitrust regulations.

Why doesn’t anti-trust apply to major film studios as well? Is six considered more than enough?

NBC, ABC, and CBS are different… for reasons. There’s historically been more government regulation for TV/radio than film.

Movie studios used to own theater chains across the country. That ended in the 1950’s because of anti-trust laws.

So, did anyone see the AT&T and Time Warner merger went through?

Warner owns DC Comics, so I look forward to the resurgence in phone booths for Superman to change in.
