Moon - an appreciation thread : (2009 film by Duncan Jones) (NEWS)

The premise (from imdb)…

Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet’s power problems.

I love this film, ever since I first saw this film (not knowing anything about it) I have been addict to it.
Sam Rockwell gives a top-notch performance, I feel like he is a real Astronaut and GERTY is one of my favourite AI computers ever, because it constantly shows its mood through a series of different smiley faces, and has Kevin Spacey’s voice.

This film pays respect to many older science fiction movies like Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Silent Running, and it is a great homage. The other great thing about this movie is the special effects. Since the budget was so low this could have been a disaster, but the shots of the Moon Rovers and Harvesters were astonishingly realistic, And it touches on issues such as scientific ethics, corporate greed, human identity, and compassion.

And Clint Mansell’s score. Oh my the score, Its atmospheric and cold, isolated and a has a bit of mystery, I love it 😃

I never finished it, and I still have no idea why.

Not enough people read the EU.

Agreed, Paja - this is a top film. It has a great atmosphere throughout and some fantastic visuals despite the low budget. I would advise anyone who plans to watch it at some point not to watch any trailers beforehand, since they contain far too many spoilers.

(Rather conveniently, the trailer link above seems to be broken!)

Definitely one of my favorites, though I must say you seem to have a borderline unhealthy obsession with the movie, paja! 😉

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo…

It was better broken. It’s a bit like having a trailer for ESB which gives away the Vader/Luke plot twist.

I’ll change the link to something else. 😛

I doubt that it will be an upscale, also

It’s a 2K DI. Common practice would be to upscale. They’d have to reassemble the camera negative and scan at 4K to go native. Plus the effects are all 2K anyway. The drab (not a criticism) color palette probably won’t get that much of a boost from HDR.

Was it even shot on film for there to be a negative to go back to?

With all the compositing and VFX, which are all done at 2K, even if the original footage is greater than 2K resolution there’s no way they’re doing anything but an upscale for the UHD release.

According to IMDB, it was shot on 35mm and finished at a 2K DI.

I assume that means there is no “original negative” in the classic sense, since the DI serves the role of the assembled o-neg. Rather just rolls of disjointed camera negative in a box.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

Nah, that’s probably pretty accurate. Surprised it was shot in film though, with a movie like that would probably have been easier to work with digital from the start.
