Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series for Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform. Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars galaxy having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau is thrilled to be returning to the Star Wars galaxy: “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Disney’s collaborations with Favreau extend back a decade, when he helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe as director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 and as an executive producer of the Iron Man and Avengers films for Marvel Studios. For Disney, he directed and produced the massively successful The Jungle Book, which won an Academy Award for its groundbreaking visual effects. He is currently in production on Disney’s highly anticipated reimagining of The Lion King, set for release in 2019.

The untitled Star Wars live-action series does not yet have a release date.

Interesting. I’m looking forward to this, more so than to Rian’s trilogy and the GoT’s producers’ film series.

Intriguing news - hope it goes well.

The amazing director of Iron Man & Iron Man 2 !!!

Oh…

wait…

ok… I won’t say more (moderator edit: to remove false claims, mistruths and further erroneous edits by MalaStrana - and not posts like ‘to avoid any confusion’ nor ‘…to be banned for “negativity”’)… this guy’s CV pretty much sums up what I think of this project and the interest I have about it.

If they want to hire a Marvel guy, Joe Johnston would still be perfect for the job. Just saying…

Don’t be ridiculous, unless I’ve missed something you’ve never been banned despite your constant “negativity” (unnecessary quotes aside).

I don’t even like superhero movies and I thought Iron Man was excellent until the end.

And he’s a hell of a fake MMA fighter.

Anyway, I’d like to see something run by the other Jon Favreau instead. It would make your head explode.

Nah, it’s not like there was much room for more political correctness in the Star Wars Disney era anyway 😃

Iron Man, Swingers, and Chef are great. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with. I’m sure he will have his pick when it comes to casting.

Interesting that he hasn’t really done much TV, but either way he is talented.

Don’t forget “Jungle Book.” Agree completely with Collipso.

Not on the writing end of things, but he’s dabbled in tv a bit over the last few years.

He directed the pilot episodes of Revolution, The Orville and Young Sheldon and executive produced The Shannara Chronicles.

“You’re hung up on some clown from the 60s, man”.
My favorite of his work.

I’m a big fan of his, as a person and an artist. Love the Young Sheldon series. Looking forward to his take on the GFFA for sure. By the way, he’s listed fairly high up in the cast for Solo, but no character name.

I’m aware he has TV credits, as far as a I know though he’s never been a showrunner, which is presumably what he’s doing here.

Meh. I don’t love or hate Favreau. I like the idea of a live action series in general, but I’m going to need some more specifics before I get excited. I will say, and I’m not blaming any of these directors themselves, that I’m more than a little dismayed by the way that Disney’s ostensible commitment to diversity doesn’t seem to extend beyond actors. By my count, Favreau is the twelfth white male to head one of these projects since the Disney buyout (fourteenth if you count JJ and Rian twice). Someone over there has to understand how this looks.

Yeah, it’s looking not great. Admittedly, it looks better when you note that only 4 have actually completed their films, and when you realize that in terms of directors, there’s only two future ones on the docket and they’re both returning players. The silver lining is that Favreau and Weiss/Benioff are only writer/producers, which means that even those projects (and Rian’s other films) still have the chance to hire more diverse creatives. Let’s hope they do.

As for the show itself, it’s about time this happened, considering all those years Lucas hyped up live action SW TV. As you said, it’s hard to get too excited though, not knowing what it’s about. What a strange time we live in where there a three new Star Wars series in the pipeline, two film series and one TV series, and we know nothing about their subject matter beyond “a galaxy far, far away.” Rian’s is almost certainly the one I’m most interested in as a much prefer film to TV, and he’s easily the most talented of those four (and he’s already proven he can handle SW very well).

Honestly surprised that they didn’t go the easy route with between EP III and IV.

I’m happy with it. We need more stuff between ROTJ and TFA.

I’m definitely happy too. I want to see the early days of the Resistance and maybe some Snoke stuff.

I’ve seen other reports saying it is set 7 years before RotJ and another saying it’s set 7 years after the battle of Yavin.

The interview with Jon Favreau, of which many of the reports are likely based on, can be found here mate:-

^ Jon Favreau starts talking about it 1 minute into the video.

(Favreau says it takes place around 7 years after the Battle Of Yavin)

RotJ is 4 years ABY, so why not just say it’s 3 years after RotJ?

He probably meant to say it’s 7 years after the battle of Endor.

If 48 people came to Disney with pitches, and 12 were white men, 12 white women, 12 black men, and 12 black women, I hope Disney picks the 12 best pitches. True equality will be when no one even remotely considers physical appearance but rather how good they are for the job.

That being said, should the 12 best all happen to be the white men Disney shouldn’t be criticized. And considering white men make up the majority of the film industry (which hopefully will change), a more appropriate representation would be 35 white men, 6 white women, 6 black men, and 3 black women. In which case the probability of all best pitches being white men is much higher.
