The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS ** — Page 258

I guess I would put it this way in regards to comparing Rey and Luke in their respective middle entries of their trilogies.

With Luke, we saw his psychological struggle with things like his trial in the cave and when he figures out that Vader is his father. But you also get his physical struggles with the actual force like Dre said. Luke fails consistently throughout the movie in regards to force related feats.

With Rey in the Last Jedi, I think there is a very good psychological struggle that we see with her. She grapples with finding her place in the galaxy, seeing legends as real fallible humans, and defining her own path. She experiences a lot of emotional pain when she has to part ways with Kylo.

But she obviously lacks any of the physical/force challenges that Luke had. She does breeze through everything force related.

So when people say that Rey in TLJ underwent no trials, then I would object. But I do admit that she didn’t get quite the sphere of challenges as Luke did in the Empire Strikes Back.

so I decided to read some books that I had not read in a long time the other day, and I came across a book series that I used to love a couple of years ago. The book series is 12 books long I think, and while there’s usually a small time gap in between books 1-11, there’s a 20 or 30 year jump from 11 to 12.

the final page of the final chapter of book 11 is the protagonist getting married to the love of his life after winning th war. you grow to love the protagonist throughout the 11 books, so it’s really rewarding when he basically wins after so much struggle and so many losses.

jump to the first page of the first chapter of book 12. 20 years have passed, and the first thing we’re told is that the protagonist, will, is now old, insane and depressed, because his wife was killed. in this book, he’s no longer the protagonist, we have a new younger female protagonist that seeks him for guidance and to try and make him see that he’s wrong. it does sound a lot like tfa/tlj, huh? it surprises me i hadn’t noticed the similarities before.

anyway, the problem for me is that i still see myself as the older protagonist, in this case Will, or for the ST, Luke. he’s the one i’m attached to the most and care about the most and have related until that point to the most. so it doesn’t feel good to read or watch that you (or the guy you wanted to be, or the guy you used to see yourslef as, etc.) are basically depressed, wrong, and insane.

maybe you enjoy that sort of story. good for you. i don’t. and that’s why i don’t like Luke here.

i never finished book 12, by the way - i stopped halfway through, because it was being really painful and sad to see one of my all time favorite characters in such a sad condition.

ps: i do enjoy TLJ Luke because of hamill though - he actually sells it for me. superb performance.

One thing i noticed during my third viewing: Lukes former lightsaber ignites faster with a different sound since he threw it away. Check various scences: Reys training at the rock, Rey VS Luke, Kylo ignites the saber to kill Snoke and the last Praetorian Guard.

Maybe the one Porg accidently changed the lightsabers configuration with his feet right before Rey picks it up?

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.
The hallmark of a corrupt leader: Being surrounded by yes men.

If you think about it, Obi-Wan and Yoda also gave themselves over to the Force in a similar fashion, especially since Obi-Wan disappeared an the moment before Vader’s saber hit him.

Did he? I always thought Vader killed him.

yeah he did. vader’s blade never even touches him.

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

Emphasis mine.

They told me they’d fixed it!

I noticed in TFA that it sounds very different to how it did in ANH. I especially noticed this when Finn first ignited it.

Yeah, Vader kills him. But he gives himself up to the force by allowing Vader to kill him. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

His robe being “empty” before Vader strikes him is definitely a limitation of the special effects of the time.

I watched The Last Jedi again, a full viewing.

All I’ll say is that I think my opinion has changed a lot. I kind of just felt empty by the end after mulling some things over in my head and absorbing it all with a fresh mind. I’m not sure how much lower my opinion of the movie is but I definitely am a lot more confused about how I feel.

I just need to go see Solo already LOL.

Classic. I really liked IW but I don’t think it’d hold up super well to intense story scrutiny, especially in comparison to a much better film.

i do believe that Episode IX has a much higher chance of sucking than the next Avengers though.

Ha, well I guess we can continue to disagree.

Enh, not that unfortunate. 😉

No disrespect to anyone who’s a TFA/TLJ fan, but I am more and more solidly in the “Disney has screwed up this franchise” camp.

One of my biggest disappointments is not seeing the Big Three on screen together one last time. There were just SO MANY better ways the writing could have gone for both these films.

😧 It’s refreshing nowadays to see a movie I don’t feel compelled to reedit.

You couldn’t pay me enough to watch that trash.

I’m curious, Dom: what would your response be if I said the very same thing about TLJ before having seen it? Would you consider that a reasonable stance, or unreasonable?

Yeah, but cinemasins is trash. I tried watching their Stargate video, and wowsers, was it blatantly apparent they hadn’t paid attention to the movie at all.

Cinemasins is not only trash on their own, but spawned armies of pretentious twats who are obsessed with “plot holes” as if movies are nothing more than plot delivery devices.

This movie is a work of art which was difficult for me to swallow. I’ve come around to it, and now enjoy it quite a bit. Just wanted to let you know that my fan edit, released today, contains a commentary track. If anyone wants to watch the movie while I drone on, you’re welcome.

To sum it up in one sentence: “Luke continues to teach me things.”

My stance on revising fan edits.

I really like this movie, and reading some threads over on that Reddit make me feel really uneasy.

Threads such as “Does Rey have any friends?”, “The cinematography in TLJ is overrated”, and the great “All 50+ times Mark Hamill tried to subtly warn us about last jedi/force awakens and bashed Disney”
