Trying not to get too optimistic about Korea. On one hand, this would be great for all parties concerned and the world. On the other hand, we had basically the exact same fanfares and promises in 2000 which turned out to just be cover for a half-billion dollar bribe. Hope is appealing, but cynicism is maintaining a slight lead in my head right now.

Would be nice if we got those Americans still being held freed. Getting the remains of American soldiers still MIA since the Korean War would be great too.

I doubt they would return the USS Pueblo though.

Yeah, let us not forget Kim Jong Un is the guy who has had multiple people assassinated (that we know about).

And he’s really ugly too.

BBC: Amber Rudd resigns as home secretary

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43944988

I was not expecting that. I thought the PM would have kept her on at all costs to use as human shield over the Windrush scandal. Then again, giving misleading official answers is about the worst crime a minister can commit.

Same here - I thought May would keep her to deflects blame away from herself, though as Barry Gardiner points out here…

‘If Amber Rudd has gone because of a memo to @theresa_may telling her about higher targets for enforced removals, then surely the Prime Minister also knew and should not have allowed parliament to be misled all last week.’ - https://twitter.com/BarryGardiner

maybe it won’t be too long before she’ll have to answer questions herself?

Rudd’s replacement, Sajid Javid, doesn’t exactly inspire confidence either (from when he was Communities Minister):-

Had the misfortune to meet the man in person - an underwhelming man, and not a very good MP - even for his local constituents, let alone being in the Cabinet. Still hadn’t managed to re-home the survivors of Grenfell nearly a year on despite his promises and PR rhetoric - amongst other failures - and gets a promotion to Home Secretary for it (maybe May is keeping her enemies close?)

Not forgetting this from two years ago:

http://www.itv.com/news/2016-03-31/calls-for-business-secretary-to-quit-over-handling-of-steel-crisis/

My first thought was “Sajid Javid running the Home Office? We’re all gonna die!!!”.

I’d forgot about the steel fiasco and him leaving the country during it (and likely more involving him too) - though do remember his problems explaining quantitative easing - and also when his figures didn’t add up whilst Secretary to The Treasury too. Doh!

Something about praising Israel too - yet still issuing licenses for weapons exports to Saudi Arabia whilst under a Judicial Review.

Tick tock for the new new Home Secretary…

I heard Russia launched a nuclear plant built on a big boat. Uhhhhhh…

That’s what I heard. Though apparently there have been others launched in 2008/09? This one called Akademik Lomonosov. Seems like a really bad idea to me, but I’m not a scientist.

Maybe an atomic powered vessel? There are a lot of those.

No, it’s a real floating power station. For the Siberian far north, where land-based nuclear power plants would be subject to serious permafrost subsidence or huge methane explosions, and any sort of transport or transmission would be both pricey and unreliable. Not that this is a good idea, but the best idea is clearly don’t put a city there.

Wow, sounds like the plot for a new Godzilla movie. The Russians have a great track record with nuclear power, so there’s probably nothing to worry about. 😉

Yeah, that’s just it. Taking a well-designed, modern nuclear carrier and parking it offshore to power a remote town doesn’t actually sound like a half-bad idea, at least as some sort of stopgap. But this thing? They just launched it and it looks like a Soviet-era museum piece.

I hate to judge a book by its cover, but come on.

So, Pravda on the Checkout Line is pushing the story that Flynn was a Russian spy. While traditionally, nothing resembling the truth can ever come out of that place, for the past several months, people have had some success applying the principles of Kremlinology to the tabloid. i.e. you don’t ever learn the truth per se, but you learn who’s in, who’s out (as in out of favor, not necessarily out of a job), and who’s going to fall off a roof next week.

Now all the cool kids are doing Trump admin Kremlinology using the National Enquirer.

At least put some new paint on it.

It looks like it’s already had a major nuclear accident.

Cops in DC and New York are exploiting tragedy in order to make it easier for them to get away with murdering people. Cops typically shoot people whenever they want anyway so this could be dangerous.

It’s a great idea for people to be cracking off dozens of rounds in public at a moving target with a ton of background. This can only be a good thing.

Secretly taped audio reveals Democratic leadership pressuring progressive to leave race

Caveat #1: Did not read the piece.
Caveat #2: I get the outrage at this sort of thing.

With those things said, isn’t the party supposed to win as many races as possible, and aren’t they meant to push the candidates they think have the best chance to win (right or wrong)? Maybe this stuff isn’t “fair” but it seems totally expected to me.

Two Democrats running for a particular House seat. Minority whip has a meeting with one of them and tells him to drop out because the campaign committee has long since backed the other guy. Says it always is and has been done this way. Candidate in the meeting recorded it on his phone and released it to the press.

Article points out the Democratic campaign committee doesn’t have a good track record for picking winning candidates.

I tend to agree. I would prefer it was fair, and it does infuriate me as well, but I can kind of see where the party is coming from.
