Most Baffling Complaint of a Star Wars Movie — Page 3

I don’t understand the complaint that Rogue One is a story that shouldn’t have been told or didn’t need to be told. I think there’s good potential for a prequel to Star Wars where the whole point is to get rid of the Death Star plans rather than track them down.

When Luke is dragging Vader towards a shuttle in the Death Star’s docking bay, there’s people scrambling in the background, yet no one stops to question why the Emperor’s menacing 2IC is being undressed by a blonde kid - everyone knew the station was doomed. I’m pretty sure the workers would have been the first to drop their tools and GTFO at the first sign of trouble.

The DS2 was finished, the incomplete look was part of the trap. Pretty sure all the contractors were packing up or gone by the time the Emperor arrived. Those were Imperial officers running around in a panic. No time to consider or gawk at Vader. To quote Douglas Adams, it was Somebody Else’s Problem or SEP. 😉
Or maybe Luke used the Force to conceal them both?

I love that all the imperials are running for their life. After all, they’re just people doing their jobs. It’s not like they’re a bunch of clones or anything. 😉

Then what was the “apparent lack of progress” Vader was on about in the opening scene? If any significant amount of progress was made between then and when the emperor arrived it wasn’t even hinted at unless you count that guy saying he would try.

DS2 wasn’t finished, but fully operational. The trap was the Rebels didn’t know DS2’s laser canon was functional.

The Emperor has already leaked the plans to Manny Bothans, so Jerjerrod and his men needed to finish the construction and test of the superlaser before the Rebels arrive. It may be Vader was also annoyed that the Death Star wasn’t in a better condition and its defenses closer to completion, in case the trap goes badly.

How many unfinished but fully operational military vessels do you see out on the ocean?

It wasn’t really out in the ocean, it was still in dry-dock, as it were. It never moved, except perhaps to rotate a bit to point the superlaser. It couldn’t, without losing its shield.

Vader promises the Emperor that it will be completed on schedule, just as Jerjerrod promises he’ll double their efforts after complaining he doesn’t have enough men to do it in the given time. The surprise is that it’s operational - they got the cannon online before finishing the armour and probably the hyperdrive. Hence without an externally generated shield a few ships could just fly into the incomplete superstructure and knock out anything that looks vulnerable.

They told me they’d fixed it!

Rey being a nobody in TLJ contradicts TFA, etc.

I don’t understand this.

  • That TPM created a plot hole by having Yoda know about the Rule of Two. When and how the Rule of Two came to be isn’t mentioned in TPM, so as far as TPM goes, the Sith could have openly existed with the Rule of Two for a million years before their “extinction”.

  • Sound in space. Why should Star Wars be beholden to the physics of real life?

I think most those complaints came after the EU established Darth Bane. It was an invalid complaint when the film first came out and it’s an invalid complaint now with Legends being non-canon.

I guess that the complaint that baffles me the most is saying how a new movie ruins the old ones. Each new movie is a new story. The only time that I’ve found it to impact the OT is in the redemption scene in ROTJ and it only made it more powerful for me. But I still get the same feeling from the OT now that I did when there wasn’t even and EU to carry on the story.

I agree, I think new movies can only add, not detract. If a new movie has something I don’t like, it’s easy to ignore when watching the old one.

The most baffling complaint I’ve seen lately is that there’s no room for any “big” stories between ROTJ and TFA because we’ve been told that those years were a time of relative peace. That makes no sense to me. There’s plenty of stories that can be told in that time period - just because there wasn’t a large scale galactic conflict doesn’t mean nothing happened.

I liked his character but this is the most understandable complaint I have heard of against the Last Jedi. I completely see where people are coming from cause it was a bold and risky decision.

Just to be clear, I make a distinction between thinking he’s out of character, and not agreeing with the direction his character was taken. I agree that it was really bold to do what they did, and I understand that some people just wanted to see something different. I very much disagree with the notion that he is “out of character,” though.

“TPM
That Darth is a title, not a name. I mean, why the hell not? First of all, it’s a solid portmanteau (“Dark Lord of the Sith”). Second of all, maybe this is just me, but I think Darth is kind of a funny name, but works fine as a title. Also, despite what people say, there is nothing in the OT that would suggest this shouldn’t be the case.”

I have always considered that “Lord” is the title, hence “Lord Vader”. To me it seems “Darth” is used in the tradition of the Asian way of naming - placing the family name/surname first, followed by the christian name after it.
The best example I can give is with Jackie Chan who was born “Chan Kong-sang” and his father “Chan Chi-Peng”. When Jackie Chan trained in martial arts, under master Yu Jim-yuen, he became known as “Yuen Lung Chen”.

Vader being Luke’s father turns it into a soap opera. Star Wars was mythic from the start and this seems to fit that pretty well, amongst other things. This is not a hard one to defend.
