Disney Television Animation News reported tonight an update on the deal from Bob Iger himself:

"Disney CEO Bob Iger Provides Update On Fox Acquisition

Disney and 21st Century Fox made waves last year with their landmark deal, and now Disney’s CEO has given fans an update.

Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke to investors on the Quarter 1 earnings call, where he addressed the acquisition of 20th Century Fox (among other properties), how the deal is progressing, and what the next steps are.“Thanks, Low, and good afternoon, everyone,” Iger said. “Before we discuss the quarter and other developments across the company, a quick update about our recently announced acquisition. The regulatory process has begun in numerous jurisdictions across the world. And I spent the last several weeks meeting with a number of business leaders at Fox, gaining insight that will be invaluable when it comes to integrating our organizations once we have regulatory approval."Those regulatory processes that Iger is referring to could allow other companies to place a bid on the assets from 21st Century Fox, with the most recent rumor indicated Comcast might want to get into the mix. After that hurdle is cleared, Iger is excited not only about the new content but the teams and talent that are coming with those projects and IP.“After these discussions, I’m even more enthusiastic about the businesses we’re acquiring and the management teams that are leading them. As we said, when we announced this deal, there are three primary strategic priorities fulfilled by this acquisition. It will deliver more content and the production capabilities and talent to produce even more. It will enhance our direct-to-consumer initiatives with platforms, technologies, brands and existing customer relationships to build on. And it will greatly diversify our businesses geographically. All three of these elements sync up perfectly with our own core strategies, and all three are designed to create growth in a very dynamic global marketplace.””

Can Disney just buy Star Wars? That would be good.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

How’s the deal coming along just curious I know it’s a bad thing but it’s better than Comcast getting them.

Meanwhile…

Our likely best hope of a professionally done restoration for a 4K theatrical version of the Original Trilogy probably lies here - with poita’s superb The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints ongoing project.

Solely as a member here, I’d recommend anyone & everyone to have a look through the above thread, to contribute to help bring about something that many of us here, if not near-on all of us on this site, want to see come to fruition.

What happened to 4K77?

I think they’re still doing their thing mate? - though so far only for Star Wars ('77)?

Not final, it has issues that go back to the master file. And it’s not “out” to the public, just internally at the 4K77 forum, so those kind folks can spot problems like these before general release.

Plan is for all main versions to be released to the public simultaneously, but it won’t be long now (I’d be surprised if that didn’t happen this month).

And it’s not just SW77 - they just want to wrap up work on that one before moving on.

Though I should also point out that 4K77 and its related projects could not have happened as they have without Poita’s help and resources.

Since this thread is about Fox being bought by Disney I think on a related note I’d like to ask: Why hasn’t Time Warner bought Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer? It would make perfect sense since Warner owns MGM’s pre-1984 movie library save for the ones produced by United Artists through Turner. It would mean having all MGM movies under one roof, plus recently the only thing that’s keeping MGM afloat is the James Bond franchise. Warner would also be acquiring Orion Pictures movie library which is currently owned by MGM.

You say why it would make sense for us, the consumer. But why would it make sense for Time Warner, as a business decision?

Apart from James Bond, other movies that would come under Warner’s control are:
The Silence of the Lambs
The Terminator
Robocop franchise
Rocky franchise

Maybe that’s not enough and buying MGM is still not a very smart business move considering the company is said by many to be a mess.

I imagine the price would have to be pretty cheap to justify a purchase of a practically defunct movie studio just for the rights to catalog titles and one every-three-years franchise. Disney is getting much more than that in their acquisition of 20th Century FOX.

Honeslty, I think Warner should. Makes sense.

The possibility of getting the OOT is very, very tempting though. Not to mention FF & X-Men back at Marvel. But I do see your point.

Comcast ain’t any better.

I cannot articulate my anger at Comcast right now just for not letting me log into STARZ, let along the other things they do.

I doubt that the OOT is any more likely to come out after the Fox deal than it ever was, and FF (not even sure what that is) and X-Men is a complete nonissue that does not justify Disney monopolizing the film industry.
