There is of course a great project on here to restore The Original Trilogy from 35mm prints…

Donations welcome…

About the only thing that genuinely frustrates me that my company could restore all three films for around $100K all up cost, to 4K and do it right. It would be chump-change for Disney.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

If only Star Wars were treated with so much care…

2001: A Space Odyssey to have limited 70mm run for 50th anniversary

For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits.

It’s almost as if they’re taunting us. It’s a sad world in which clarifications like this even need to be said.

More like they’re taunting George. 😉

That too. Especially “revisionist edits.” I bet 90+% of the time that phrase is used to describe film, it’s people talking about the original Star Wars Trilogy.

Any word on where 70mm screenings will be held? *crosses fingers for Chicago*

I hope there’s a screening in L.A. I could attend. Would be nice to experience what those people who “freaked out” in theaters back in 1968 did, minus the LSD. 😛

Is there a cut (fanedit maybe) of 2001 that uses Alex North rejected score ?

I’ve never heard of one, but that would be a neat experiment.

If you’re so repulsed by humanity that going to a theater to see a timeless work of art in the highest quality possible and best most cinematic experience because there might be other humans there then yeah sure.

I will say 2001 in particular seems like it’d be cool to see in a giant theater all by yourself.

Otherwise I agree with Possessed.

I got to see rogue one in a theater with just me and dad. It was pretty sweet. (Sunday night showing mixed with a snow storm)

I’ve never had the pleasure (which is odd considering how often I go to the movies). The closest I got was when I saw TLJ for the fourth time a month after it came out on a Tuesday morning. There were still like 7 or 8 other people in there, but it was at the Chinese Theater which has a capacity of almost a thousand, and I was sitting quite a few rows in front anyone else, so it just about seemed like I was the only one there.

I have seen movies by myself on a few occasions, (most recently with Thor Ragnarok) and I can confirm it’s pretty sweet. For me mostly because I don’t feel a need to be quiet with my popcorn and whatever if I’m the only one there.

I decided to add a signature

Or if you just want to sit in the comfort of your own home and save money.

Only recently 😛

I’ve had at least four or five theaters to myself before. If I go to the movies it’s typically after something has been out for a long time and on a day or time when no one is there, like a Wednesday at midnight or something.

Yeah but that kinda destroys the whole purpose

If I could watch a 70mm print of 2001 in theatres, I certainly wouldn’t pass up the opportunity. 2001’s not even a favourite of mine, but I still wouldn’t pass it up.

But why when you could just sit at home and watch it on TV like you can at any other time?

Because some people appreciate the larger screen, the (quite rare these days) experience of seeing actual projected film, being in the company of like minded fans for a special event, and many other reasons.

Some people, such as myself, quite enjoy going to the cinema rather than sitting on my couch at home.
