I chuckled.

Me too, although Screen Junkies didn’t seem to know how to tackle TLJ. The fact that everyone is excited about Mr. Copy-paste returning for episode IX baffles me. Seriously why is Abrams held in such high regard? I would really appreciate it if someone took the time to explain, because all he ever does recreate the pop culture he enjoyed in his youth, and people who are always ranting online about the lack of originality in Hollywood praise him as some sort of visionary. Bullshit!

Isn’t that what Lucas essentially did with American Graffiti, Star Wars and Raiders?

I’ve never seen American Graffiti so I can’t comment on that one. For me personally the best IJ is Temple of Doom, other than that I’ve always been indifferent towards the Indiana Jones series. The reason for the success of Star Wars was because it came out in the 1970s, a time marked by gritty movies like The Godfather, The Exorcist, Taxi Driver and The French Connection, and the fantasy/adventure genre was largely abandoned. Lucas made such a movie and added elements of sci-fi in the form of Space travel and futuristic technology. Making such a type of movie when its predecessors were largely failures or had a niche market at best was huge risk, even the very people involved in the making were certain Star Wars was going to be a failure that would go down in history as a cheesy b-movie that cost a fortune. The wide appeal and massive financial success came as a surprise and made many film studio execs realise that there was an untapped market.
All Abrams does is a copy-paste job of the pop culture of the 1980s at a time when that’s exactly what everyone else is doing it and the market has been exploited to death, yet he is still hailed as a genius. WTF?

Lucas mined the pop culture of his hot rodding teenage years for AG, and the movie serials of his youth for Flash Gordon and Raiders. A lot of Raiders is outright borrowed from an almost forgotten 1954 Chuck Heston movie Secret Of The Incas, that’s curiously never even had a legit VHS release let alone a DVD. You’d think Paramount could clean up selling it as inspiring Indiana Jones.

OK guys, saw the movie a few more times. Still love it to bits but now I notice the movie does indeed have one flaw: when Luke becomes one with the Force his prosthetic hand vanishes along with him. I think it should have remained in the physical realm and dropped.

I hope he didn’t have any fillings.

They told me they’d fixed it!

What about undigested food in his stomach? Did that also become one with the Force? It’s not really part of his body yet, so it should be left behind.

You’d think that vanishing into the Force was sucha clean and peaceful process, but it’s actually more messy than normal death.

When you think about it, Jar-Jar stepping in poop isn’t that out of place anymore, it actually has a long tradition dating back to the very first film:

Hmm . . . “one flaw” . . . . Interesting.

Abrams is a mixed bag for me. When TFA came out, I too was disappointed that it wasn’t more creative. I mean, despite the EU no longer being canon (a dumb, no-good-reason move on Disney’s part), there are still good story concepts embedded in it (e.g., Thrawn has been re-canonized). Why they couldn’t have tapped that treasure trove is beyond me.

Ah, but then came the dud that is TLJ. Ruin Johnson not only dissed the whole franchise – he even stupidly ignored questions and implications raised by TFA. The two movies are barely related to each other.

Say what you want about Abrams: at least he respects what has come before. And it’s for that reason – not cuz I think he’s a “genius” – that I’m glad he’s directing Ep9. I’m confident that if he makes an honest effort he can fix at least some of what Ruin ruined.

Of course the person with Batffleck as his avatar would hate TLJ. The EU was 90% trash. There was no good way you could do a ST and incorporate all the post-ROTJ books into it. Chewbacca wouldn’t be there, he died. Explain Han and Leia had two sons that died etc.

TLJ followed TFA very well. TFA gave us new characters and introduced them into the Star Wars universe. TLJ put them through the paces so now they are the main characters.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Really? Come on, man.

The EU was 90% trash.

Eh, nah, not that much of it.

This I 100% agree with - there was no way we were ever going to get a ST that kept continuity with the EU.

TLJ followed TFA very well. TFA gave us new characters and introduced them into the Star Wars universe. TLJ put them through the paces so now they are the main characters.

I largely agree, but I do still think there was a bit of a disconnect between TFA and TLJ in how certain things were handled.

I’m honestly mostly baffled when people say there’s a disconnect between TFA and TLJ. It’s probably one of the best sequels ever in terms of consistency with its predecessor (while of course also having its own identity).

TLJ did feel slightly disconnected to me the first few times I saw it in the theater, but after rewatching the whole saga in the few weeks before the TLJ blu-ray and then TLJ last night, it feels absolutely consistent. I think it’s a little difficult for me to get an accurate read on the tone of a movie like this until I can see it in isolation from theater audience reactions.

Hmm, not really relevant, is it?

The EU was 90% trash.

That’s simply a false statement. There were hundreds of books, comics, and TV episodes, with a wide variety of writers. That means that on the whole it was quite variegated rather than “90% trash.” There were a lot of great concepts in there; I gave you one example with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Another fine example was almost the entirety of the Yuzzhan Vong series, New Jedi Order, whose basic premise would have been a very, very awesome basis for a film-sequel trilogy.

There was no good way you could do a ST and incorporate all the post-ROTJ books into it.

That’s a fair statement; continuity with the entire EU would have been virtually impossible with a continuing film series. I guess Lucas never planned to do any sequels, and therefore could basically give free reign to EU writers.

TLJ followed TFA very well.

Not particularly.

  • Why is Rey an extraordinary Force-user without any training?
  • Who were the Knights of Ren?
  • Who was Snoke, really?
  • How did the First Order rise from the ashes of the Empire, and under the very nose of the New Republic? After the disastrous reign of Palpatine, why in blue blazes would anyone living in the SW galaxy, especially former Imperials who have a better idea of what was going on, fall under the sway a Sith-type tandem within a mere generation? (Contrast post-war Germany’s rabid anti-Nazi policies and attitude. The EU’s “Imperial Remnant” was much better thought-out and written than what we’ve got in the TFA-TLJ combo pack.)

I’d say there’s a disconnect between your post and the one you quoted.

  • Why is Rey an extraordinary Force-user without any training?

I mean, this is literally explained in TLJ, even if you disliked the explanation.

  • Who were the Knights of Ren?

Not really relevant to TLJ, and they might turn up in IX if they are.

  • Who was Snoke, really?

I’ll give you this one.

  • How did the First Order rise from the ashes of the Empire, and under the very nose of the New Republic? I’ll also grant that this isn’t explained well in the movies, but the current canon EU has explained it pretty well between the Aftermath trilogy and Bloodline.

To return to the WWII comparison, the First Order is more closely analogous to Nazi war criminals hiding out in South America than it is to post-war Germany.

I think a big part of it must be the expectations thing. As evidenced by GothamKnight’s post, if you were expecting something after TFA and didn’t get exactly that, there might be a disconnect for you personally, even if in reality the two films actually fit very well together.
