John Williams says IX will be his last.

It’ll be somewhat sad that we won’t hear his input into Star Wars past Episode IX - though hopefully his legacy and inspiration will be heard in future releases long after IX…

John Williams’ imdb page is something to behold - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002354

Expected, and a good news as a matter of fact. With 3 trilogies, the cycle will be complete. His 9 movement space opera needs to reach an end. An historic one I hope (Ep VIII score is good… but weak compared to the Saga…).

Let the past die

(I hope he’ll be there for the London concert end of october, I got a few tickets to attend it with my family 😃)

Composers such as Giacchino (and Beltrami… yeah I know about Powell but the guy is more inconsistent) can take the Saga after IX.

I find Giacchino to be pretty meh, the one composer I’d love to see return to the SW franchise is Joel McNeely. Seriously, check out his Shadows of the Empire, it captures the spirit of SW music.

It does not at all.

It has some good cues, but I feel like most people who rave about it are looking at it through nostalgia goggles.

I’m a huge fan of R1’s score and think it is on par with the Williams’ ones. In fact it’s better than AotC, but imo worse than the rest. haven’t listened to TLJ enough to have an opinion on that compared to the rest but yeah, Giacchino is pretty awesome.

and I’m glad Mr. Williams decided to go out like that, and not by natural causes, as the latter would’ve been pretty tragic. this way he goes out with style, having scored the (entire?) episodic saga.

If the saga didn’t end with III, it’s going to last until the end of time 😉

You know, I would’ve thought the same, but with how much they seem to be expanding the non-episodic side of things (standalone anthology films, Rian’s film trilogy, Benioff & Weiss’ film series, Filoni’s various animated series, and now Jon Favreau’s live action TV series), they’ve got plenty of content and room to expand to either ditch episodes beyond IX entirely, or sit on it for at least a decade before they do X-XII or beyond.

Cue in Daisy after 40 years. 😃

I have this totally bonkers wish of having Éric Serra doing SW music, which of course will never happen because he’s more synth/electronica oriented.

Not unexpected, but good for Johnny. Constantly scoring Star Wars movies must be exhausting for a man of his age.

One of the worst composer on a SW movie ? No thanks ! 😉

That’s one thing me and Williams have in common

A sad day this will be indeed though for me that kind of happened with Ep6 as the last movie in episodic order that I will listen up to now. I didn’t mind TFA’s soundtrack but it’s nothing special in my mind compared to the OT and PT soundtracks, with it being quite muted at times during the movie in comparison to the others and no real standout new themes.

I can’t even remember what TLJ soundtrack was apart from some licks of each character’s theme playing whenever they were on screen, so the ST soundtracks are pretty much a non event for me though the other 6 movies that came before will always be just as special to me as the movies themselves.

A mate of mine recently commented on me listening to SW soundtracks as if it were odd, him being a SW fan himself so I’ve spent the past few weeks listening to all 6 albums a number of times over to try and create a shortlist of tracks for him to try out. I listed the entire album for ANH though since that’s were it all started and everything is essentially derived from. If he enjoys it hopefully it will cause him to listen to all the albums.

I think SW music is really something to be truly appreciated and without it SW would certainly not be what it is today. Lucas’s purpose in using such music was to try and imbue all that additional emotion into the movie without needing to use dialogue and visuals alone and Williams achieved that to an absolute tee. I need only hear a few bits of a track to be instantly transported back to the scene and the emotions attached to it.

It does sorta get worse as the films go on. Practically every track is a masterpiece, or at least pretty good. By the time you get to TLJ…eh. There are still some great themes in the ST, just not as many.
