Yeah, we are all definately working together at this stage to get clean masters, that is our #1 priority as everything else becomes possible from there.
After that who knows.. Often your destination changes depending on what happens on your journey. We may end up all working on a project that we haven't even dreamed of yet.

Sorry...already dreamed that one

LOL....that would so rock...especially since each master, uncompressed, would just sbout fit on a disc. The quality would be FANTASTIC!

But as Laserman and zion said, there are many possible "dream" projects, so beyond a straight transfer, it's difficult to say what would really come next, or how long it would take.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I'm pretty hopeful that on a DVD-9 the final version of the cleaned up laserdisc master will be almost indistinguishable from the uncompressed version. Will definately be looking at each and every scene after the encoding process to make sure it's as good as it gets.

AM so glad that it is all coming together so well

Can you imagine landing Gary Kurtz for a commentary track - seeing as how he was integral to the production of the OT and kind of passed over for the PT...or even Lawrence Kasdan...

How does the uncompressed quality compare to DVD quality (any DVDs, I'm not referrring to just Star Wars)?

They would appear pretty much like the screenshots you now see, as compared to the official DVDs. There would be absolutely -zero- MPEG compression artifacts.

But will Blu-ray (or HD-DVD...whoever wins) players support the original codec that the x0 capture was recorded with? If so, that would be awesome!

Which brings me to my second question: how good are programs/hardware that can upconvert from 480 to 720/1080? I understand that it doesn't add any detail, but rather repeats lines of resolution, but does it give any noticible boost in quality?

Sorry, I heard somewhere on this thread that the idea was floating around to do an "HD" version (I understand it won't be true HD).

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

We have been working for some time on some scaling technology to see if a HD version is feasible.
The answer is yes it is, and a HD version will look better on HD sets, especially fixed pixel devices such as plasma screen, LCD screens and DLP based technology.
The reason is that the image has to be upscaled anyway to those devices, and external scalers or internal scalers are used to do it. They have to do it in realtime which means they can't used the best methods available as they would be too slow.
If you converted your video up to hidef using the bestest most wonderfullest methods (in technical terms) first, and burnt that to a DVD or file and played that back through your hidef set, the image looks much much better.

Look back a few pages. The process of upscaling video to HD resolution has already been touched on briefly. In a nutshell, upscaling with today's scripting technology does add detail, albeit artificial. If all it did was repeat lines of resolution, there would be no point.

edit: lol, L is always one step ahead of me. I like his answer better.

Here's something you knowledgable lot can probably help me with, I decided to create 1024x436 XviD's from my set for my 1024x768 LCD projector so as you say the scaling/sharpening has already been pre-done to get the best image, but what are the specified HD resolutions? I've tried google searches but can't find any 'concrete' answers other than 720p and 1080i which I know refers to number of lines and progressive or interlaced.

720p is 1280x720. 1080p is 1920x1080. 1080i would have to be converted to progressive to be displayed on any fixed pixel display (anything not CRT), so just stick with the 1080p numbers.

Just tossed some cash your way.. enjoy. Hopefully whenever this comes to fruition you'll remember your sponsors.

We always remember who our friends are - thanks for the help.
I'm eagerly awaiting the new release of your cowclops sponsored effort, both to enjoy watching it and also it is great to have more sources to use as reference/comparison for our internal processes.

It can really help to look at how someone else has treated a particular scene, and to look for details and so forth in it that our processing may have accidentally screwed up or removed and so on. It is really exciting to see this scene humming again after a bit of a hiatus there for a while.

We should have the first of the ANH screenshots up on the x0project.com website in a few minutes thanks to Zion!

Wow, Laserman, the starfield, the moon, and the laser look a lot sharper.

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

We haven't even done the star processing routine on that shot yet, so expect a lot more stars to return to their former glory by the time we are done.

The new screenshot is really of an example of even when you are hard up against the limitations of laserdisc resolution, you can still make it noticably better.
For anyone that has an NSTC laserdisc player, you should find that screenshot looks *better* than it does on your laserdisc player - which is what we are aiming for - You get a better picture than if you went out and bought the laserdiscs and a good player.
Ya can't ask for more than that.

Great work guys, it definitely looks a lot sharper (just the beam alone is a huge improvement). I really liked seeing the 3 screenshots of TR47, X0's & the official DVD side by side (on the last couple pages). Is it possible for you guys to do that on your site? That'd be the ulimate comparison and I'd love to see. Also, are these screenshots compressed or uncompressed?

Well, I don't know if they'll be doing it for their site. . . but I'll be posting the comparison shot here some time tonight. I've done the prior two. Why stop now?

Feel free to post comparisons to the DVD here, I won't be posting them on x0project.com, but I don't mind them being compared.

Some shots are difficult to compare as they are totally different, other shots are untouched on the DVD except for colour and clarity, so they are well worth comparing. From memory on the latest shot, the starfield is completely different and CG.

I'm amazed when sometimes we get close to the DVD clarity wise, as the LD source is so sub par in resolution etc. , but we will always squeeze the best possible image out of every frame of that 80's invention (I still wish they stuck with the name 'Discovision' instead of laserdisc...pass the cheese)

Oh yeah, on compression we should be clear.
It was captured using the huffyUV codec, which is a lossless system.
That means there is not one single pixel changed from the captured image (unlike jpeg, MPEG, WMV. MP3 lossy codecs etc.)

So we are working in what most people would think of as 'uncompressed' video.
Huffy does compress the file sizes a bit, but does it just like a ZIP program does for zipfiles, it just stores them more efficiently without changing one atom of the original data.
Of course when they are posted here, we save them out as jpeg files which degrades the quality a little for your viewing pleasure, but not enough to worry about.

I wonder how people pronounce 'huffyuv'?

I say 'Huff why you vee,' because it's HUFFman compression of a YUV signal. I used to want to say 'Huffy' and leave the 'UV' off, though.
