You Know, It's Funny...

I see a lot of people saying they want the O-OT preserved, but then going and saying they want some of the SFX "cleaned up," removing the matte lines etc.

No offense, but to me this seems like just one huge contradiction.

It's not, because things like matte lines and other technical "glitches" were really never meant to be seen by the viewer.

Well, I, for one, don't want things like matte lines to be cleaned up. The DVD release, though, did make things that weren't visible before, like the "black box" around TIE fighters, be visible when they weren't before, and I'm not sure about that. What gets me are people who don't want the original films changed, but they want George to add back all these deleted scenes from the prequels back in, etc., which seems kind of hypocritical to me. I think the prequels aren't that great, but I still don't want all these changes to appear when I buy them on DVD, which is what's already happening.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Pretty much my view on the whole matter. Take out those damned CG ships, but taking out matte lines is perfectly acceptable in my book. Though I really wouldn't complain if they were left for that matter either.

I think that if we must preserve the original one, we must preserve it with all of its flaws, like matte lines and transparent objects. We shouldn't be preserving those just because we don't want Greedo to shoot first, but because THAT was the real Star Wars, the original one, the one film that deserves all our praises, even though it is flawed.

Of course, for a special edition, all those technical glitches must be removed...

I agree as well. The special editions should have just been the most extensive clean up of the films ever, removing matte lines and all that but not actually adding any special effects and/or scenes.

that would make a nice (the perfect?) 6 disc set. first 3 discs a nice cleaned up set of the OOT, no changes, just special effects tweaked to remove any technical "glitches" as RowMan so nicely called them. and the second 3 discs to have pretty much straight transfers of the films that were shown in theaters when the movies were first released (id even say the cleaned up version has the ANH in the crawl, and the uncleaned version have just the original crawl, but maybe a selectable crawl)

How about 3 discs, but the O-OT and the "cleaned up" versions shown as alternate angles?

Well even as alternate angles their would need to be 2 copies of the movie on each disc if you did it as a three disc set because neither version could reuse parts of the other. and i would prefer it use as much space as possible for the movie to keep the picture as crips as possible.

I figure 6 disc set wouldnt be a problem because they could use 3 dual disc cases that are the same size as regular single disc cases, ive even seen dual disc slim cases so box size wouldnt be an issue (could use the slim cases and throw in a bonus disc or two and the whole set could still be the size of 2 regular size cases.

but another possiblity would be to use dual sided discs, but then you dont get a pretty picture on the disc plus i never know which side needs to be up to get which version (mainly discs that have full/widescreens on the dual sided disc, i swear they arent consistent in this regard).

Id buy something along this lines in a heart beat, it could be like the super collectors edition and have a case in the shape of a Death Star or something, that be amazing.

I, for one, could handle the O-OT either way. You can clean it up or not clean it up. The matte lines never bugged me as they were part of the charm of the SFX of the O-OT. I grew up with those matte lines and actually enjoy seeing them. If he (being GL) wants to clean them up while getting rid of the additional garbage, that's fine, too. I'll leave that to him. Just pull out the added CGI garbage one way or another and give us a DVD set that represents how we saw the movies. And if you want to throw the deleted scenes from the movies in as bonus features, more power to you. I'd love to see all the scenes with Biggs on DVD.

If we're talking about the dvdr sets that are/will be available in the OT Preservation & Fan Edits forum then the X0 Project may have enough differing versions to satisfy everyone.

I think we're thinking about official LFL DVDs. If we're talking about DVD-Rs, I already have a set that is to my preference thanks to DigitalFreakNYC. Came from the Def. Ed. LDs. Great stuff.

DigitalFreakNYC eh? me too - in the times before Rikter, DigiFreak was the only one who would send the OT dvdrs (mine was the anamorphic set, that became known as the Dr Gonzo) to the UK, or Europe, or pretty much anywhere on the planet. A Top Man.
