Info Wanted: Should I put my name on my fan edit?

I’ve completed a fan edit and I’m wondering if I should put my info on it.
“Re-edited by…”
“www…”
“etc…”
Just wondering what the repercussions might be since this is copyrighted material. Also, I would like to edit professionally one day and would hate to lose a job over a fan edit. Then again, if the right person sees it, it might actually lead to a job. I don’t know.

What do you think?

Most everyone puts their name on their fan edits.

But not their real name.

Didn’t Hal put his real name?

Shouldn’t this be in the fan edit section

I would prefer to use my real info, I would just hate for that to come back and bite me in the future.

I used my real name, but not in any of the documentation, just in the credits themselves. I felt weird suggesting a fictional supercomputer did the fan edits. I regret not picking out a more unique screen name when I joined as a youngster.
I also encoded copyright warnings to the beginning of the video stream.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Yep, I was talking about the credits.

Yeah i was wondering about this question too. I use to put my real name in all my early projects, but lately i just put my youtube user name. I’m not trying to make a living out of it so i’d rather people know where to go see more videos of mine by knowing the youtube name then my actual name.

But as far as getting into trouble i dont see why you would. Your not making money out of a fan film, its all for fun.

That’s weird, I’ve been using Hal’s name too.

I’m not really worried about legal trouble, I’m more concerned with how it might impact my future employment as a video editor. A lot of people in the industry are cool with fan edits, but then there are those who are not. I would hate to lose a potential job because of a fan edit I did 2 years ago, or worse yet, get blacklisted in the industry.

So the more I think about it, as much as I would like to use my real name, I think I will just use a fictitious name. I think I will get a website to post my fan edits on. That way I don’t have to worry about YouTube removing the videos.
I was just shopping for domain names and “DarkEdit.com” is available. That might be a good name for a fan edit site. What do you think?

If you’re getting a site to post your edits you should be worried about legal trouble.

I put my alias on my releases for the internet in the end credits, but I have a Private version that has my real name.

Put Extreme Productions on there, I wouldn’t recommend using your real name.

Lots of great suggestions here!
I think I’m going to play it safe and just release it anonymously. I put a lot of work into it and I just want to see what people think of it.
I got rid of the things people have been complaining most about, and the film no longer stops every 5 minutes for a misplaced joke. It’s too bad I can’t discuss the project in greater detail here, but… rules.

You can. The only thing you can’t do here is sharing it directly on this very forum, but there is nothing wrong about publishing a cutlist of your edits.

What does that even mean? If I had to guess I’d think you’re doing a TLJ edit with pirated material.

If I’m wrong you should probably explain what you meant. If I’m right the mods should close this thread.

That’s exactly what i was thinking. And this seemed to confirm that he’s doing a Last Jedi edit:

Well, so, definitely, don’t put your real name in the credits !

If it’s a TLJ edit, why can’t you just wait 3 more months for the Blu-Ray? Maybe even less.

If it’s a TLJ edit, it’s because people suck.

Thread has been locked due to it being a TLJ cam-based fan edit.
