Why not simply look at the source:

DVD Forum

"What does DVD mean?

The keyword is "versatile." Digital Versatile discs provide superb video, audio and data storage and access -- all on one disc."

Those are the companies that developed the DVD Standard, so I guess they have a good idea what they're talking about.

Back on topic: If you ask me, wether I'd bet on Lucas releasing the OT, no, not really. Do I still hope for it to be released: Hell Yeah!

my sense of lucas is that sadly he'll never put out the OOT. he's a stubborn bastard who has said time and again that the SEs (or the SSEs on DVD, or whatever you call them) are his definitive versions of the films. He has little to no respect for the OOT's place in both film history and the hearts and minds of millions of fans.

however, he has always talked about the mega boxed set of all six films. In fact, I recall an interview long ago with Rick McCallum where he described such a release as a "film school in a box"--if that were to come to be, something really huge and comprehensive, probably with the advent of the next DVD format, then perhaps they'd be included in that set.

since finding myspleen and OT.com, though, who needs a lucas release--we've got all the OOT we could ask for right here!

As much as I (and many others) would like them put out on DVD, I doubt Lucas cares to do this to his "vision". I'd say only if someone else had the rights to SW then there'd be a chance of releasing them.

Sadly, I think Dave is correct - only the rights of Star Wars passing onto another may see the OOT released on a digital format, unless GL faces a monetary shortfall of some kind - and that's not very likely to happen...

Well, on the LD releases it also had the same text!! Laserdisc is not VHS either!!! When you say video, are you meaning Beta, VHS, CED, VHD, Laserdisc, DVD? IMO the term video refers to ALL of these media.

WRT to GL releasing the OT.... no he won't.

There IS a version in the works for a boxed set release in I think 2007 with extras added to ALL 6 movies - including some scenes that were filmed with EP3 for inclusion in the other films. AFAIK, there is word that Yoda will be also replaced by a CG Yoda.
Yes, a new SWSE version!!! GL will be tinkering with these for years!!!

Hold on- if you really want to nitpick, if they released an "SE" of SW (original version with the '85 mix, say) and the original versions of Empire and Jedi, then they could still release it without fear that they were breaking their word. It could be the last time the original TRILOGY was released on video, but not necessarily the sequels. Not to mention they lied to begin with because SW was revised in that set.

he will never release it. He will only continue to tinker with his films just to piss all the oot fans off.

Other DVD information learned during the presentation: There WILL be a 6-film box set of the complete Star Wars saga on disc, but not in the immediate future (meaning not this fall at least, and probably not in early 2006 either). Additional tweaks and changes will probably be made to the films by Lucas before all is said and done, but that's for Lucas to determine.
