The mysterious owner packed up and left. From what I read, the mods didn’t know who he actually was or how to get in contact with him. So, there’s no real answer to be had.

In the discussion thread for the Despecialized version of Star Wars I mentioned the crawl, and now I’m curious about something from the TESB crawl.

Some time ago poita posted a preview of a scan of the first reel of a UK theatrical print of TESB (the link is probably dead, I haven’t checked). Upon seeing the crawl in that scan, I don’t see the “smearing” (or whatever it is) that can be seen in the crawls from both Despecialized (which, I guess, it comes from the Bluray) and the Grindhouse scan, specially in the letters that are the closest to the bottom black bar. Maybe there isn’t any discrepancy and poita’s scan was too dark or whatever, but since I have no idea and I’m a n00b when it comes to these questions I prefer to post some screen captures. It’s probably nothing…

Upper images from Despecialized. Middle images from Grindhouse (color corrected by Dreamaster). Lower images from poita:

a request for some assistance with Despecialized from Harmy…

Harmy said:

Guys - I could use some help - I remember some time ago, someone was working on a shotlist for the SW movies and I can’t find it. But what I’d really need is someone helping me catalogue all the shots that need despecializing and making a system that will make it easier for me to keep track of the shots and what they need done.
My idea is this table, where I could keep track of the progress on all the shots:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NwFnvrRp3CnyDOdr9W1__8PLBGwH8WOKkl8mjke8LQs/edit?usp=sharing

So, would I find volunteers, who would help me by going through Doubleofive’s galleries and putting all the shots down in this table and looking them up in GOUT and BD and putting in the timecodes?

When this is done and I start working on v3.0, the plan is to keep the table public, so you guys can check on my progress and every once in a while, when all shots in a sequence have status Pending Final, I want to post the sequence as a work-print and only after I get positive feedback on it, I will mark the shots as final.

This will make you guys more involved again, like in the old times, and it should help keep me more motivated. 😃

Please send him a PM if you can help…

Does the MKV version have more extras than the AVCHD versions ? If so, how do you burn the MKV versions ot blu-ray ?

The only “extra” is substantially increased video and audio quality. AVCHD is just the movie compressed to fit on a DVD-9, with limited audio tracks with lowered quality, MKV represents the full quality Harmy and friends have made available to us (which we can tell you how to burn onto a Blu-ray, if you’re interested, but it will be movie-only). You’d want to look at NJVC’s custom Blu-ray images for a version with extras that maintains the quality of the MKV.

Maybe someone can answer me this question. Its not an issue just something I noticed and wondered if it was intentional… like thats how it was in the theatrical release or not.

So my question is when I view the three mkv files for the DEs the 0 in 20th century fox fanfare points straight up in rotj but sw and esb it slants to the right slightly.

The way the rotj fanfare plays out is also different. The moving searchlights seem slower and more robotic. And the colours and lighting differ from the other two movies as well. Is Rotj fanfare for the DE some kind of recreation rather than a real one like sw or esb?

Crumbs - never noticed that before. Good spot. That slanting 0 looks weird now you’ve pointed it out! The RotJ Fox logo definitely looks a good deal cleaner than in SW & ESB. Perhaps Fox changed it sometime in between 1980 and 1983? However, I remember a discussion about a moving hair on the Fox logo in Team Negative 1’s SSE of SW which doesn’t seem to appear on DE 2.7, so that’s yet another version.

ANH and ESB, for authenticity, would have the slanted 0. RotJ would correctly have the stumpy, straight 0. Also didn’t Williams rerecord the fanfare for RotJ?

There are heaps of variations of the 21st century fox logo. SW and ESB have one made in 1953 with the slanted 0 and ROTJ has one drawn in 1981 which has a straight 0. See http://www.closinglogos.com/page/20th+Century+Fox+Film+Corporation
Chewie, thats really helpful thank you. Always good to fill my head with these little details so I can share with friends and bore them to death haha. Seriously that whole page was really interesting.

Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra recorded the Fox fanfare during the scoring sessions of ESB and it was introduced in that said film. It is this same recording that is used in RotJ and the prequels.

When will The Empire Strikes Back Despecialized Version 2.5 come out, or has it been cancelled in favor of 3.0

We’ve given up on asking the “when” question around here. But I have it on reasonable authority that 2.5 is still expected before 3.0 (and the work on 2.5 will be usable for 3.0, so it still makes sense to do both with a minimum of wasted effort).

So, what will the difference between 2.5 and 3.0 be? Resolution?

I’d say that’d probably be the most significant thing. Probably a lot more defaulting to film elements and stuff like that, but overall, I’d say resolution. Which, it is nice to put out something consistent with the other movie releases before moving on, especially since the work will not go to waste as far as v3.0 goes. Oh, and I’d guess we’d probably see a difference in file size, so hold onto your butts.

Author
Time

I think 2.5 is still going to be 720p to round out the 2.5/2.7 trilogy in equal quality. 3.0 will be 1080p.

Author
Time

I think the 3.0s are going to be more Blu-Ray-y than what we’ve had so far.

Author

ESB v2.5 will be about 90% identical to v2.0 - I just want to fix a few shots and while I’m doing that, I will already do those in v3.0 quality.

So there will probably still be a lot of GOUT - resembling SW 2.5-2.7 more than RoTJ 2.5?

Author

Actually, most GOUT shots will be replaced with 35mm - the main difference between v2.5 and v3.0 will be that with 3.0 I’ll be starting from scratch on the whole thing at 1080p, whereas v2.5 will be the same v2.0 720p master with some shots replaced (just like was the case with v2.x of the other films).

Can you please give a timeframe on when v2.5 can possibly be released?
Really excited for this, even if it’s just a minor update.
I am personally expecting this to come out around May the 4th.

Also, I know v3.0 will be a gigantic update for all three movies, especially since you’re starting from scratch at 1080p. and fixing more issues than the v2.x Trilogy.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Yeah.
But I personally wish we can have TESB v2.5 before the home video release of The Last Jedi.
