I don’t follow industry news that closely, if at all. And it’s your nickel. 😉

I’m only posting this because he makes a specific reference to Star Wars:

Richard Gere has argued his vocal stance on Tibet has cost him Hollywood blockbuster roles because the academy is fearful of alienating its burgeoning Chinese audience.

“There are definitely movies that I can’t be in because the Chinese will say, ‘Not with him,’” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“I recently had an episode where someone said they could not finance a film with me because it would upset the Chinese.”

Fortunately, the actor made it clear he was not upset about not being given the roles for studio blockbusters. “I’m not interested in playing the wizened Jedi in your tentpole,” he said. “I was successful enough in the last three decades that I can afford to do these [smaller films] now.”

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/richard-gere-big-hollywood-movies-china-tibet-buddhist-dalia-lama-chinese-audience-blockbusters-a7693256.html

Besides basic casting decisions (Rogue 1, Independence Day 2016 come to mind), there are also any number of films where the script was altered, in order to accommodate more screen time for the Chinese supporting roles.

And of course, at a more fundamental level, when financing is needed for something that is not a comic book tentpole, Chinese investors will only bankroll state-approved films. There is also the issue of Chinese people in the business who are not allowed to associate with certain film projects in any way, under direct threat to themselves and especially their families back home.

The Last Jedi has now made over 1 billion worldwide and already will soon pass Rogue One.

But I thought it was doing terrible?

Lol.

There has never been a film in the Star Wars universe that performed ‘terribly’ at the box office; even the PT films all made money with TPM performing the best of the 3 and breaking the billion dollar threshold.

My original point was in regards to claims of Rotten Tomatoes reviewers purposely giving TLJ poor ratings out of spite for Star Wars; my suggestion was that the percentage of second weekend drop would be a better indicator of the general public’s opinion of the film. The drop was 67.5% which I stated was BvS territory. Wook made a good point about the holiday being partially to blame and sure enough, the next week saw an uptick in movie ticket sales.

All in all, it will finish 2nd overall in the series behind TFA (with unadjusted gross) and Disney will be happy. And I know that you don’t care about box office numbers, but studios do and often times sequels to films are made or sh#t canned due to box office performance. Truth be told, I am kind of a box office nerd, so for me it is just interesting to see how films perform or don’t in some cases…

It’s actually in the 4k thread…which isn’t really worth reading either lol.

To clarify, when I said earlier that I don’t care about box office, it was true in the context of people here trying to use it show that people hate this movie and have given up on Star Wars. I do find it interesting how much movies make, however,
under various categories (domestic, international, all-time, adjusted for inflation, etc). Boxofficemojo is a fun site for that stuff.

After a few rocky years, Disney proves yet again that is no dummy.

Even if the three films were prequel quality movies, they’d still be turning profit this year. SW is like printing money. If I was a billionare, buying LFL would be a no-brainer for 4 billion when blockbusters are making a billion anyways.

Come on guys, every single topic is about arguing semantics here.

I don’t think this is true. I think every topic turns into a debate about the correct nomenclature.

Yes, which why I said Disney was no dummy, meaning they (The Disney company) knew that they could ‘print’ their own money by giving an audience hungry for more Star Wars just that, more movies…the term ‘no dummy’ although a bit antiquated, is actually a compliment and means that they were smart or made a smart decision.

Monday/Day 18 TLJ take doubled TFA, which would be impressive except it was a holiday. Today’s comparison will be more instructive I’m guessing.

And now Jumanji of all things has beaten out TLJ over the past few days…I knew it was bound to happen eventually, but Jumanji?!? Crazy.

TFA 8.0m
TLJ 7.9m

TLJ is holding its own.

Honestly, I am surprised it crossed $100m.
