TLJ is a film of high highs and low lows, uneven and frustrating. Even the highs are meant to be challenging to accept, so we end up with a mixture of intentionally difficult to accept and clunky stuff which is hard to accept.

@Mjolnir, Based on your last post, I suspect you will dislike TLJ more than not. I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as TFA, but it also doesn’t fit super well with the OT in the way the Force is interpreted. You probably won’t miss much by waiting till it’s out of theatres, but avoid spoilers or you’ll probably enjoy it even less.
Well I guess you can say it has a few point in common with ESB, but no more than AotC does.
I had some issues with the Force Awakens (mostly the excessive rehashing of ANH) but overall I thought it was a fun film and I left the theater happy.
I loved Rogue One and for me it’s the best Star Wars film since ESB
I walked out of TLJ feeling lost confused and unsure how I felt about it. After a few weeks of digesting it I am leaning towards not liking it.
To answer your question though I would definitely go see it. Mark Hamill puts on the performance of his career and manages to salvage brilliance that every Star Wars fan can appreciate.
I think that’s a valid point…despite the wildly conflicting views people have on TLJ, I have not heard anyone say Mark was anything less than great.

Unfortunately I was late getting to this thread but I would have said a definitive “No” based on my own feelings on TLJ (pretty much hated it) and from what you’ve said about TFA (which I pretty much agree with all of it despite mostly enjoying TFA).
Obviously you didn’t like TLJ either and like me, probably wish you could go back in time and decide to not watch it? I’d be interested to see a break down of your thoughts on TLJ like you did for TFA earlier in this thread, though you might need to post it still in the review thread due to the spoiler policy not being lifted till tomorrow on the 15th (going of the date of this post).

I enjoyed the movie despite being extremely critical of it, but I would tell anyone to go watch it regardless, simply because it’s one of the most beautiful Star Wars movies if not the most beautiful one. Plus Hamill, plus several incredibly amazing scenes that are all stuck to a (unfortunately) not very good plot.

Being the most beatiful looking SW movie to date and witnessing an awesome performance by Mark (despite what they’ve done to his character) are two things I can definitely agree, but they’re pretty much the only nice things I have to say about the movie.

I just don’t understand the point. You’ve already seen it and know you hate it so what good would it do to go back in time to just essentially not see it a second time? Or would you go back in time and not know you hated it? In which case you wouldn’t make the decision to not see it, so…?

Hopefully nobody takes that advice and makes their mind up for themselves. My daughters b/f hated TFA and didn’t want to go and see TLJ because of it. He was even more adamant not to go see it after the backlash he saw online after it was released. I finally convinced him to at least give it a try and to make his own mind up, ignoring what he has read. And now he is pissed. But not because he didn’t like the film. He loved it. But he was pissed because he left it too late and is now unable to go and see it again in the cinema because its ended its run and now has to wait until the Blu-Ray comes out. He is actually gobsmacked at the negative reactions the film got. But he did hate the Leia in space scene 😉

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you should see the movie. It has a lot to offer even if it is flawed.

What I think are faults and what I would do to fix them are related, but they are two different things. Most narrative predicaments have more than one possible solution, and in many cases, there is a myriad of possible solutions. There are probably a lot of directions TFA could have gone in that I would have liked, even if it were built on the same narrative foundation that exists in the film.
As for seeing TLJ in theater, what can I say? I didn’t anticipate liking it, and I didn’t want to vote “yes” with my wallet (however small a difference that might make). And yet, it appears I care too much about the franchise to not know what they are doing with it, good or bad, and to not be part of it when it happens. At this point though, I think I’m pretty much checked out of the theatrical Star Wars experience. I’ve given up on the sequel trilogy. But I’ll probably see Episode IX on video just to see what they do. Who knows, I might even have another momentary lapse in principals and actually go out and get the back of my seat kicked.
