Depending on your definition of simple you could use tsmuxer and eliminate all but the dub you want. It doesn’t re encode anything so it only takes a few minutes to save the new file and it’s pretty user friendly.

I don’t think it will save as an mkv though, I think it only does .m2ts so you might have to then open it in something like avidemux and resave it as an mkv if your tv won’t take that format.

Just use MKVmerge instead of tsmuxer, and do basically the exact same thing.

Yep. MKVmerge (aka MKVtoolnix) is exactly what you want here.

I like it but I still prefer McDiarmid as the Emperor in ESB. It would be awesome to see a “canon-friendly” edition with the good changes and fit more in line with the new canon without all the unnecessary scenes and continuity errors created by the Special Editions and Prequels. (Mostly the Prequels.)

i wish they’d reshot that dialogue during ROTJ’s principal photography, or even during phantom menace’s filming. palp’s ROTS makeup looked pretty crappy.

At the very least they should have tried to make him look like he did in Jedi, rather than the hot off the presses (or force lightning to the face) look of RotS, even if they had to go fully CG. Completely ignoring continuity by having him look the same between RotS and Empire ruins any argument or hope that his appearance in Jedi is the result of aging from the natural progression of time and also possibly gradual withering effects related to the Dark Side of the Force. Rather it just shows they had no taste or vision while making these changes. Heck this brings me back around to my feelings about how they handled Palpatine in RotS, with how long it was after Jedi and they still had the same actor, they were in the PERFECT position to age him convincingly with only light makeup touches necessary to show the toll the Dark Side can start to have. Palpatine never came off as cartoonish in Jedi, and the actor himself ended up aging such that he looked increasingly recognizable to his original appearance. To purposely disfigure him in the goofiest way for the purpose of hamfisting in “continuity” was unnecessary as obviously just a little makeup work would have been enough to bridge the gap by hinting at advanced aging / dark preservation, but the chance to capitalize on then-relevant real life political news of a politician who was disfigured by an attack with acid which ended up actually helping his agenda… I guess it was just too much for our “innovative” pal Lucas to pass up.

This actually got a laugh out of me. And really, I doubt they got nominated specifically for Palpatine’s makeup, rather probably despite it (at the very least, that makeup obviously did nothing to help them WIN).

One of the biggest problems I’ve had with despecialized is in the shot where Han has chased the stormtroopers into the dead end on the death star; the one that was changed with a hangar in 1997. The wall on the far right side of the frame was digitally altered in the SE and still appears that way in DE. Are there any plans to fix this?

Are there Star Wars Despecialized T-shirts? I’d love to have one. Imagine a bunch of people all over the world walking around wearing Despecialized T-shirts, helping to spread the word of the original versions!

Not to toot my own horn, but there are preservation-themed hi-res images (see first post for examples) in Project Threepio designed pretty much with T-shirts in mind. They’re designed as famous album covers/Star Wars mashups. I’ve made a Despecialized T-shirt for myself and my oldest son. It would help if you were a Police fan and understand the Ghost in the Machine reference, though – otherwise it’s a bit abstruse.

Hi all, this is my first post, but I’ve been an admirer of Harmy’s work for some time. I really enjoy Star Wars Despecialized Edition, but I had one problem with it that was really bothering me: I think that for all of the mistakes Lucas made when he was creating the special editions, his decision to include the scene of Luke and Biggs meeting in the hangar was a good one. Up until that point we had only ever heard passing references to Biggs, and other than a brief line later on mentioning “beggar’s canyon back home”, there is really no indication that the Biggs who is flying as Luke’s wingman is the same Biggs he grew up with on Tatooine. The scene in the hanger firmly establishes that this is indeed the same Biggs, and it shows us how close the two of them really are as friends (this is even more important seeing as all of Biggs’ scenes from the beginning of the movie got cut in post-production).

The reason this scene is so vital is because it gives emotional weight to Biggs’ subsequent death during the Battle of Yavin, which otherwise does not have much more of an impact than the deaths of the many others who died during that battle. Remember that Luke grew up as an only child, and Biggs was the closest thing he had to a younger brother; by making us see Biggs as a close friend of Luke’s with whom he looks forward to spending a bright future fighting alongside, it becomes all the more tragic when that life is suddenly cut short so close to the end of the battle. I am firmly of the opinion that not only was it a good idea to add this scene back into the Special Edition, but that the scene should never have been cut in the first place.

I decided I wanted to do something about this, so I ripped the scene from the 2011 Blu-Ray version and went about editing it back into Harmy’s Despecialized Edition. This actually took longer than I expected, as I had to make a lot of adjustments to get the color to match with the rest of the film. In spite of this, and after a few hours of tinkering with the color balance, gamma, contrast, and various filters (and a few more hours of trying to get my cheap editing software to export properly without introducing any glitches or artifacts), I think I got it just right. It isn’t “archival quality”, as due to disk space restraints I was working with a 720p down-scaled version of Harmy’s original (which also helped to speed up the rendering time somewhat). However, it still looks great and is a reasonable enough size for anyone to be able to download. Below I have included a Google Drive link for a before-and-after screenshot, as well as a link for the file itself. Since I imagine that the mods would not be happy with me directly linking to the entire movie, I will instead link to a page on pastebin where the direct link can be found.

Yeah, I don’t think linking to another site that contains a link to download the whole thing is kosher here either. Let people who are interested in your version PM you for a link instead. And you might also want to consider creating your own thread for your version, too (in the fan edits section, since adding that scene disqualifies it from being a preservation).

Neat idea though - I don’t think that scene really works without the Tatooine Biggs scenes, but it’s probably the one change made to ANH that I’m close to being okay with.

yep, chainsaw summed it up.

I don’t think it’s a terrible scene. But the r2d2 continuity error sticks out a lot. You could see how well the 576p version of Adywan’s, which is fixed, blends. He’s also working on an HD version.

He may prefer people to ask before using his material, I’m not sure.

Can you explain the continuity error? It shows R2 being winched onto the x-wing, and in the next scene it shows him being lowered into his spot within the fuselage.
EDIT: I studied it closely and i can see what you mean, but I honestly would never have noticed if I wasn’t looking for it.

Also, I will leave the link up for now, and if a mod asks me to remove it I’ll edit the post and start using PMs instead.

I would also argue that it falls under preservation, as it is an original unaltered scene that was shot alongside the rest of the film. I would agree if the scene was loaded with CGI “improvements”, but as far as I can tell it’s exactly the same as it was back in 1977. My color corrections and sequencing revert the scene back to what it probably looked like when it was still included in early edits of the film during the post production process. Deleted scenes deserve to be preserved as well, because at worst they provide insight into the production of the film, and at best they contain something vital to the plot that should never have been removed to begin with (compare Blade Runner: The Final Cut to the original theatrical cut for an example of this).

…yeah, that’s a bad idea around here. Delete the link.

I would also argue that it falls under preservation, as it is an original unaltered scene that was shot alongside the rest of the film.

It’s adding something from one official released version of a film to a different official version of a film. It’s a fan edit, not a preservation.

If you took the scene on its own and restored the part that was cut from it (Red Leader talking about Luke’s father), and released that as its own thing, not incorporated into the film as a whole, that would be a preservation.

Not trying to be a jerk, this is a good idea and something I’m sure a lot of people will be interested in, but it’s definitely not a preservation.

And links, or links to links, are definitely against forum rules. Leaving it up risks a ban (temp or permanent).

I think we were both pretty darn polite in telling you what the forum rules are before getting a mod involved. I don’t know why people join forums with the intention of starting out on the wrong foot. It is explicitly against the rules.

I would also argue that it falls under preservation,

By definition, this is not what a preservation is. Whether or not it’s a nice idea (I think it is) and in spirit with what was produced in 1977 is another matter. And even if one did argue that anything filmed in 1977 is fair game for making it a preservation (this is false, you can make fan edits without producing new material or effects, they are still fan edits), it’s still an edited version of the shot. In 1977, it would have mentioned Luke’s father. Instead, we get a teleporting R2D2 due to the absence of that segment, along with some 1997 crew member that walks in front of the screen. At least it wasn’t a Ronto.

Your link has been removed.

If respected and long-time members of the community here are letting you know you may well be breaking fan edit / preservation rules then have a think, re-read those rules - take the link down - and if still in doubt then ask a moderator.

Ok, I have a very annoying problem.
On my Sony bdp s280, Harmy’s despecialized run fine on my usb flashdrive.
But I try to run another video, h264 as well, and it refuses to play. It’s a french despecialized version that a wonderful guy made. The player is trying to start the video, then nothing happens, it goes immediately back to the usb folder.
Here’s mediainfo of the file:

I am really desperate, I don’t know what’s wrong…

I think it’s most likely the PCM audio in the french version. This should be easy enough to fix. Someone might have a faster method, but what I would do (given that I already have the programs, which are all free):

Demux the audio track with tsmuxerGUI. Import it into audacity. Export ac3. Use MKVMerge to build a new MKV. Drag in your old one as well as your new ac3 audio. Unclick the PCM audio and rebuild the MKV.

Well I suspected the PCM track to be an issue, that’s why I previously made a test version by totally removing the audio files with MKVmerge. And the video still didn’t play. So it seems to be a video related problem. I’m not an expert at all, so I don’t really see what’s wrong since my player can play h264 codec.

your player could also not like the fact that you removed all audio tracks…

seems less likely.

You could mix the working video file with French audio and hope the person that encoded it didn’t mess up the sync somehow.

In any case, it would help show you which part is not working

I merged Harmy video with the PCM track: it plays normally.
So it seems to be a video problem.

There are a fair number of differences between the two files in terms of video encoding, so it could be that your file has been encoded to an unsupported spec that hardware like the Sony cannot play. Harmy’s file for example is encoded to the Blu-ray spec, which is a known standard.
