Gena Richardson says she was a high school senior working in the men’s department of Sears at the Gadsden Mall when a man approached her and introduced himself as Roy Moore.

“He said, ‘You can just call me Roy,’ ” says Richardson, who says this first encounter happened in the fall of 1977, just before or after her 18th birthday, as Moore, then a 30-year-old local attorney, was gaining a reputation for pursuing young women at the mall in Gadsden, Ala. His overtures caused one store manager to tell new hires to “watch out for this guy,” another young woman to complain to her supervisor and Richardson to eventually hide from him when he came in Sears, the women say.

Richardson says Moore — now a candidate for U.S. Senate — asked her where she went to school, and then for her phone number, which she says she declined to give, telling him that her father, a Southern Baptist preacher, would never approve.

A few days later, she says, she was in trigonometry class at Gadsden High when she was summoned to the principal’s office over the intercom in her classroom. She had a phone call.

“I said ‘Hello?’” Richardson recalls. “And the male on the other line said, ‘Gena, this is Roy Moore.’ I was like, ‘What?!’ He said, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘I’m in trig class.’ ”

Richardson says Moore asked her out again on the call. A few days later, after he asked her out at Sears, she relented and agreed, feeling both nervous and flattered. They met that night at a movie theater in the mall after she got off work, a date that ended with Moore driving her to her car in a dark parking lot behind Sears and giving her what she called an unwanted, “forceful” kiss that left her scared.

How does someone who’s not a parent or close family member call a school and get them to summon you to the principal’s office? Getting a phone call summons by the principal usually means a family emergency.

No, but it seems customary to get the approval of the parents in any relationship. I’m not defending him by any means, a 30 year old and an 18 year old is really weird, but I don’t get why asking the parents for approval is weird.

It’s weird when you’re 30. Even if you’re both 30. That’s weird.

Especially if you’re both 30.

Well it’s weirder if you’re 30 and she’s 18 because also you’re 30 and she’s 18.

It does seem like an old fashioned thing to do if the woman is an adult. (If she isn’t, and you are, you shouldn’t be dating her unless you also aren’t an adult)

I don’t understand were the words “Women’s day” left out?

What are Halal Easter Eggs?

Insufficient Diana morning? Does that mean the right wing complains that people don’t mourn Diana enough, or that the right wingers themselves don’t mourn Diana enough?

If we ignore for a moment that he’s 30, it seems somewhat reasonable to ask her parents when she’s 18, whereas asking her parents when she’s 30 seems weird.

Now, a 30 year old man asking the parents of an 18 year old woman is weirder than a 30 year old man asking the parents of a 30 year old woman, but not because asking the parents in that situation is weird, but because he’s 30 and she’s 18.

I’m not so sure. It’s weird for a 30 year old to date an 18 year old (but not illegal cause 18 = adult). But is it weirder to ask the parents of an 18 year old than it would be to ask the parents of a 30 year old? I mean 18 year olds still live under their parents roof in many cases even though they are legally an adult. 30 year olds are usual on their own so asking the parents permission is not necessary.

I don’t know why this is so complicated.

If you’re both 18 - normal to ask parents.
If you’re both 30 - weird to ask parents.
If one is 30 and one is 18, it’s all weird.

Yes, that’s what I’m saying. If we just look at the “asking the parents” aspect, it’s weirder when she’s 30. If we look at the whole situation, I’d say dating an 18 year old when you’re 30 is weirder than asking the parents of a 30 yer old woman. Or maybe it’s more creepy than weird, if you want to discuss semantics.

EDIT: Or what Frink said.

What I was trying to say is that the whole constellation of a 30 year old dating an 18 year old is weird, so by extension, asking her parents in that situation is also weird.

Yes mate, they mistakenly left off the ‘Women’s Day’ from the text.

Halal eggs? http://metro.co.uk/2017/04/16/cadbury-easter-eggs-and-four-other-things-that-are-shockingly-halal-6577659/

Insufficient Diana mourning - The Express and The Mail both love a good Diana story (putting a pic of her on the front page sells copies apparently - and they use her a lot, stories, scoops, interviews with former staff and friends, conspiracy theories, diaries, trinkets etc). It’s like a ‘moral’ (financial) crusade to keep a quite one-eyed memory of her alive.

Poppy rage - people not wearing the poppy. For some reason ‘everyone’ has to wear a poppy - for the last few years it’s become an annual debate - those that do vs don’t and why, plus the intricacies of what the poppy represents (and doesn’t). Some more info here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_poppy

The right wing media laps this stuff up - cheap and easy to write, appeals to many ‘patriots’ and ‘man in the street’ types (apparently), plus a chance to denigrate it’s opponents or critics. It’s a circle of never ending complaining from them.
