Star Wars "Official" Canon Content Thread — Page 6

I loved Catalyst, but holy Jesus was Heir to the Jedi a waste of dead trees.

Catalyst does suffer a bit from Luceno’s dry, overly-descriptive writing style, but that’s more down to personal preference than anything else.

I didn’t much like Heir to the Jedi, either, though I didn’t hate it. It was just mediocre and forgettable.

Heir to the Jedi was a leftover from the old EU. Its only canon by grace of timing.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Timing and the interior contents proved cogent enough to market the book as a noteworthy interquel to SW & TESB (which it isn’t) and a spiritual successor to Heir to the Empire (HA!).

I think I might have actually liked Life Debt less than the first, overall, though it’s better in some ways. Just started Empire’s End.

Heir to the Jedi was maybe the most forgettable Star Wars book I’ve yet read.

Catalyst is really good, but perhaps a little too long in places.

I feel like a curmudgeon saying so because I’ve seen a lot of folks citing it as one of their favorites, but I thought that Aunt Beru story in FaCPoV was fucking awful. Took me right out of it. The only saving grace was the fact that it was only three pages long. One clunker in the first nine stories is still an excellent ratio though. Here’s hoping this was the only hiccup.

It certainly was one of the more pointless stories.

I got Phasma for my birthday along with The Essential Reader’s Companion and Books 11-14 of The New Jedi Order so I’ll hopefully read that before I see The Last Jedi.

Not enough people read the EU.

Finished FACPOV. Overall, I’ll say I enjoyed it. There were a couple clunkers, but that’s to be expected. There were a few stories that established things and the next story established the opposite, which is odd. Were there too many pilots on Yavin, or not enough? Other than things like that, it was a good mix of drama and humor.

I like the inconsistency. Wish the SW universe would hurry up and get to becoming a multiverse without a single “canon” already.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Haven’t finished reading the book yet, but each story is meant to be told from the POV of a different character and they’re all unreliable narrators, so inconsistencies are to be expected.

Frink has an aversion to the multiverse concept. The possibility he may like Mulholland Drive in parallel timelines fills him with existential dread.

This is true. Hell, the Cantina Band story is an excerpt from an autobiography, so the details it has that doesn’t add up with Greedo’s story may be explained away with it being exaggerated for the autobiography reader. Taking that and removing one of the pilot stories completely, the rest of my “canon” inconsistencies mostly go away.

I like that From a Certain Point of View gave the Sandperson who knocked Luke out a name other than, “URoRRuR’R’R”.

Yeah, but who’d have guessed it would be Jake Quasar?

So I just read the mouse droid story in FaCPoV. Is Tarkin canonically gay now? Was that nameless officer someone else like Motti or Tagge? It had to be someone that high up, and all signs seemed to point to Tarkin. I’m totally down with the recent push for inclusivity in SW media, but making the creepy mass murdering Nazi-inspired villain gay feels like kind of a retrograde trope.
