I never had much of a problem with STID but even for me Vengeance was a big step up (probably only a couple little things I would have done differently). I personally don’t think ST09 needs an edit at all (only thing that I’m not a big fan off is the “numb tongue” sequence, but that’s nearly impossible to cut out). STBeyond, could probably use a good edit (if for nothing else than to improve that drab color grade).

Did anyone catch The Orville on Fox? I heard it’s playing it mostly straight and not the wacky Trek spoof the promos made it out to be. Which begs the question of how it’s going to avoid a big fat lawsuit from Paramount.

Because Paramount doesn’t own a copyright on science fiction? Even if they played it completely straight, they’re not stealing anything.

After what they did to kneecap fan films, I don’t put anything past them. Remember when Fox was lawsuit happy while drunk off the profits from Star Wars? They went after Battlestar Galactica, and even wanted to sue over Hardware Wars until George talked them out of it.

I watched Orville and was quite pleased. The visuals are gorgeous, I’m a little surprised they managed to pull that off on a TV budget. The humor can be a bit bluer than I care for at times but it’s not too bad. You can tell they were very earnest with the writing on this series and it feels like a love letter to classic Star Trek. There’s a real heart to it.

So if Discovery turns out to be the disaster in making it seems to be at least we’ll have one decent new Trek series to watch.

Just finished Vengeance. Much improved, didn’t miss any of the removals.

As Jonathan Frakes and Robert Duncan McNeil are supposed to each be directing an episode, the Trek connection is getting stronger.
Maybe they’ll get Patrick Stewart to play a warped version of Picard? 😉

Caught back to back episodes of The Orville on FX tonight. I think I like it! And I’m no Seth McFarlane fan. Recognized the building in one episode as an office complex by the 101 freeway about 15 miles from here. I think Airwolf used it too. Actually went there with my father once many years ago.

Spotted the homage to The Cage in the other episode a mile away. Anyone think that one large alien in the other cage looked like Ludo from Labyrinth?

FOX clearly had no clue how to promote this, so I hope it gets a chance to hit it’s stride.

Anyone here plan on actually subscribing to CBS All Access for Discovery? I think that if I like the TV premiere I’ll wait for the eventual complete season Blu-Ray and watch DS9 in the meantime.

Nope, but I don’t care enough about Star Trek on TV to do that. I’ll have a bigger decision to make regarding Disney pulling off Netflix in favor of their own service.

The fragmenting of paid streaming is pretty annoying regardless.

A reminder that the first episode of Discovery airs for “free” on CBS tonight.

I think episodes are going to circulate on the interwebs the way Enterprise episodes did back when most fans didn’t have a UPN station in their area. CBS is going to take a bath on this subscription thing whether the show is good or not. Sure, some hardcore fans will bite, but how do you draw new people in?

It’s getting totally out-of-hand. When Project Free TV was up, people could plan their viewing and only deal with exactly what they wanted.

This is a total subversion of the purpose of copyright. The content providers are protected in order to ensure the creation and broad access of quality content to all the citizens. It’s not there to permit the dinosaur legacy media combines to limp along for another decade and squeeze out every last penny regardless of the effect it has on the population. Books are not TV or cinema or music.

There should be a sort of trademark protection for characters and specific fictional universe creations for sequels and series, but otherwise, whatever can be broadcast or streamed should be protected in ways that work best for the consumers.

Maybe protection for two years and then redirect monies from brick-and-mortar public libraries to the creation of private-public concession streaming services to acquire the content in suitable form from the providers and reward artistic content creators. The streamers could also run ads at the beginning and whenever play is hit after pause.

^Yeah I saw that on Twitter earlier today. I appreciate the attempt at a different style intro, but it did nothing for me other than make me miss all the starfields from previous intros.

Aye, I thought it quite clever on the technical aspect of it - but it had no emotion or connection for me, and had the same old riff on the music too… I know it’s only opening titles but was a little underwhelmed.

Let’s hope the actual program is better 😃

What the heck was that? Enterprise had a much despised theme song but the visuals were great.

A Starfleet Medical series might be interesting. Or a prequel with Dr. McCoy practicing some frontier medicine?
We saw on TNG there are medical ships.

It’d certainly make for some interesting ideas in potential conflicts between the Prime Directive and medical ethics for those in Starfleet - and with whom they come into contact with.

Also be good to see a different side/focus of the Federation than what we have seen already…

(and maybe even find out what happened to Khan’s super blood - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTc1i74p1_c 😉)

Saw the episode. I liked it, but not enough to subscribe to CBS’ paywall. My parents seemed to like it enough to want to pirate future episodes though, so we’ll see how this goes.

Out of interest how much is CBS’ paywall? And is it generally considered good ‘value for money’ in comparison to other channels’ paywalls?

Iirc, it’s $6 a month with commercials, and $10 without. Other channels don’t have paywalls quite like this, it’s just the streaming companies like Netflix and Hulu. ABC, for example, has a streaming site that’s free so long as you already have standard TV service. Anyway, it’d probably end up being a lot cheaper to wait for it’s eventual Blu-Ray or DVD release (which I assume will happen at some point, right?) than to pay $10 every month until the season ends.
