I don’t think our behavior at this moment is doing much to help new users either. It does feel kind of elitist.

Elitist?

Someone took the time to contribute to the forum over a period of weeks, and now I’m spending a bunch of time to help him out. But another guy just jumped in saying gimme gimme gimme and then called a regular a dick…and got his links anyway, and then called him a dick again. So if anything, we’re rewarding people for being lazy and rude…and so why should anyone be nice? Lazy and rude does just fine, apparently.

That guy will probably go sell his set on ebay now.

The rudeness is not OK, but the vast majority of new users aren’t here to build up a repertoire of contributions to this forum. They just want a cool project. Not everyone has to or wants to be part of this community.

I agree with yhwx actually. This whole setup of having to come to this forum to find what they want is unfortunate.

So many new people to the site seem to be unable to find the ‘Requesting invites to private torrent sites (i.e. Myspleen)’ thread link in the ‘Announcements’ section at the top of the page - and then post in various other threads asking for links and help…

(and have to say a fair few of them don’t seem to look very hard - or have trouble locating even quite public and numerous Star Wars files on public torrent sites…)

would it be better for everyone to sticky the ‘Requesting invites to private torrent sites (i.e. Myspleen)’ thread to the top of each proper thread (like the ‘Project Index: Star Wars Preservation and Other Projects’ is in here) - and also re-title it so it’s a little easier for the newbies to find - and also save cluttering up the other quality threads?

^ Just an idea - and if newbies STILL post asking for links in the various other threads then maybe ‘just’ warn or temp-ban them? - or perma-ban the rude/entitled/dick-ish ones?

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

… and take your time to look around this site before posting - to get a feel for this place. Don’t just lazily make yet another thread asking for projects.

I didn’t mean to say everyone needs to contribute first, I just meant that I’m willing to help someone who does something more than posting “I want this!” without any effort to get it…including looking around the forum a bit and reading the myspleen invite announcement, reading the rules, reading a few pages of this thread, etc. etc. etc.

How much is in the “etc. etc. etc” part?

OK, I do think it’s best if people ask in the appropriate thread, but I don’t think we should persecute them if they don’t.

It´s not okay to be rude, many people just don´t have any idea how to get them, they don´t know what a freaking Torrent is and just want the project. Yes, they should probably read a few forums, don´t be lazy and search, but just point them in the right direction and tell them this isn´t the place to ask that.

If people are rude to him/her all the time, how is he/she going to want to contribute and be part of the community?

Never forget that there’s an entire range of experience and interest on every topic. Some people build their entire collection around torrents and know all the ins and outs. Personally, until I heard about the Harmy versions and started looking at how to get them I just bought evrything and assumed that the only reason for using torrents, etc. was to not pay creators for their content which I don’t believe in. But that’s me, to each his own. And I had never even heard of FanEdits. As a result, it took many weeks of reading, learning to use entire new classes of software, buying the hardware, etc. to be able to get the one set of movies. TUIG helped but at the start a lot of that was still Greek to me. Not everyone can put in the time or money just for just the one set of movies that’s not available for purchase. I don’t fault them for looking for a simple answer. I did too in the beginning and appreciate how steep the learning curve is. I still don’t understand most of what I was doing as I was following instructions found all over. Bouncing from source to source and trying to avoid unscrupulous links, dead ends, and malware does make getting these a challenge for new people, of which I still consider myself to be. And it’s hard to make contributions to the community when you don’t have the knowledge or creative skills to generate new content. Personally, about the only way I’ve been able to contribute is to leave the torrents seeded. But I still have no idea if I’m still a leecher because I’ve only done the few titles that I am intersted in that aren’t purchasable, or that the creator’s specifically requested be seeded to help spread the content.

On the other side, a new person often offends even while trying their best to comply. Although I was eventually provided the NJVC set links and was able to get a copy, I still don’t have a clue about what the right behaviour is. Since they weren’t publically provided, was I supposed to share them or keep them private? I don’t know the answer so I never shared to be safe. I want to respect the content creators so they’ll keep creating because my skills are non-existent. And that’s just on the downloading side. Now that I have the files, what’s the right behaviour? Spread them across the torrent program I use or leave them on the invite only torrent they were moved to? Again, I don’t know so they haven’t been shared. Would I be helping the creator by creating additional sources so they aren’t so overwhelmed with requests or would I just be helping create more eBay scum sellers profiting from the creator’s work? Someone who uses fanedits and torrents frequently picks up the nuanced behaviour naturally, the way a child learns, by frequent and repeated observation of those around them. But people like me who have a more limited exposure and interaction are more like tourists visiting a foreign country. No matter how aware we are of our own ignorance, how much we respect the locals, or how polite we are trying to be; we don’t know what the ingrained offenses are until we make them.

Seems the forum software is in desperate need of a search function. Sure you can use google, but the results aren’t nearly as useful as most forum’s searches that I have used in the past.

Here are some covers to smooth things over

vexedmedia said:

I’ve been holding on to these covers for quite some time now (about 8 months) and I’ve decided it’s time to let them go.

Based on the Criterion layout, these covers present the Despecialized project without cluttering the front artwork. I went with striking images and embellished them for a unique look. These are inspired by JMoomer’s previous designs, which I became obsessed with and decided to work on some originals. This is a set with a theme, and I have more sets designed with the same layout that have different themes (those will be posted at a later date so look out for further posts)

The covers are made for Criterion Single Disc Cases and are FREE TO DOWNLOAD AND PRINT FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY, which I would greatly enjoy seeing photos of.

! PLEASE KEEP THESE IMAGES OFF OTHER SITES !

I made these for the forum members here and I don’t want to find them anywhere else. If I see them pop up on eBay or other forums, the designs will be pulled and I won’t post any more of the many I’ve made.

However, if you would like a set made for you, I am offering to do so.

** IF YOU’RE READING THIS PASSED JULY 4TH IT’S ENDED

The trilogy set will be 40$, 15$ each individually, all in Criterion cases and with an inside print unique to each film as well.

NO DISCS INCLUDED!

those you will have to handle yourself. Shipping only to United States for now. This is a timed production. From now until the 4th of July, you can PM me if interested. Expected delivery by August 1st.

Hope you enjoy the designs and the coming covers.

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Nice covers. Thanks for sharing.

Regarding those who keep asking “How do I get these?” in the wrong threads, I think we should just have a blanket response, such as “Please take time to look through the forum for the answer to your question.” I don’t think we should be answering the question as it just encourages the continued practice of asking in the one place.

I’m not a huge contributor, but I enjoy seeing updates and progress on the various projects. It’s annoying to think there is new information when the thread is bumped, only to find out it’s yet another request on how to get the project.

My biggest grievance is that being incredibly open with new users allows for many to simply “hit and run”. Once they’ve procured what they came here for, they’re gone for good. I understand some people don’t want to be apart of this community, but the least they could do is stick around in the General discussion topics – there’s plenty to talk about here.
