In this Entertainment Tonight expose’ from 1992:

Leonard Maltin refers to Star Wars as having been called A New Hope
Go to 1:25 in the video.

So even by that point(1992) the original Star Wars from 77’ was already forgotten in the popular culture.

I wouldn’t say that Star Wars was forgotten in popular culture in 1992. I was 18 in 1992 at the original trilogy was still very highly regarded. Sure, it wasn’t the “hot new thing” anymore, but the OT was still considered to be a high-water mark in mainstream sci-fi cinema, and almost immediately gained the status of “classic.”

And Leonard Maltin didn’t really refer to Star Wars as having been called A New Hope per se… he said “you may recall that the opening title of the original Star Wars film labelled it Episode IV: A New Hope.” Being labelled something does not mean that it’s the official title necessarily. In fact, earlier in that same video he refers to the entire original trilogy as “Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi” (0:41 in the video).

Star Wars was known as Star Wars until at least the early 2000’s. Even the 1997 poster and advertising called it Star Wars: The Special Edition not A New Hope. I still call it Star Wars because I’m a pretentious jerk who likes be elitist.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Because if there’s one thing that illustrates the state of pop culture in our world it’s…an unrelated sentence from Leonard Maltin.

Remember when I said that not getting the OOT until 2020 might be a good thing because then it would almost certainly be included in 4k?

Well, Blade Runner is being released on UHD later this year, but the final cut is the only version actually being presented on the new format.

It makes sense from a certain standpoint, as the final cut has been ready to go in full 4k ever since it was put together in 2007. The other versions would only have been mastered at 2k, if not 1080p HD.

But it doesn’t even look like the other versions will be included at all, not even on regular bd. This kind of retroactively makes the old blu-ray collection a favor to the fans.

I wouldn’t be surprised, even if the OOT recieves the proper treatment someday, to see the non-final versions eventually fade into memory. Lucasfilm only wants there to be one official version of the saga, and historical curiosity has the potential to get in the way.

4K just opens the door for more screwed up color timings on old movies than we’ve suffered already. And overcooked Atmos mixes with no original audio mix in sight is already a thing.

Not going to happen. The difference in quality between the two versions is stark. When the originals enter the public domain, the SEs will quickly be forgotten.

The SEs aren’t just a different version. They are inferior in many fundamental storytelling and filmmaking aspects, which have been discussed on this forum at length.

They can release these films in 20K (exaggeration), for all I care. I won’t be buying it unless it’s the OOT.

I liked The People vs George Lucas. Is it time for a new documentary? One that focuses specifically on the special editions and lack of availability of the originals?

Wasn’t a sequel in the works not long after the Disney deal happened?

Yes but seems to have disappeared without trace.

IIRC, someone even started a thread here asking for our feedback.

I never heard about a follow up, interesting. I thought the original was pretty fair to be honest.

It does seem to have disappeared totally; it all went quiet, the website taken down, nothing since.

To be fair there isn’t a story there for a sequel so I wasn’t surprised.

Maybe they could just make The People vs George Lucas: Special Edition with new scenes added.

Actually… that would be kinda of meta.

Delete the original DVD and only make available the edit…

I can’t stop thinking about a new documentary now. One that shows all the changes, everything GL said about the GOUT, Harmy and other fan projects, and even show a few other movies that have been partially or completely lost because they were not properly preserved. Wish I had the ability to make something like that.

Maybe we could make our own doc? The logistics of interviewing people scattered all over the planet is a bit daunting though.

It would fun to do, last I checked there’s not much stopping people from making documentaries about movies, I think that would be considered fair use?

Since there are many mainstream documentaries without music or images from the subject matter I would say “fair use” is something people pay for these days.
