Any interest in professionally made box sets for Despecialized? — Page 2

I would love a professional set of slip cases. I make my own labels, case covers, inserts, even boxes - but for some reason my slip cases never come out well at all.

I had the same struggles with the slips I tried to DIY; I never could quite get them the way I wanted.

I contacted Jose yesterday; hopefully he will join the boards in the next few days and be able to field questions and get this project off the ground.

Well… hello to everybody.

I have been invited by one69chev to join these forums in order to discuss in this particular thread.
I don’t know exactly how to begin so (I hope one69chev doesn’t mind) I will make a copy/paste of the answer I gave him last week when he first told me about this project.

After that… I will answer all of your questions and we will see if the project goes on.

First of all, let me ensure that I understand what you are asking for: you want somekind of collector’s edition with a steelbook inside a boxsed set; something similar to what KimchiDVD or FilmArena or HDZeta are doing, isn’t it?

It would be something like this, correct?:
— Steelbook + Fullslip + Postcards + Booklet + Numbered Card + etc
Something like the attached image?

If that is correct, you can check my blog: I am, in fact, making designs in whick I include booklets, artcards and so on…
The only difference is that, in your case, we need to add a steelbook to “our edition”.
I can customize steelbooks using adhesive vinyl:

  • first of all I have to disassemble the steelbook
  • after that I have to paint it using a spray paint in order to make disappear the original design it had
  • after that I place the adhesive vinyl (printed whith our new design) in the front, back & spine
  • the interior of the steelbook also has its own printed design
One important thing: the steelbooks we use have to be plain, flat… with no embossed or debossed details, obviously.

You know my prices. At the end, this collector’s edition could be something like this:

  • Fullslip: 12 euros
  • Inlay: 2 euros
  • 24 Pages Booklet: 15 euros
  • 8 Postcards: 6 euros
  • Numbered (Laminated) Card: 1 euro
    Total for this: 36 euros

About the price to customize the steelbook: you have to speak with your group and, if you are really interested, I will check the prices for the adhsesive vinyl in the printing house.

And about the price for the original steelbooks we are going to customize: I will have to check around the web in order to find them as cheaper as possible (10 euros each one, maybe???). This will have to be done when there are a definitive list of the people interested in the project, so that the price can be divided between them all.

BUT… there is another different option: if not possible/easy to get the steelbooks… we could make a new digipack for your group only. I would design it from the beginning and show to the group each different part of the design process so that you decide how you prefer it (well, obviously, this has to be done also in the option we were speaking before: you are always who are going to decide if the design is correct or not).

If you choose this option, prices would be like this:

  • Digipack: 25 euros
  • Inlay: 2 euros
  • 24 Pages Booklet: 15 euros
  • 8 Postcards: 6 euros
  • Numbered (Laminated) Card: 1 euro
Total for this: 49 euros final price… without having to wait for prices of the steelbooks, vinyl, etc.

About shipping costs: are all of you from Poland? If so… I was thinking about sending one package each 7-10 days to one of you (the person you decide) with about 10 collector’s editions finished. The addressees of these 10 sets would share shipping costs from Spain to Poland… and then, the person from Poland who received the package would be the one who distribute the sets in your country: I think in this way shipping costs will be cheaper for all of you.

Both those options sound absolutely amazing - I am 200 % on board!

I think, however, that we are from all around the world. I am from Denmark, for instance. So we need to work out the shipping situation.

Very interested - and thank you and welcome to the forum JoMaSanRa 😃

I’m in the UK (would prefer a Digipak option, but am happy to go with what the majority decide) - yours is a great idea re shipping to help cut postage costs.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

is there also an option for a full box to house the 3 film cases?

If you are from all around the world, maybe we could make a list of all of you who are the project.
And then we could use the list for a couple of purposes:

  • first of all, having a real idea of how many editions I will have to do
  • divide the participants according to your country of origin in order to think how to organize the different shipments
  • if you decide to make a numbering card, your number could be the number in the list

About deciding between steelbooks, digipacks or fullslips.
If you want my opinion, I would take steelbooks off the list of options. This would be the most expensive option, the more difficult to do and (I think) the one that would be worst looking: it nevermind how good you are in customizing steelbooks, in the end, you will see it is a steelbook with three stickers on it.

Digipacks would be the second option if we speak about prices and, probably, it would be the most beautiful option.

Fullslips for your own steelbooks. I am almost sure you all have the steelbooks for all the seven ‘Star Wars’ movies, so this would be just “upgrading” those steelbooks adding a fullslip, a inlay, a booklet, some postcards, a numbering card or whatever.
This would be the cheapest option because of the different in price between a digipack (25 euros) and a fullslip (12 euros)… as the price for all the rest of the stuff would be the same in both options.

But… this is just my opinion and this is your Collector’s Edition.
So, you decide.

Sorry but what would a total set be in US dollars? I am very interested but on a budget

Then I agree that digipacks are the best options.

But what do we do in terms of specs and such? I assume our own Despecialized sets vary in terms of audio options, subtitles, special features, number of discs (anywhere from 1 to 3 per film) etc.?

That is true that there is a great deal of variance between versions of Despecialized, but if we look at the NJVC set, there are really only 2 options, 25 and 50 GB. Using those as a template might simplify the process, but I am sure that Jo can explain to what level we can customize our printed materials.

In terms of full slips vs Digi packs, I would prefer the full slips for my Criterion Cases and after test fitting one of my cases in a steelbook full slip Jo made for me previously, I found that the Criterion cases will fit his steelbook slips…so we are good there.

I think that getting a point person for the countries represented by the community and selection of designs/options seem to be the next logical steps…

I’m casting a vote for digipaks. Your 007 digipaks on your site are beautiful…if you did something like that for NJVC’s set that would be amazing. Also, USA here FYI.

Personally I would LOVE to see a Digipack-adaption of Stealthboy’s gorgeous Criterion-like designs.

I think the specs should be relatively generic so we could use these for any number of preservations. Just including simple things like year, aspect ratio, and run time should be sufficient.

Yeah that’s probably a good idea.

Personally, I am not a fan of tecnical aspects.
If you give a look at my designs you will see it: just year, country and duration.

About customization of different options to anyone of you… I think you are not going to be too much people; I am reading answers from 5-10 of you. So, I guess it will not be a problem having some kind of personalization if you want.

In fact… to be sincere, I don’t see interest in a design made for the members of ‘Original Trilogy’ but in a specific design made for each of you.
Maybe you should think about that. If finally there is a different design for each of you… I think this should not go on as a project of the community and I would prefer speaking in private with each interested member.

Best,
JoMaSanRa.

I would Love this to be a community Design. I would put up some of my own designs for the pick if anyone wanted to add and see what is liked.

Hi Jose,
Wow, that is extremely generous of you. Thanks so much for the offer. I will be in touch!
