What is your preferred browser? For Mobile; for Desktop? Why?

Author
Time

I use Firefox. I’ve used Firefox for a long time, and I use it on Android and on PC. I switch to other browsers now and then to see if they’re better, but I always switch back because FF does something that Chrome or Opera or IE/Edge can’t.

What browser do you use on mobile and/or desktop? Why do you prefer it over something else?

Firefox, but I got no religion for it anymore. I switched back in the day when Firefox (or Mozilla Seamonkey) was the only thing going, and everything else had some major problem. Now you’ve got two really good browsers to choose from. I guess I only switch when something is woefully wrong, though, and so far I haven’t hit that with Firefox. If I ever do, there’s Chrome. Speed/battery life comparisons don’t matter to me beyond a certain threshold of “good enough”. We’re already there as far as I’m concerned–two free, cross-platform products that do everything you need, what’s not to like about that?

I do have fond memories of Lynx though. I even remember Gopher 😉

Firefox for desktop. I hate mobile browsers, near unusable.

That’s not really an answer, unless you’re saying you never use your phone to look stuff up.

I prefer Opera for mobile. Used to use Firefox on desktop but using Chrome these days.

I don’t. I’m on the verge of replacing my smartphone with an older, more durable flip phone from 2006.

at work i usually have firefox up on one monitor for certain apps/sites, and chrome up on the other for everything personal.

for mobile i whatever is closest to chrome just because.

One major reason why I keep coming back to Firefox is its add-on integration with LastPass (my password vault). Chrome for Android doesn’t let LastPass autofill; and Opera for Android doesn’t have an option to disable Opera’s built-in password manager. Also, Chrome for PC annoyingly disables addons that aren’t downloaded from the Chrome Web store.

Among other reasons.

Firefox basically does what I want it to and doesn’t complain about third party addons.

This is madness…weren’t you born in 2006? 😉

SRW Iron - a chromium based browser (basically the same functions as Chrome - but without so much of the data/info collecting & snooping done by Google).

Have used it for a few years - impressed with what it does (and doesn’t), very reliable - as well as benefiting from near on ever add-on from the chrome web store working on it too 😃

https://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php - also has a useful multi-language forum for users to ask any questions and report any faults/errors or just give feedback etc.

It’s also available for Mac, Linux, and Android, as well as Windows.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Putting aside the convenience of having the ability to access the internet at a moment’s notice anywhere you are (something that ranges uneccesary but nice to almost essential, depending on the situation), flip phones are a pain in the ass when it comes to texting, which is how the majority of people communicate these days. Durability means little, because I have a case, my iPhone is actually less scratched/chipped than any of my previous devices (as in, it has no scratches at all).

For my phone I use Safari. Never had any reason to use otherwise. I also use Safari for my laptop, though there have been a few instances where I’ve noticed Chrome would be better (my bookmarks are on Safari though so I haven’t been eager to switch).

Okay, I’m gonna raise my hand now. I don’t have a smart phone. I don’t have a flip phone. I don’t have a cordless phone. I have a phone at home with a wire that goes into the wall. I also have a phone at work with a wire that goes into the wall. That covers every possible phone scenario for me. Either I’m at work and can talk to you on the phone, I’m at home and can talk to you on the phone, or I’m at neither place and have no interest in talking to you on the phone, so leave a message.

Want to text me? Too bad for you. If it’s not important enough for you to make the call, it wasn’t important enough for me to read anyway. For Internet I got a laptop, but the Internet’s not really necessary.

Now, all of you, off my lawn.

For receiving texts, you could create a Google Voice account. Your could even have it forward text/voice messages to your email.

Yeah dahmage has it. I actually got into computers back when the whole point of computers was to avoid dealing with people. That was the draw. Now we’ve got all this awesome tech and people just waste it on communication. Besides, I only check my e-mail every few days, and that’s not the response time people look for on texts.

Theoretically, texting is faster with a flip phone. That is, if you get skilled at feeling where the buttons are without looking. I had a friend who was blazingly fast at texting with one hand, blind (even with the phone in his pocket), and he could do it while holding a second conversation. That’s not possible with a smartphone.

Sadly, this person committed suicide a few years ago. I don’t think that the two are related, but I mention it as a disclaimer, just in case…

I mean, if my life revolved around only home and work, then yeah I guess I could see why it wouldn’t be necessary.

As I live my life now, though, many things would be impossible without a mobile phone.

on the other hand, i would argue that smart phones are part of the age of missinformation, and have probably contributed to the current political / social climate. so maybe we will find we can’t live with them either.

There will be nothing after smartphones. Verizon will control this country in a chokehold for the next 15 years. By then it will be too late; all life on Earth will be condemned to keeping their eyes down. The universe around us will become a sterile void all because of a handful of sociopathic telefirms.

This thread needs to be kept alive.

Generally speaking, Chrome, because it’s on my work computer and I don’t feel like bothering the tech guy to install anything else.

For mobile (iOS 8.something, iPhone 6) I use different browsers for different things. I use safari for quickly looking stuff up, iCabMobile for downloading files, Dolphin for streaming audio, and Mercury for reading long articles which require my full attention. I guess my favorite would have to iCabMobile; it has served me well for years.
