Woh! another cool cover from Rik - hope there'll be some cool discart too for ep3 as well m8?

Seriously sweet covers - reminds me of the Palitoy (Kenner in the USA?) SW toy packaging of the early 80's

Very satisfying to hear that MagnoliaFan is already on the case for ideas of an Ep3 Edit too - the circle WILL be complete...

Once I get the Episode III Edit the circle will be complete for me too!

Hey Rik, can i get a copy of those covers

heh, just kidding, but on a serious note. will your next cover torrent be of the same format of the most recent one (loose files/folders) or will it be like the one before that (zip file)

i think you should keep it in the same format of the most recent one that way those of us that downloaded it can just jump on the torrent and get the new files/updates and help seed.

also, nice work on the covers and is that the 'official' title MagFan is using for his edit?

Just curious whether anyone knows if Magnoliafan has any intention of making further changes to the alien dialogue in BOTF and TCW. With all of the good ideas packed into his re-edits, it's a shame that the current scrambled foreign language tracks are so distracting.

I look forward to the Magnolia version of the six-film cycle, though I must profess a certain admiration for the Lucas version as well.

I can't really speak for MagFan, but as far as I know the current versions of Ballance and Clone War are the final versions. You could ask him yourself... I agree that the alien dialogue tracks are very distracting.

Sorry to weigh in so late...I don't have much of a chance these days to take part in the discussions...
After watching both, I was VERY impressed by MagFan's versions. Aside from a couple of mis-spelled words, the edits are top-notch. MagFan, thank you for you very hard work.
Rik, thank you for the DVDs...

I downloaded a package called "All in One Codec" and it worked for both movies.

Magnoliafan,

I watched "Balance of the Force" over the weekend, and would like to give you some feedback, after I've been discussing it with friends and reading up on your stuff.

Before I start, I'd just like to get out that I think you did a fantastic job with your source material, so I'm not going to go over every little thing I liked.

Unfortunately, my main beef with the prequel trilogy can't be fixed with editing techniques. I think that Lucas took a step backwards by adding in the supporting cast from the original trilogy, where they didn't fit. The idea of C-3P0 being made by Anakin, R2-D2 being partnered with Anakin and Obi-Wan, Chewbacca and Yoda being friends, Anakin being friends with Greedo, Boba Fett being the same as stormtroopers, etc.... just didn't sit right we me. It seemed as if the entire universe consisted of 12 people over 60 years...he made too much of an effort to tie up things that were otherwise unrelated. Before it was all over, I expected to see a baby Lando somewhere.

I do think that Lucas did a few nice incorporations, though...especially in Episode III, with the subtle addition (I'm surprised Lucas didn't have him walk in front of camera and wave) of Tarkin, and the cut scene involving Mon Mothma. ...some early Ackbar stuff would've been nice, too

That said, the movies were still enjoyable for me, despite their cheesynees, due to childhood attachment. Your cuts take away the obvious cheese, but some things remain.

Regarding the added scenes from the DVD, I felt that some were apropo to add, others not.
- I feel the scene added in the pod racing segment with the Tuskin Raiders and Jawas works well.
- I think that the scene of the submarine arriving and falling off the cliff adds nothing to the story, hurts the character that you've made for Jar Jar, and ultimately hurts pacing. One of the biggest problem in Episode I is that it takes forever to get through the Pod Race, and the story drags.
- The addition on the scene before the race is good, but Anakin's "wake up acting" and head shake thing are unbearable.
- I think that you could stand to lose the scene where Quai-Gon checks his blood. It adds nothing and again, slows us from getting off Tatooine.
- Watto's new lines are great.
- I also think that some more of Jar Jar's goofiness can be removed from the final battle.

You really have your work cut out for you in Ep III. ...much less cheese to delete, and the pacing works as is, for the most part, but you'll have to change the ending entirely. I'm interested to see what you'll come up with.

If you read the original draft of Revenge of the Jedi, by George Lucas, it will be clear to you that there is a 'rule of two' and the emporer is cutting Vader out...

Additionally- to settle this Dooku issue -- it is obvious that he needs to be less black-and-white and more charismatic. Unfortunately, it is obvious that he isn't Sidious. Also, we don't have the key 'Lost 20' scene which would make the whole story work. As such, suggest leaving orange saber, but dub 'Sifo-Dyas' as 'Lord Tyranus' and re-insert the final scene... to reveal that he who is running the droid army in fact creating the opposing army. This will, I think, be quite a suitable ending.

...also, the Yoda fight in Episode II needs to dissapear in its entirety.

Not really. That's never a possibility. Return of the Jedi makes that painfully clear. Palps wanted Luke to kill Vader. Palps was fully prepared to let Vader kill Luke. There would never be a possibility of a Evil trinity no matter how you tweaked the prequels.>>

If that was never a possibility, Vader wouldn't have blocked Luke's swing at the Emperor.
WHAM! Sidious is dead, Vader is Emperor, and Luke has turned to the dark side.
Vader seemed to be under the impression that there were going to be three of them, even if it did turn out that Palpatine did intend to repay Vader's betrayal in ESB with one of his own.

>>Also, I think your switch from Dooku DEFINITELY being a sith to being some kind of "maybe-bad-guy/Dark Jedi" easily kneecaps the entire point of the character at the least, and simply makes the mystery about him redundant as well, especially considering his role in Episode III. You have to have his vagueness wrapped up in Episode II, otherwise it creates problems for Episode III. The Yellow Saber ruins that. Hell, it factors into that Return of the Jedi climax as much as anything else--Palpatine's ability to turn Dooku and get him to resign from the Jedi is a main reason he smiles and grins at Vader for suggesting he can turn Luke. you take that away from Dooku by giving him a yellow saber and not outright making him a sith, you completely weaken not only the ESB scene, but the force behind Palpatine's taunts in ROTJ.

The change doesn't kneecap the character at all.
That one scene kneecapped the entire film in Episode II. It took what could have been an interesting cliffhanger mystery and spoonfed you the answer before it was in any way necessary.
It would have been like having Yoda tell Luke that Vader was his father at the end of ESB instead of in Jedi. People argued for three years after ESB that Vader was a liar and not really Luke's father, or that he was a clone of Luke's father, until Jedi resolved it definitely. I have several old magazines from then with articles debating it.
Also, it can still easily be revealed that Dooku is a Sith in Episode III, if I decide to make him one. Likewise, it could just as easily be removed altogether.
It in no way effects the scene in ESB, other than removing contradictory information.
If there were a rule of two in place in Jedi, Vader would have agreed to kill Luke, then hidden him from the Emperor and tried to turn him... and he certainly would NEVER have taken an unturned Luke before the Emperor in Jedi. If Dooku were a Sith, and we know how he ends up in III, Vader wouldn't need to be a rocket scientist to see how that was going to end up.
Also, the Emperor's taunts are totally irrelevant to any of the changes I made. You won't really see how much they mirror a scene in the Prequels until EP III, and its Anakin who is on the recieving end of the taunting then.

Who cares what Lucas said? As far as the movies themselves are concerned, you have to assume that there was some interaction with the Sith at some point after the 'rule of two' went into effect. This only makes sense, given we don't even know the reason for it inside the movies.

And the proof is in the pudding -- because Yoda knows it.

It would make a lot of sense to make Dooku the good guy even in Sith, who captured the villian finally, only to be killed...

We must be able to get audio of Christopher Lee saying something like 'no, you don't understand, he's..' (over his shoulder) then a quick cut to palp 'kill him!' and the head comes off.

Also, if we cut out anakin killing the tuskens (go off on his his expression and the twisty violins) then the mediocre scene with him and padme where he confesses isn't just a confessions.. it will be more powerful, because it's a revelation.

In the chase scene in episode 2, the cut i did about 2 years ago has obi wan looking out right after anakin jumps, then his pov of anakin falling, then we fall with anakin, then he lands on the ship and moves into the distance, then obiwan (already looking over, having watched all this transpire) says 'i hate it when he does that' and then we cut to zam whateverhernameis jerking up on the steering wheel.

magnoliafan--- re: the jumpcut leading to you cutting the 'i think he was a she' line (although it works better, i think, if that's a suprise) did you consider key-ing in someone passing in front of the camera? given the crowded nature of the scene, it should be easy. Let me know if you want any help with anything like this....

Saw Episode 3 at the cinema for the 1st time yesterday - can only say that as before with the Prequel Trilogy - while some segments of the film were great - others left much to be desired, esp some of the dialogue.

Magnolia - we patiently await your Ep3 Edit...

Guys,

I wanted to thank all of you for your work on the re-edits - haven't seen any of them yet but I'm dying to ! I started doing a rough re-edit of AOTC after reading about the "Balance of the Force" online. This forum is indespensible and so far the definitive source for re-edit info. Tried PM'ing DigitalMan and would be interested in any other avenues (Rikter ?) to get the best edits at this point. I've seen ROTS twice and can't wait to either see the first efforts here or start a re-edit (in this case more of a re-construction) myself of this one !

(Here's a first post from a lurker who can't keep quiet anymore.)

Magnoliafan,

I recently saw your edits - thanks for a great effort and a great improvement on the original! I'm looking forward to your version of episode 3.

If I understand correctly (from browsing this thread), you might polish the edits a bit more. For this reason, I thought I would give you the following feedback:

I agree with earlier posts that the backwards dialogue doesn't quite work. I don't mind the idea in principle (to make them sound alien), nor do I mind the use of Spanish and German. The problem with the backwards dialogue is that it isn't fluid enough. To my ears, every cut made is apparent (though this could just be an illusion of sharp attacks of backwards speech), and to be reminded several times each sentence that edits have been made detracts severely from the immersement into the film. This is in sharp contrast to your visual edits where the seams are well hidden!

A small comment about the Spanish dialogue: for me this works well when the characters speak a foreign tongue among themselves, but I would prefer if they switch to English when they address an English-speaking character. Again, as someone else pointed out, the alternation of languages in a conversation in your edits has an unintentional humorous effect, as it suggests that everyone has Babelfish in their ears!

I am very happy that you managed to get rid of the most of the cringe moments. But I desperately wish that Anakin's mass-murder confession had gone to the garbage bin as well. For me this is a major fingernails-screeching-blackboard-moment. Terrible writing by Lucas - I can't imagine any actor that could have made those lines convincing. I wouldn't want to remove the whole scene though, because I think it's important to show the beginning of Anakin's fall. Possibly a few cuts could improve it though - here's my attempt:

Lines I suggest be cut are in [brackets]. Lines I wish were never imagined in [[double brackets]].

---

(Padme enters. Anakin is tinkering with something. He is obviously very disturbed.)

- I brought you something. Are you hungry?

- The shifter broke. Life seems so much simpler when you're fixing things. I'm good at fixing things. [Always was.] [[ But I couldn't. Why couldn't I save her? I know I could have! ]]

- Sometimes there are things noone can fix. You're not all powerful [Ani]. [I cut "Ani" because of overlap with next line.]

- [[ Well I should be! Someday I will be. I will be the most powerful Jedi ever! I promise you! I will even learn to stop people from dying! ]]

- [ Anakin!?! ]

- It's all Obi-Wan's fault! [[ He's jealous! ]] He's holding me back! [Can insert "Anakin!?!" instead of "He's jealous!"]

- What's wrong Ani? [Or alternatively, replace this line with "Anakin!?!"]

- [[ I ... ]] I killed them. I killed them all. [They're dead. Every single one of them.] [[ And not just the men. But the women. And the children too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals! I hate them! ]]

(He sits on the floor. Padme crouches beside him.)

- I'm a Jedi! [I know I'm better than this.]

(Padme consoles him.)

---

I think these cuts would work, technically and contextually. And the scene would be improved. What do you think? For a more creative bonus idea, possibly some quick shots of Anakin's haunted face during the deleted "And not just the men" lines could be interweaved with quick flashbacks from his revenge on the Tuscans. I mean very short cuts. This would follow the golden rule of film (which Lucas broke here): show, don't tell. Just a crazy late night idea, not sure if this would work.

Feedback welcome!

Hello all. Noob here. This site was recommended to me by Indy3 and i must say i'm very impressed. This looks like a great place for disscustion and banter for us lovers of Star Wars.
May i also say after reading magnoliafan's review on his TPM edit my jaw had droped to the floor. Everything about what you have done is what i want in episode one. Plus i'm sure your Clone Wras will be much the same. Bravo!! I don't suppose you could copy these off for me by chance onto PAL DVD (I live in Britian). These sound so good. Pretty please. I'll be your friend for life. lol.
