Agh I spent ages looking for the last blog I saw that pic on, and it just says “Richard Marquand and a Darth Vader stand-in”. It’s weird that this is just the new lightsaber scene and not a stunt, maybe he never got credited if it was just a reshoot for that one moment. Interestingly his cloak is over the chest armour like the original costume.

FYI stand-ins don’t get filmed. They’re there to set up the shot.

I think to remember (from the Making of book) that it’s a pick-up shot, with someone from ILM, and only his hands were filmed. (when Vader looks at Luke’s new lightsaber)

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I hope he wore that cap during the close up

The costume almost looks too big on this chap. So an insert shot makes sense to me. Also note the Endor backdrop seems rather small. This could have been shot at ILM months after principal photgraphy wrapped.

Also, the robe is on top of the chest armor.

Who is this guy? I didn’t know there were other people in the Vader suit other than the three OT guys.

According to The Making of Return of the Jedi (iBooks edition, page 577) it’s Harold Cole, a stage technician. He is in front of a painted backdrop, and the shot would only include Vader’s hands.

Cool, thanks! I’m missing the last Making of book.

Lots of the lightsaber fight scenes were done by other actors. Apparently Prowse was bad at it and broke too many props.

No actors were used in fight scenes other than Prowse. I thought Bob Anderson (stunt guy, not an actor) did the fight scenes and he was the third guy in my list. Feel free to throw names if you know this guy…

Well if you want to use the term “stunt guy”, that is what I meant I guess. Considering Prowse had done zero dialogue in final films, his role was not much different. In the end they all did just body acting, except for Jones.

Sorry, I do not know who the person on the picture is.

Edit: ah, Z6PO answered that.

Is he actually wearing the Vader costume? Looks he stood behind the costume-on-a-hatrack and just sticked his arms through.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

IIRC, that shot is one of the blooper reels and it’s seen being shot in the original making of documentary.

Nice one, wasn’t sure if I’d seen it before - felt familiar but the old memory often plays tricks 😉

Seems a decent twitter page Dave Prowse has - seems to be posting up a fair few behind the scenes pics of late too 😃

I think there’s another angle where the cloak completely catches fire as well.

And Frink has to use that shot. 😉

It’s too bad they couldn’t get the timing of the pieces falling right. I’ve always thought that was such a neat shot and would’ve been really impressive on screen if they got the timing down.

One of those shots you’d think George would have wanted to “fix” for the SE.

There’s something that just feels wrong about Vader using his lightsaber to seemingly pick up the robe like that.

You could do it with a regular sword, why not a lasersword? They would be quite dangerous if they cut through anything without the slightest application of pressure!
