I was just wondering if there was an original subtitle file floating around (like the four that ADigitalMan posted for Balance of the Force) of MagnoliaFan's Clone Wars subtitles.

Thanks!

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side

So, I re-read some of the pages back and never found an answer to if there was a new version of TCW? I know he said he was going back in to edit some stuff, or clean up some SFX. I wonder if he had ever finished it.

From re-reading it, I stumbled upon the arguement about Saber colors. Someone was talking about Mace having a blue blade instead of purple. I've always felt that when a Jedi reached the level of master, his blade would be the green color that both Yoda and Luke had. A Sith Lord would of course have the Red blade and a Jedi Padawan or strictly a Jedi Knight would have the Blue Blade.

Also, does someone have a complete list of the changes to TCW?

But Obi-Wan was a master and Anakin was a knight(and a master in EpIII) and they both had Blue Blades

Well, then, maybe I don't understand the whole ranking thing...but doesn't Mace say in the preview that "We will allow you to be a part of this council, but you will not be granted the status of Master'? I don't want to get into spoilers, just remembered hearing that.

Also, I thought the Mace and Yoda were a class above Obi-Wan. Qui Gonn was a Jedi Master, but not a member of the council.

But Anakin is made a master, reluctantly, in Ep III and Kenobi has been a master for quite a while by then.

I see where you are coming from though, and it is an intriguing POV.

I don't know if you are into the EU or not but Mace Windu is supposedly the master of a lightsaber form that he created called Vapaad. It is named after a many-tentacled and very dangerous creature, probably because of not only its lethalness but how close one must come to the dark side by using this form.

Maybe since he comes so close to the dark side, Mace uses a saber color that mixes both traditional Jedi colors and the colors of a Sith.

Crackpot theory and worthy of TF.net if I do say so myself.

I'm not sure if this has been questioned, but I was looking at my set, and on my 4:3 TV I can see two shades of black bars creating the widescreen aspect ratio. I just assumed it was done so to fit in the new subtitles, but has anyone else noticed this or to I have to fiddle with the TV's brightness/contrast again?

OK, seriously, I think everyone that has the Balance of the Force and The Clone Wars XviD's should start seeding. From MySpleen I'm only getting about 5 seeds for each and it's downloading at about 20 Kb/s.

I really want to see these and show them to my friends because like most people I expected something a little more from Lucas and these might be the answer. Granted I still really like the prequels I just want to see them in a more serious/different lite. ROTS looks to be more serious and that is how I like my SW movies.

So please, if you still have these (I know they've been around for quite some time) please start seeding them.

Talk to bwlag. He can get you DVD versions, which are IMO far superior to computer files.

JarHead413 (or anybody else, for that matter), just PM me. I know I don't post much, but I'm still here.

I wonder if MF will ever release these on dual layer as the video quality is good but obviously further compressed due to space issues. Plus, it's only Dolby 2.0.

* Scratch that, just found it was dolby 5.1. Maybe I'll refrain from asking about DL. Just got my ignorance handed to me in the preservation section.

casualimp - I'm looking forward to his v2 of The Clone War too m8, and if it's on dl dvd that'd be even better.

IIRC Rikter mentioned that MagnoliaFan is quite busy on another project at the moment, so I suppose we have to patiently await to see what he comes up with in his v2 release, and for his take on Episode 3 (prob some time after the dvd release?).

Ric, those are looking fantastic! I was looking into alternate art too as it seems to be a good thing lately. As for 3-D, have you been to Good Tutorials website yet?

I'm new to the Forum....I cannot wait to see these MagnoliaFan edits. I sent out a few PM's to MagnoliaFan, Rikter, bwlag asking for some help in obtaining copies. I'm pretty eager to see these and would be greatly appreciative if anyone out there can help me out...I'd totally be willing to pay some bucks (reasonable bucks that is) plus provide DVD blanks. I have always loved the original trilogy (until it got all special editionalized...the dance scene in Jabba's Palace in ROTJ being the worst by far...even worse the Han stepping on Jabba's tail, and yes...even worse than greedo shooting first...which is completely rediculous). I was so excited when Ep I came out until the lights went down and I saw the bad voice over dubbs of the viceroys...only to be followed by fart jokes, stale acting and plot points that detracted from the greater story. I agree that there are moments of really good cinema in the prequels, if there was just a filter for the bad parts. Please help me folks...help me to see the light....I need it. I have some laserdisc rips on DVD of the original (non-special edition) trilogy if anyone is interested in swapping for the "Balance of the Force" and "The Clone War" Magnolia fan edits. The laserdisc rips are as good as the laserdisc versions (not quite as good as DVD but as good as you can get today) but have menus and extras and all...pretty decent quality.

I have just finished an unforgettable first screening "Balance of the Force" and "The Clone War." I had to join the forum to share some thoughts.

First-- the edits ROCK!!!

See, I always enjoyed Phantom Menace, but had to consciously let the fart jokes and whacky characterizations slide. If I could let them go, the movie made me happy.

Now?

Now, the "whacky" characters are at least interesting and some have become genuinely cool; previously borderline scenes work beautifully (for example, the Pod Race is now a dramatic scene about young Skywalker using the force); the story flows easily and all the would-be cool moments (Padme revealing she's the queen, the star-fighter attack on the droid command ship) actually work! This movie is tense now. It works now. I don't have to let anything slide, it just works. Ha-Lay-Loo-Ya!

I didn't like "Attack of the Clones" for the simple reason that Anakin and Amidala's romance had not one moment of truth. When she heard him say "I killed the women and children" and didn't run away from this teenage psycho, I'd truly had it. They stopped even resembling characters and just said stuff to clue us in to what we were supposed to feel about them. The rest of the movie sagged along, limp and forced.

Now?

Now the romance has spark, covers the basic beats and mostly works. The movie flows so much smoother that I now cannot wait for "Revenge of the Sith" (and if that sucks, I can't wait for the Magnoliafan edit which, I have no doubt, will freakin' work!)

I remember when I saw the trailers for these movies. They worked. The trailers had the right feel and flare for what these movies should have been. In that sense, they were better than the movies.

Now, for the most part, the movies feel just as good. As good as they were supposed to.

THANK YOU Magnoliafan, where ever you are! (And thank you Rikter-- I'm burning copies and getting them out there as I type) And mostly, I suppose, thank you George Lucas for shooting and providing the material for these great Magnoliafan edits. I feel it's a great credit to Magnoliafan that these cuts feel like what the movies were supposed to be-- if only Lucas had brought Magfan in sooner!

Any board regulars who find themselves on my side of the pond (UK) are welcome to stop by for a beer and a screening.

Especially since I just got a new 7.1 Surround sound system!

I wish I could say "be right over," but...

Let me ask the board a question about how effective "Balance of the Force" is:

Were any of you converted from disliking Jar Jar into liking him?

I have to say I was. With an alien language, better dialogue, and a better story (involving the Gungan crystal)-- he seems like a real Star Wars character in the vein of creatures we saw in that cantina back in 1977. He isn't my all-time favorite, but he's far more interesting than Wicket the Ewok (whom I still can't say I like very much).

I hated MagFan's Jar Jar. He went from a clumsy bafoon to a common rude prick. But ADigitalMan's subtitles were a lot better for Jar Jar.

Honestly, I hated the addition of the Kaibur crystal story. I thought it was stupid and a lame attempt to tie the prequels to Splinter of the Mind's Eye. The original story was handled very poorly. It made the Gungans seem like stupid little half retarted kids on meth...

Bbut racial discrimination is more realistic than the Gungans having a magical Force-enhancing crystal.

I think you've missed the point, Chaltab. The Kyber crystal is not intended to be the same one from Splinter of the Mind's Eye; the name is just a homage to on of Lucas' original ideas. In BotF it only serves to flesh out the Gungan/Naboo animosity, Jar-Jar's banishment, and explain what the deal was with the crystal ball at the end celebration.

And I like MagnoliaFan's Jar-Jar over ADigitalMan's; he gives kind of a Han Solo vibe. But there are some things a prefered in ADM's subtitles, such as the Viceroy not recognizing Padme.

I didn't like MagFan's Jar Jar either tbh...felt it went a little too far. A lot of the rest of the edit is very good though. Where can you get these other subtitles and how can you use them?
