Episode I-VI: Archival Editions

Author
Time
Apparently the May 2007 release of the "full" or "ultimate" editions have been referred to by the Luca$ camp as the "archival editions", not "ultimate editions". They will be released in High Definition marking the 30th Anniversary of the Original. I have read of many changes. Han will shoot first, but the original actor playing darth/anakin unmasked will be changed as will his ghost in VI. What's more in the filming of Ep III there are scenes being done for Portman that will have her edited in for ROTJ. He keep's tinkering...according to rumors this is a list of changes. Not all of them will make it and this is again according to rumors from trukstop.com...

CHANGES TO THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY
Episode IV: A New Hope
01. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader's first appearance on Princess Leia's ship.
02. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
03. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.
04. There's a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.
05. In the Cantina, the Duros(green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.
06. The bleeding arm on the floor in the Cantina has been replaced with a non-bleeding arm because it's now canon that lightsabers cauterize wounds.
07. The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored.
08. Jabba the Hutt has been given a makeover and Han no longer steps on his tail.
09. In place of R2 wobbling down the stairs to the Falcon's hangar, a CG R2 navigating the stairs like he does in Attack of the Clones was added.
10. The white boxes around space ships have been removed and new CG shots have been added.
11. The scene of the Falcon being chased by the two Star Destroyers was modified. The Falcon now does spinning moves, avoiding the Star Destroyers' fire.
12. When the Death Star destroys Alderaan there's a new scene of Yoda's reaction to the disturbance in the Force that is created by all those deaths and then it cuts to Obi-Wan reacting to it as well.
13. The Dianoga has gotten a CG makeover and were are now able to see more of the creature.
14. The Death Star's paneling and computers have been slightly altered to show similar displays to those in the prequels.
15. The words "Tractor Beam" with Aurebesh lettering.
16. More stormtroopers have been added to the Death Star.
17. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for use with all the stormtroopers.
18. The Obi-Wan/Vader duel has been spruced up. It is much more epic and there is much more movement. A modified version of Duel of the Fates is being considered for the scene.
19. The Death Star plans that are taken from R2 have been updated. When the Rebels are reviewing the Death Star plans they look similar to the plans we see in Attack of the Clones.
20. The Death Star battle is much more epic with more Tie Fighters and more Rebels being blown to bits. We get to see old Naboo starfighters being used by the Rebels.
21. There's a new scene(shot during Episode III) where Darth Vader goes to Coruscant and lands his ship in the same building Count Dooku does at the end of Attack of the Clones. Except now the building is all fixed up and it is now Palpatine's palace. He meets with Palpatine to ask for forgiveness for his failure and inform him of a new potential who is strong in the Force.
22. Chewbacca now gets a medal.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
01. The taun-tauns are now CG.
02. The battle of Hoth is much more epic. We see the Imperial ships land on Hoth and release AT-ATs. The AT-ATs have been sped up a bit. There's a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers featuring new ships and vehicles.
03. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
04. The white boxes around space ships have been removed.
05. The slug monster is CG.
06. Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor. The conversations between Vader and Palpatine is now longer and features a few connections to the prequels.
07. Yoda's face is now animated in CG allowing more _expression of emotions yet his movements remain the same. Also two deleted scenes featuring Yoda instructing Luke have been restored.
08. A new scene was shot in which the stormtroopers, after they capture Han, Leia and Chewie, bring Vader the box containing C-3PO in pieces. Vader orders the stormtroopers to bring the broken droid to Chewbacca's cell so that he can fix him.
09. The lightsaber effects have been redone in certain parts.
10. Luke's fall from Cloud City has been reshot against bluescreen using a stuntman.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
01. Jabba the Hutt is now a combination of the puppet and CG.
02. The Rancor is CG and looks disgusting as ever.
03. Yoda is CG. Yoda disappears leaving his clothes behind like Obi-Wan now.
04. The ewoks are now mostly CG and there are a lot more of them.
05. The plan is to insert the love theme Across the Stars when Luke is talking with Leia about their mother.
06. Temuera Morrison's like before is now the voice for Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
07. In the battle of Endor there are thousands of Ewoks and they are more vicious than there midgets-in-suits counterparts. More bite the dust now.
08. White boxes around ships removed.
09. The black blotches around Palpatine's face are gone.
10. Some of the lightsaber effects have been redone. The shadows that the lightsabers made on the floor are gone.
11. During Anakin's death scene it starts with a sad rendition of the Imperial March and slowly evolves into Anakin's Theme.
12. Sebastion Shaw who played Anakin when he was unmasked has been replaced with Hayden Christenson in make-up to make him look older. Anakin has much more dialogue. He apologizes for the destruction he caused, he thanks his son for turning him back to the light, he tells his son to rebuild the Jedi and he says he loves him and his sister. Just before he dies he says, "It is finished...".
13. We see more planets celebrating at the end of the movie. We see an aged Jar Jar, who is now the leader of the Gungans, on Naboo celebrating with the people of Naboo and the Gungans. We see an old Watto, who is now unable to fly, sitting in a hover chair cheering on Tatooine. During these scenes Across the Stars plays transitioning to the victory celebration music at the Ewok tree village.
14. Anakin's spirit is now played by Hayden Christenson with make-up to make him look his age. He looks on proudly at his son Luke with the spirit of Padme by his side.

and these are rumours for...

Episode I: The Phantom Menace

01. The cut scene of Obi-Wan emerging, Apocolypse Now style, from the swamp after hiding from droids has been restored. He tries to navigate the forest without being noticed when a battle droid spots him. Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber cutting the droid in two. Then two STAPs spot him and as he raises his lightsaber to deflect the attacks it shorts out forcing him to flee. Qui-Gon takes care of them and then scolds Obi-Wan for leaving his lightsaber power on and forgetting to recharge it.

02. A new scene was shot with extras during Episode III showing the people of Naboo in concentration camps.

03. The cut scene of Qui-Gon discovering the probe droid has been restored and a second CG probe droid has been added in the background to witness the attack and report it to Darth Maul.

04. A version of Across the Stars has been added to the scene between Anakin and Padme on the Naboo ship.

05. Yoda is CG.

06. Jimmy Smits shot a new Senate scene as Bail Organa during the filming of Episode III.

07. There's a new scene featuring Count Dooku talking to Qui-Gon via hologram.

08. Count Dooku now shows up at Qui-Gon's funeral. Chris Lee shot the new scene against bluescreen. He walks up to Yoda and Mace and says, "This is the final straw!" and starts to walk away. Yoda follows him and tries to talk some sense into him. Dooku then tells Yoda he will no longer serve a corrupt Senate and that he is quiting the Jedi Order. Yoda goes back to the funeral. Then he says his line, "Always two there are. No more, no less. A master and an apprentice."

Episode II: Attack of the Clones

01. The Senate cut scene has been added to the beginning of the movie.

02. The cut scene in which Padme witnesses Anakin having a nightmare about his mother aboard the refugee cruiser has been added.

I hate to say it, but this list has been floating around for a long time now. Most of it is pure rumor.

Actually all of these are brand new and not floating around a long time, it mentions new shots from Episode III's filming.

The prequel changes list I just saw for the first time today, but the list of changes to the original trilogy is very old. It's been around for months now, pretty much since the DVD announcement.
Author

Ok, months, I think it said May where I found it. I thought it was being alluded to that this was years old and myth. I have found many of the things listed here, listed many other places in bits and pieces and leads me to believe that this in fact, while not in stone, has a decent amount of merit to it.

Interesting that while it may be a valid list or not, few people would would deny that Lucas would consider even more changes to a newer version/edit of Star Wars...

So because its posted online it has to be true right? I read most of these and while I like to think some of them are really cool and would add greater consistency to the movies as a saga, I believe most of it is fan boy speculation. I don't believe George has decided on what will eventually be included on the 'archival' editions in 2007. He can never make up his mind so don't take this list as anything but rumours in my opinion. I mean come on, Anakin "apologises" for all the things he did wrong and says "it is done"? Please......if this list came from Starwars.com, then I could believe it.

That list is complete BS. It's just a wish-list created by some misguided fan-boy. It started making the rounds last October.

People really need to stop believing everything they see on the internet. As of yet, there are no such thing as 'archival' or 'ultimate' editions. It's all merely fan-boy rumor, speculation and assumption that LFL will release a box set containing all six films sometime after episode III, and that those films will be changed yet again. While I do think an eventual box set is likely, to assume that the films contained within will be altered yet again is premature. Personally, I don't believe the films will be altered in any way beyond the September release.

Well said Spicoli, I agree with everything you said. Personally I'm holding out until all 6 are re-released as a box set and if they tinker with that version yet again and I hate THAT version, I'm sure there will be plenty of the Sept release 4 disc sets for sale on e-bay!

OK, some of it may be wishes, but again I have seen much information to back many of these. In episode three they have gone back to films scenes to put in the original trilogy and that I read at dark horizons and aintitcool. Scenes with Padme, hayden, using Boba's voice, etc. There was an older list that is slightly different that is from october, this is update with rumors, but substantiated ones. Luca$ himself talked to MTV about going back and filming those new scenes and it was only a couple of months ago...so please...relax..everyone...this is interesting to look at. That's it. RELAX. Damn.

Wrong. That is the exact same list. Word for word. And it's fake. And quite frankly, much of it is insulting to any fan of the original trilogy.

Please this information is supposed to be entertaining not inspire hate. Some people are so awesome on this site and some truly just want to argue for no apparent reason. It's tiring and wastes thread space. I hate scrolling through threads where people go back and forth with stupid banter. I found it, it was interesting and some people liked it, that's good enough. I never deceived anyone or didn't label these as rumors. So don't badger me or those posting here. If you have something constructive to write or show us please do so. I don't want to go in circles and again this alludes to the reshoots that have been confirmed. This is from trukstop.com...

Mike_Droideka, over at the Nightly.Net Message Board, recently gave us the heads up to an interesting post made over at 501st Garrison Website, which originally came from the John Byrne message boards. The post, as detailed below, lists all the changes and alterations to the Original Trilogy for the Archival Edition in 2007.

Now, before you all read on, be aware that none of this is official confirmation. At best, it is rumor, so it's really up to you to digest and think about and make up your own mind. Now, while a majority of people may think the list is nothing more than a fictional fan-boy's wet dream, a few people have informed me that John Byrne has been reliable in the past with regard to Star Wars spoilers... so, you never know.

John Byrne's Official Web Site

....OK so, no more on this... I give up, I didn't post it to get attacked or to argue, I thought some people may find it interesting. By the way, nowhere on here did I say all this is true. Why do people get so angry and want to argue so bad. Take it out on your wife, girlfriend or kids and let cooler, more intelligent heads prevail here.

Finally I had an email about this list with magnoliafan and he had this to say

"Some of this is actually just rumor and speculation...
A lot more of it, you'll be seeing sooner than you think... (Sept 21)"

As I said many times, as the trukstop site says, as he says...it is rumor and speculation, but some of it has credibility, not all of it, but some and that makes it interesting to decide what we may actually see in the 2004 or 2007 release and what we may not.

Done.

I just get tired of seeing so much false information being passed on as fact. It's all internet rumor and gossip and not everyone is going to like it or believe it. If you're going to post crap like this you are going to have to expect some arguments and rebuttals.

I posted the old list months ago on this site. There are slight changes to the list.
Ifd it's true so be it. I mean, they are changing the OT so much now, I could'd care less anymore.
It'll be intersting to see what Lucas has done, but man, now more so than ever before, I just want the old movies back.
I'll buy the DVD when it comes out, only because I hate the VHS versions (I have all of em, but it's just so shit next to DVDs) and want superior sound and pictures.

We'll all found out in 2 months - to the day!!

^ 2 months to the day! Cool - though I'm still undecided as whether to actually buy them or, ahem... cough, borrow someone else's back-up copy.

Why all the hostility to Obi-Wonton? He posts a list of rumoured changes for us all to see and gets hassle for it?! C'mon lads, surely we're better than that?

Wonton, don't bail on us because some people were bashing you. Some people can just be arrogant. Don't forget that there are some other people who will have your back all the way. I've gotten my fair share of bashing in the year and a half that I've been posting here as well. I'm still here. Which is kinda obvious from my post count.

Stick around man. You're welcomed by more than you may realize.

Thanks Bossk. It truly means a lot that you, luke, jason, and rikter have all backed me with some good posts. Thanks again. I do just want to post things I find exciting or interesting. If it interests me I think maybe someone else will like it. To haters and ranters, why, why do you do it. If I didn't post something to be imflammatory, negative or critical...why respond that way? Think about my post. If it is not of interest fine. Appreciate that I took the time to give you all something that you may find interesting and I took the time to do it. Focusing negative energy on people who try and build the board in a credible way is not healthy for the board or yourself if your doing it. To qoute Jack Nicholson as Col. Nathan Jessup in A Few Good Men, "...it'd be better if you just said, "thanks," and went on your way." Now of course someone will needlessly correct a word or two out of that line further substantiating my post in the first place.

Hi Sean,

How am I making things worse? I would like to know.

For a website devoted to the preservation of the original trilogy, there sure seems to be a lot of people here who don't care if the films keep getting changed. I, for one, don't want these films to be altered. I am very passionate in my belief that the original films should be preserved. Quite frankly, lists like this are infuriating to me. Why should I not speak out about that? I am quite unhappy about the fact that only the Special Edition fans and the indifferent fans are the ones who are getting an official DVD release, while fans who grew up with these films and love these films in all of their original glory are being snubbed. These films were good enough to make Lucas rich over the first 20 years, and the fans who put Lucas where he is deserve better than this.
