I’m an atheist and I’ll leave it at that.

Good for you. I’m not. Good for me. Nobody is complaining about the guy being an atheist. Being an atheist is okay. We’re complaining about being an asshole about it. The kind of atheism that condescends and laughs at any other viewpoint and judges not being an atheist as being of less intelligence. And there are plenty like that, just as there are many who believe in god that condemn those that don’t. You can’t concretely prove either way so there’s no reason to be snobby about your beliefs.

So yeah as long as you aren’t an asshole about it nobody will mind.

Oh I’m an asshole, my post history on here kind of confirms that and more on blu-ray.com, but I’d rather argue about movies, music, video games, books, food, and history. Never politics or religion in person or online and I stay out of those threads, even when I troll on 4Chan. Would rather get recommendations for what I’d rather discuss.
In fact, hardly anyone knows I’m an atheist because I don’t even consider it worthwhile to bring up in conversation and I completely avoid it.

Just remembered I have a lot of H.P. Lovecraft on my phone. Might be redos or compilations. Even have all of Charles Dickens, John Le Carre, and Alexandre Dumas too. All those epubs. No idea what I have in storage, should check again soon.

STAR TREK: PLANET OF JUDGMENT: JOE HALDEMAN

The first couple chapters are quite interest-piquing, but the novel quickly plateaus thereafter. Not a bad novel by any means – it would’ve made an above-average episode – but there’s little payoff for the initial mystique.

6/10

FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID: PHILIP K. DICK

PROS

  • It’s the Twilight Zone episode “Person or Persons Unknown” crossed with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
  • It’s a quick read.

CONS

  • The main protagonist is a materialistic, hedonistic douchebag.
  • The supporting characters aren’t any better.

My final analysis: There’re better PKD books out there. Unless you’re a diehard PKD fan, skip this one.

7/10

Do you use Calibre to store your ebooks?

I use Calibre, Dropbox, and Calibre-go for Android to store my entire ebook library and share it to my mobile devices.

Use my external hard drive and Mega to store ebooks (epubs) they don’t take up much space unlike PDF. To read them on my Android I use Universal Book Reader Pro. Some books are fine at 7 pt but some of the layout gets weird. Have all The Witcher books too and this huge all in one for all 7 Harry Potter books. Never read the latter when I was a teenager/adult as they released. Figured a compilation would be fine but at well over 2000 pages, it’d gonna take awhile.
Also have J.R.R. Tolkien, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Raymond Chandler, Joseph Conrad, Dashiell Hammett, Stephen King (obviously), Patrick O’Brian (Aubrey/Maturin series), George Orwell, Chuck Palahniuk, Star Wars, and just many others. Even books I’ve been meaning to reread after a couple decades of not.

At less than 90 pages, I expected Candide by Voltaire to be a quick read. Having read about 20 pages, I don’t think I’m in the right mindset to read this right now. It’s good, but I am struggling to really get into it.

I can’t tell if that’s a serious question. E-Readers usually have multiple selectable fonts.

it wasn’t?

I also don’t understand why you would buy the physical book, but not read it. Reading a physical book is usually faster (according to the random research i have seen, google it yourself). Maybe if RayRogers was reading the book he would be done by now :p

That is intended to be good natured ribbing by the way.

Usually on the bus getting to work and also campus. Even bought the book well over 20 years ago, it’s in storage, and that’s just too much shit to lug around all day, everyday.

Also reading: Who Gives a Flying Fuck? by Handy Wankstein III.

I suppose those are fair reasons. I am just old / old school enough that I would lug the book around. [Shrug]

So would you then prefer to just not use an ebook reader in general, dahmage?

I admit there is something… tangible to a physical book that inherently feels superior to digital.

I don’t read too many books anymore so I tend to go digital because it’s in a situation (travel, mainly) where I prioritize convenience over tangibility. Reading digital doesn’t bother me like it does some people.

I just can’t stand using a digital device for reading. I think it comes down to two things:

  1. I rely on the physical space of a book, being able to know where i am on a page, etc. and that doesn’t translate over to a digital device with scrolling.

  2. current screen tech is just not as relaxing on the eyes. i have hope for e-ink type displays, but the tech still isnt’ there. I don’t know how much of a conditioned thing this, vs real. but it still is an issue for me.

Reading digital doesn’t bother me either, but I think the shine has worn off for me on the Kindle craze. I used to be all about digital because it’s so convenient, but lately I’ve been really indifferent to it as both have their advantages.

No. That attitude towards fellow members isn’t on - and you’ve been warned about your attitude before.

Enjoy some time off from the site - I hope you use it wisely and improve on the attitude - as you are a decent poster without it…

It would seem I missed the ‘joke’ of this - it may well not have been an insult - and I have misinterpreted the last line of the post above.

My apologies to RayRogers - who is as of right now - unbanned.

Oh! That was actually a dig. I thought, when he said that, he was referring to The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson.

Which is actually a thing.

Okay then.

I still don’t really see it as a dig. Weird and rude sarcasm, but I don’t really think he was trying to hurt.

I didn’t even think it was that rude if it was a dig. It’s certainly not over the line as far as Off Topic goes IMO.

Jason, I think you’re trying too hard to over-police Off Topic without entirely understanding the culture of this corner of the forum. This isn’t the first mod action you’ve taken here that indicates this to me, but it’s IMO the least defendable one so far.

Most readers (I think) have the ability to view either scrolling or page turning (I always go with the latter for the reasons you mention).

Like Frink, ebooks are a convenience thing for me. I prefer reading physical, but when I can just put my book on my phone (something that fits in my pocket and already I take everywhere anyway), it’s makes it a lot easier to find time to read.
