I know! lets reboot Voyager and this time cast a male as the Captain(changing the first name of course). That would be acceptable right? No one would complain. Feminists would have no problem right?

Would it bother you if it were a black doctor? After all, all the doctors have been white for 50 years.

Calm down.
Even if this turns out to be a bad idea, you have 25 years of classic Who, and a decade’s worth of the current show to fall back on.
Where were you in '77?
I think the bigger issue you all seem to be missing here is that The Doctor will be regenerating at all!
It was clearly established in the first serial that he was just some old dude that lived in a scrapyard. Non-canonical elements like him being a Timelord and being able to regenerate, were only introduced to explain away the change of actor after 5-years. The canon should be respected and all episodes after Hartnell should be erased (something the BBC tried hard to do back in the day!).
VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.
You really should see Ryan Johnson’s doctor. I know it’s not “canon”, but the woman who played the doctor was quite good, it wasn’t a joke, and it was 30 years ago. There were 4 episodes, the 4th one being the best.
Ryan has a website that can be found with a modest bit of googling.

What I don’t understand is why they didn’t go all the way PC and choose a black female gay actor to play the part.
believe it or not, I don’t think racial switch would bother me so much. But would still bother me, after over 20 regenerations of various characters seen in both new and old Who, that not once did race change.

If I am not mistaken the very first episode makes clear that the Doctor and Susan are not human. No, regeneration was never explained until 3 years later, but I don’t see how regeneration violates the cannon.

Things change.
One of the reasons I have no problem with it, is that the nature of the doctor’s character has nothing to do with gender. There has never been any machismo, nor sex-appeal… unlike characters such as James Bond or Superman.
And companions have been of both genders.

ok, I’m not going to talk to you about this anymore cause you just don’t want to get it and you don’t want to listen. Please go on considering me the sexist pig you know me to be.

I am intrigued - will certainly give it a go.
On a separate note I don’t get all the selective cherry-picking of past episodes to try and discredit the notion that a Gallifreyan can’t change sexes - we’re told, and have been shown, that they can change colour, age, personality, character, memory, and sex - so it’s hardly a big surprise…
and just because it hasn’t been mentioned in the earlier Who content doesn’t mean it’s any less correct.
The Doctor will be a woman - big deal.
I just hope Jodie Whittaker gets some decent stories and lines - she’s a talented and interesting actress - and that the series does well.

Geez, you totally miss the point. I’m not saying it’s canon (one N, btw), I’m saying that with good story and acting it has been shown that a female doctor can work fine.

The first episode is weak (except for the initial regeneration scene which is great). Episodes 2, 3, and 4 are better. By the 4th episode they’re looking quite professional.
I just hope Jodie Whittaker gets some decent stories and lines
Yep, THAT is what will determine it’s success or failure.

Over 20 regenerations of various characters in old and new Who before Missy, not once was there a gender change not once.

perhaps, but if Timelords can change gender, the lack of any mention of this(and the lack of it actually happening) for over 50 years, is quite glaring.

Just like it would be no big dead if Romana or Rani changed into a man. Right.

The point is, someone tried to argue that there was a female Doctor before. Since this wasn’t cannon, it doesn’t count and therefore there has not in fact been a female Doctor until today.

I actually would be open to giving it a go if they had cast say, Hayley Atwell. But instead he went with the one actress I was actively dreading the most. Her character on Broadchurch is easily the worst of the entire ensemble. I just don’t see it working. But we’ll see.

It wouldn’t be a big deal if Romana (Fred) or Rani regenerated into a man - as previously said. Why would it?

Yeah. Her character on Broadchurch was frustrating. Her acting was great. Same with Black Mirror.
Great casting decision, great tears from the predictables!
