F8 certainly doesn’t deserve the record but at least it’s a good movie.

Good ? Well, if you think so… TFOTF (aka FF8) is so dumb it gets unwatchable (the opening scene is fun though). Even Theron is a very terrible vilain (who wrote her endless stupid monologues ?). The rip off of Hard Boiled was quite confusing as well. Fast Five is way better and still is the best of the series. At least FF8 is not as arrogant as FF6.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got criticized for being ridiculously over the top, self-aware, and cartoonish at times.

Why do you think F&F gets away with it when other movies don’t?

I’m not saying it’s the best one. I don’t know how anyone in their right mind could call it unwatchable because if it’s anything it’s watchable. It’s dumb yes but very aware of that fact. Theron is pretty silly but she plays it up well (even if her character doesn’t really go anywhere).

Because those weren’t the reasons why KOTCS didn’t work?

What I’ll say in respect to the topic is that bad movies can make a lot of money but they don’t have the same staying power as good movies. That’s why TFA grossed more than TPM even when adjusted for inflation.

So I’ll just point out that if you look at the F&F’s films’ box office record, there’s a clear trend there that closely relates to the uptick in quality in the films. If you choose to write off a specific kind of movie just because you think it’s beneath you, that’s your prerogative (I personally can enjoy any type of movie, so long as it’s well made).

But I do wish TFA still had that record…

I’m sure Disney accountants are wiping their tears with all the money Rogue One made. 😉

Yup.

To bring this conversation full circle, Vin Diesel himself showed up before my screening of F8 and talked about how the F&F franchise is the most successful of all time. Yeah, no…

God, China has trash taste in movies. F+F movies are the domain of idiot frat boys and rednecks.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I’m not questioning your humanity, unless your alluding to being a sophisticated AI. I find those movies garbage. The people I know who love them tended to be the jerks who called me a fag me in high school.

By humanity I mean human decency. I’d rather not be lumped into that group.

Only the first 3 or 4 were race car gearhead bro movies. They might have retained that audience but the newer ones fit more comfortably in the superhero/action/spy genres.

And here we are getting off topic again but I do not appreciate the insult and feel the need to defend myself. Movies can have a wide audience. The box office wouldn’t be so high if it didn’t.

You think everyone who watches Star Wars movies lives in their parents basements?

Over $1b at the cinema, with dvd/bluray/digitaldownloads/3d sales, merchandising & licensing, sponsorships, film streaming %'s, tv movie channel sales, book tie-ins etc - the future is looking good for the Star Wars Standalone Stories (and Star Wars in general) at the moment 😃

That’s an interesting tidbit about the R1 3D sales. I thought the 3D was pretty weak, but I only saw it that way once, and was a bit under the weather.

RO did poorly in China this weekend and its overseas BO receipts have been below expectation. Obviously it did quite well in the U.S.

TFA set an opening weekend record in China last year, but BO collapsed there in Week 2.

Looks like the Disney movies are fleecing people out of nostalgia dollars, while at least in China where the people in general have no connection to the OT, the reception has not been good.

Yes, the Chinese are much more discerning; they love great films like the Fast and the Furious (pick a number) and Warcraft.

In any case Domestic revenue is worth quite a bit more to studios than much of the international take. As an example… it’s estimated that studies get about 50% of the box office revenue in the US, but only 25% in China. That’s largely why Rogue One made something like $100 million more in profit compared to Captain America Civil War.

For whatever reason SW films are by far the most popular franchise in the Anglosphere, but not outside of it.

Star Wars was a worldwide success back in the day. So much so, it was still playing in some countries as ESB was being made, and an international re-release strategy was being planned.

Well - the original Star Wars is a fairly unique event in cinema and modern pop culture history. It totally caught lightning in a bottle. I’m not even sure there are any other modern films you can compare it to… something like the Beatles might be a better comparison

I think the international market has radically changed since that time as well. It’s certainly vastly larger relative to the domestic market. I don’t think a lot of US films were being shown in China in the 70s and early 80s 😃

China was definitely not part of the equation back then. Only the huge potential audience there has made Hollywood seemingly overcome it’s scorn of what has long been a paradise for video piracy.

If Star Wars were made today, the Empire would probably win. China isn’t exactly comfortable bankrolling films that involve rebellions against the state.

Since when is China bankrolling Lucasfilm productions?

China is the big money now in Hollywood. If Star Wars didn’t exist in 2017, and some young filmmakers wanted to make it, it wouldn’t get made. Or the Empire would win.

Show me a project or script that didn’t get made because China didn’t like it.
