Billy Graham

I was raised to believe this man was the true epitome of Christianity. The Nixon tapes beg to differ.

I didn’t know he was on the Nixon tapes.

edit: Just looked it up. Apparently, he said disparaging things about Jewish people.

Apparently Graham understood how you feel (from an article in a magazine Graham started):

When Watergate came to light, [Graham] was blindsided. He had held Nixon in such high regard for so many years that it was difficult for him to reconcile the character of the man he knew with that of the man heard on the tapes.

“Never, in all the times I was with him, did he use language even close to that,” wrote Graham. “I felt physically sick and went into the seclusion of my study at the back of the house. Inwardly, I felt torn apart.”

“There was a side of Nixon that my father had never seen, and that concerned him,” Franklin Graham explained. “He wondered if he had gotten too close to Nixon, and maybe stepped out of a role he should have really stayed in.”

The President had not confided in him about his mounting troubles. After the full story broke, he all but blocked the evangelist’s access to him during the rest of his presidency.

“I wanted to believe the best about him for as long as I could,” Billy Graham wrote. “When the worst came out, it was nearly unbearable for me.”

I want to be clear, I am actually being sarcastic because it annoys me when good people like Billy Graham get condemned for human mistakes. When Al Franken dies, non-religious peeps and liberals will be sad in spite of his hypocrisy. But they seem to celebrate the death of a prominent Christian figure who has spent most of his life being a wonderful human because of that “human” part. It is unfortunate what Billy Graham said, but everyone makes stupid mistakes and does stupid things. He was a product of a different time.

Many liberals and atheists and agnostics celebrate the failures of Christians instead of celebrating the goodness of a different kind of human. To me, that is one of the greatest hypocrisies on their part.

I wondered, it didn’t sound like the kind of thing you would mean.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be judged based on the mistakes I’ve made.

Ask Doc Brown.

Obviously, this is not universal, but there will be many. At least one earlier post on the topic seems indicative of that.

It’s alright, and I know how his views would be personally offensive to you. Just so you’re aware, until 2012, he listed Mormons as cultists, which was pretty offensive to me as well. Perhaps, not to the same degree, but it’s still very offensive. Nevertheless, in spite of our disagreements, I feel he was a genuinely good person and that we needn’t point out his flaws upon his death. Most of the people in this thread have done some questionable things, yet we don’t dance on their graves. It’s all part of being human.

When all is said and done, Graham was human, with all the glory and imperfection that entails. Perhaps he held antisemetic sentiments at some point in his life, but it doesn’t mean he held them all his life. Even if he had, he wasn’t a foaming-at-the-mouth neo-Nazi preaching intolerance and hatred.

Ender said everything I tried to say already, and better.

There’s no excuse for any of our mistakes, but we make them, and yet, they don’t usually make up the sum total of what makes us a good or bad person.

No one’s perfect. Everyone is host to unbecoming intolerance, whether we’re aware of it or not, whether we admit to it or not. You want to condemn Graham for his private thoughts? Then you’re gonna have to condemn me. You’re gonna have to condemn all your loved ones. You’re gonna have to condemn yourself as well.

My post was not meant to be referring specifically to Graham.

Will I be sad when Al Franken dies? No. (I don’t know who he is - I’ll wiki him later, is he Billy Graham’s left-leaning mate?)

Anyway, nice switch-deflection there in your post onto the ‘opposition’ as you see it - seems ALL you religious/right types do that, no? (where is that sarcasm winky-face to insert here?)

I don’t think many people will be, or seem to be, ‘celebrating’ Billy Graham’s death at all.

Nor do many atheists and agnostics celebrate the failures (or failings) of Christians or Christianity as a whole - nor celebrate the failures of many other religions either - yet I think we both know that anyway.

Anyway, RIP Billy Graham.

I clearly chose the word many deliberately, though I failed to use it earlier. Many does not mean all, or even a majority. It simply means, “a large amount,” and that was my intent. I do not believe all or most will do so, but there will be a large amount of people who take this opportunity to harshly criticize Billy Graham rather than praise or even simply honor him.

While my evidence is anecdotal, I’ve seen numerous places online, even this site, where the non-believers and liberals in the crowd have admitted to delighting in the hypocrisies on the Right or religious side. It happened in my own Interrogate the Mormon thread when our previous leader passed away recently. And I’ve seen extensive evidence online, and even a little in this thread, where criticism rather than praise or honor or even silence is given to a man who has just passed because of his human faults.

I am aware of how and why you used ‘many’ mate - and where you maybe also could’ve used it beforehand 😉

Though perhaps a deflection onto the ‘non-many’ non-religious peeps and liberals celebrating the death of a prominent Christian figure was a bit off. And likely does your latter valid point many favours.

There’ll likely be many non-religious peeps and liberals sad that someone important to many, many people out there they know, like and love are mourning Billy Graham… or for the man himself… or maybe even some Christian liberals and people of other faiths too.

I genuinely apologize for the ommission in my statement, but the ultimate purpose of my post still stands: if anyone here didn’t care much for Billy Graham, please keep disrespectful or rude comments to yourself, and discuss it in a better thread.

I do appreciate the correction.

That’s not an excuse.

He was also 100 years old. I know to a lot of people that’s not an excuse, but ancient and archaic people tend to tacitly hold some archaic views. It’s a fact of life. Abe Lincoln was a racist by today’s standards.
