Old Star Wars Games on New Computer Systems (was: Tie Fighter Collectors' CD-ROM Works in DOSBox)
Time

RRS-1980 said:

Not that long time ago I had the pleasure to play "Attack on the Death Star" on an emulator. It's a very old game released on Japanese computers, not even Wikipedia has an entry, so I added one here:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-attack-on-the-death-star

The early vector graphics look exactly like the special effects from the movie! Just compare the pre-Death Star run briefing.

BTW, this website lists over a hundred of Star Wars games, dating back to 1982: http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/star-wars-universe

I remember finding that game about 10 years ago when I was heavily involved with the now defunct "The Emulator Strikes Back" website but the emulator for it back then was nearly impossible to get working. It sounds like it may be worth re-visit...

Does anyone have any tips on getting Rogue Squadron to work on Windows 7? I have found fixes for V1.3 but my copies are V1.0 and V1.01.

Alternatively, can anyone offer what to look for in buying the V1.3 version?

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

Yes we know, but just about every other sound project (Mono restoration, 77 analogue stereo, Hairy Hen's 70mm recreation, 85 stereo remix) have all been synced to the GOUT.

Which gives you many, many options..

Info: 1992 VHS Set - Star Wars Trilogy Special Letterbox Collector's Edition - any special and/or redeeming qualities?

Good point(s). I may pick up the 1995 THX (Faces) Widescreen and P/S releases as well.

Seeing as you mentioned it, below is something I threw together 6 or 7 years ago (Yes, I am a file hoarder!!) regarding the US NTSC tapes which may be of use. The information mostly came from the now defunct DavisDVD site so trust the information as you see fit.

My assumptions came following my work on the PAL VHS releases.......

Star Wars

1  1982 Rental Fullscreen

2  1982 Fox Video Fullscreen

3  1983 CBS Fox Fullscreen

4  1984 CBS Fox Fullscreen

5  1985 CBS Fox Fullscreen with 1985 remix audio

6  1986 CBS Fox Fullscreen + Trilogy commercial

7  1987 CBS Fox Fullscreen + Tenth Anniversary commercial

8  1990 CBS Fox Fullscreen with new package design

9  1992 CBS Fox Widescreen "Special Collector's Edition" with new package design

10  1995 Fox Video THX Fullscreen "Faces"

11  1995 Fox Video THX Widescreen "Faces"

I think this works out to 5 unique releases. 1-4, 5-8, 9, 10 and 11

Empire Strikes Back

1  1984 CBS Fox Fullscreen

2  1986 CBS Fox Fullscreen + Trilogy commercial

3  1987 CBS Fox Fullscreen + Tenth Anniversary commercial

4  1990 CBS Fox Fullscreen with new package design

5  1992 CBS Fox Widescreen "Special Collector's Edition" with new package design

6  1995 Fox Video THX Fullscreen "Faces"

7  1995 Fox Video THX Widescreen "Faces"

I think this works out to 4 unique releases. 1-4, 5, 6 and 7

Return of the Jedi

1  1986 CBS Fox Fullscreen + Trilogy commercial

2  1987 CBS Fox Fullscreen + Tenth Anniversary commercial

3  1990 CBS Fox Fullscreen with new package design

4  1992 CBS Fox Widescreen "Special Collector's Edition" with new package design

5  1995 Fox Video THX Fullscreen "Faces"

6  1995 Fox Video THX Widescreen "Faces"

I think this works out to 4 unique releases. 1-3, 4, 5 and 6

A summary of GOUT synced Video, Audio and Subtitle sources - WORK IN PROGRESS
Time

That was pretty much where I was as I was trying to remember what was available to go with what. In truth, what I wrote down was double what I thought there was. It was then that I decided to start this thread.

Post 1 has been updated with the Project Threepio subtitles, the CatBus sync's of the Darth Mallwalker "rips" and the Darth Mallwalker scripts.

Have I missed anything???

Update - hairy_hen audio mixes added but only accurate to the best of my knowledge.

I was thinking about going down the same line for completeness....

In that case, the following releases scripts are to be added to Post 1:-

Mallwalker Ep4 DJ Standard Play

Mallwalker Ep4 Dark Sega

Mallwalker Ep5 Dark Sega

Mallwalker Ep6 Dark Sega

and

Mallwalker Ep4 X9

Mallwalker Ep5 X9

Mallwalker Ep6 X9

Also to be added are the subtitles from Project Threepio

Those screenshots look very good and show what could be achieved with a capture using top class equipment.

I have amended my comments in Post 4 re pre-THX and THX Widescreen releases. It looked right when I wrote it but was plainly confusing. Sorry about that!!

Thanks also for confirming the presence of the tractor beam line in the 92 release. Now, we no longer have to assume.....

Having got three PAL VHS ANH tapes from 87, 88 and 89 without the expected 1985 remix tractor beam line, anything could happen. Top this with the very recent 1991 Jap LD diGital SOUND with the same "original"  mix and again, no tractor beam line, we cannot assume anything.

Which all goes to back up my thoughts that once we have a particular release "in captivity" we will know for sure exactly what each release was the same as or different to. Phrases like "I assume" and "AFAIK" will become a thing of the past.

Once everything has been captured and logged here, people can then quote hard facts that you posted seven years ago which again justifies what I did.

The best recent example is the CED releases. We speculated for years but now we have proof.

Is this set worthy of a Panasonic AG-1980 capture? Does it have any special and/or redeeming qualities?

Following earlier comments, you will not be surprised to learn that I believe this is worth preserving even though it is no more special than any other VHS release

It is the first and only pre-THX Widescreen/Letterbox US NTSC VHS release (the other Widescreen VHS release is the THX Faces set which is also worthy of a transfer). ***Edited after comment in Post 9***

It is "assumed" to have the 1985 remix soundtrack for ANH so include the tractor beam line. The truth is, we do not know for sure until someone tells us.

What I found with my PAL VHS transfers is that I did not find the reason to do the transfers until I had actually done them!!

I found one set that was a different film length for each film, different colourings, different pan and scan shots and different intros of the FOX logo or the logo missing completely and no fanfare

Once I had the setup to do what I wanted - however limited - I took the chance to transfer as many versions as possible.

In truth, there is not a lot of resource for US NTSC VHS out there but here is what I know of...

A summary of GOUT synced Video, Audio and Subtitle sources - WORK IN PROGRESS
Time

Post 1 is now updated with as detail much as I know.

As and when I am told of any corrections to make or additions to add, I will amend that post.

The thing that suprised me was the lack of available subtitles.

I was also sure that a full set of "Commentary for visually impaired" were available and that either the DC commentary track or a modified 2004 DVD commentary track were available too.

My memory must be playing tricks on me!!

Time

Please help - this is a work in progress. All additions, corrections, proof, quotes, post links, NFO information is appreciated.....

One good thing about the 2006 DVD Theatrical Bonus discs from the Limited Edition release is that it has given us a standard - the GOUT.

This was available in PAL (4% speed-up) or NTSC (correct speed).

My interpretation of the term "GOUT synced" is audio synced to the NTSC GOUT video or video synced to the NTSC GOUT audio.

The trouble is, I have forgotten or do not know what other audio/video I can sync my favourite audio/video to.

The aim of this post is to list all possible variants of GOUT synced. I will list full DVD releases, audio recreations, audio re-masters, bit perfect audio rips, recreated subtitles and anything else that anyone else can tell me about....

There are of course those PAL GOUT DVD's that were released in numerous European countries so I will try to list those as "PAL GOUT synced" at the end.

Digital Source for the '77 Stereo Mix
Time

I havn't a clue if the Fox fanfare is right or wrong (my head hurt at that part of the thread!!!) but what I do know is that having watched Star Wars (DJ V3) with this mix was simply amazing.

I kept flicking back to the Belbucus DS48 and that seemed "flat" in comparison. Before where you could make out that there was music in the background was now alive and the voices/explosions seemed much crisper. R2-D2 was so clear, it was like he was in the room with me!

Sorry I am garbage in the language of sound comparison but trust me, this is impressive.......

I made some GOUT-synced Laserdisc audio files... (Released)
Time

I am interested in any bit-perfect rips (not standard capture/transfers) of any of the pre-THX diGital SOUND LD's that are GOUT synced.

The SWE and JSC, ANH 85 mix and ESB/ROTJ theatrical would be perfect.

Having listened to the raw Mallwalker rips of the SWE against the audio on two DVD transfer/captures of the sqme releases, the quality is worlds apart and essential to have in our quest for the best ever audio.

Maybe wanting the ANH 85 mix is a bit OCD - especially as we now have a diGital SOUND ANH 77 mix but I think these are all worth preserving in the highest possible quality...

Have you considered syncing to GOUT the ANH 1130-85 bit-perfect rip audio that Darth Mallwalker posted alongside the ESB and ROTJ you have already done?

Those three tracks (taken from the Special Widescreen Edition) and the schorman13 bit-perfect rip 1977 stereo track recently posted would make a full set of LD diGital SOUND tracks prior to the 1993 THX DC and Faces releases.

Having heard the schorman13 track vs the current best available Belbucus equivalent is a revelation.

I expect that the three tracks Special Widescreen Edition tracks would equally be a revelation vs the current best available transfers.

Also a question. Were the Belbucus 93 audios basic transfers or bit-perfect rips?

Answered my own question. YES they were.

The 1130-85 audio would complete the set of available LD GOUT synced bit-perfect rips.
