Help wanted: New guy needs some input for my own project - please - anyone can help
Time

I have amended my original post.

I was trying to do a potted history of where we were to where we are now. To do it properly would need a book writing.....

What was a mystery is now taken for granted and dozens of people have got us to this place.

I am with you on the grappling hook but others swear otherwise.....

If you look back at the oldest 3 or 4 pages of this forum, you will see how important the DJ V3 is. Back then, we had the SE DVD but nothing Original.

All crawls were "Episode IV.  A NEW HOPE"

We questioned missing audio lines

We argued about missing audio and which was "proper" Star Wars.

Was there a mythical "missing" Mono mix??

We argued even more about missing/different audio lines.

Did I mention the arguing!

Lots of people far more talented than me spent untold hours resolving the above over many years. DJ improved the flawed GOUT by adding to work done by g-force and others and basically brought everything together in one release.

What took us years to find out the long and painful way can now be learned by any "New Guy" in a day or two.........

I call that a result!!!

More on the audio dialogue changes here.

All we need now is video proof that Luke did throw the grappling hook twice after the first throw missed and the rest of the old arguments will stop (mostly)

If you cannot wait, navigate to the VIDEO_TS and try double-clicking the smaller *.ifo files and watch on your PC (VIDEO_TS.ifo I think). Windows Media Player usually works but I use a prog called VLC.

Back to your question....."..

From memory with Nero Express only it was something like....

Use the "Create Video DVD" option.  This would open a box with a pinky/red VIDEO_TS icon in it.

You do drag the contents of your VIDEO_TS folder into the Nero version. You can also drag the full DVD_ROM folder into your Nero box alongside the pinky/red VIDEO_TS folder. This will not affect how it all works but it is what the creator intended you do.

The AUDIO_TS is redundant......

Basically your file structure in the Nero box needs to match the file structure of the files on your PC. Then burn. The standard settings in Nero in the "Create Video DVD" option usually tended to work for me.......

Info: 1983 UK 'TVS' Star Wars premiere - anybody still have a recording?
Time

Compared to current VHS projects around here now, I consider how I transfered the tape that Jonno refers to as a complete hack job!!!! VHS to DVD recorder is far from perfect. Having said that, the tape played as a 25 year old TV to VHS recording and the DVD is no worse. It is what it is.

I am looking forward to seeing what can be done by Jonno with this.....

I too am still following this thread as well as any other possible VHS transfers that have been discussed.

I posted a list in another thread listing all the US  VHS releases in the hope that some of the releases that had not already been captured, might possibly get captured using this quality equipment.

This part of OT.com is about preservations and this is more of a preservation than some of the other bigger more popular threads around here.

Most software allows you to get a screen grab. Upload to somewhere like Picasa and paste the url into the little tree icon on the edit bar...

If you have details of where you got the transfer from or a menu screen shot, that would help identify what it is.

Finally, have you set up your PM's (Personal Messages)?????

It may be this one that has just been reposted......

Just to clarify terms, the term GOUT is specific to the 2006 DVD release (and any later box set re-releases) only.

A Laserdisc transfer of the Definitive Collection, whilst the same basic source as the GOUT DVD, is not classed as a GOUT set (ie not DVD) and such transfers are all of a lesser quality than what you already have?

Also wondering what some of my different audio options might be. I would really like the original theatrical stereo tracks and also the famed mono track for SW. Not sure where I can find them though.

Looking at most posts around here, AviSynth is the way to go.

The most definitive thread - butbthere are dozens more - is the Dark Jedi thread - all 132 pages of it.

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Original-Trilogy-Theatrical-Editions-Info-ALL-versions-SEE-FIRST-POST-FOR-INFO-AND-AVAILABILITY/topic/10550/

There are now 3 versions of this and a Blu Ray version in progress. All using the 2006 GOUT as the source. The V3 is particularly good as the video is amazing and it contains all known audio versions including the restored Monomix for the first film as well as a recreated 5.1 mix by another OT.com member.

Following links from that thread will give you a real insight of what has been done so far.

Good luck.

To be honest, the best place to start is Amazon or ebay and pick up the 2006 DVD release - the one with the "original theatrical" versions of the original 3 films as the Bonus discs. The NTSC US is the one I would go for and not a PAL version

Whilst these are far from perfect, that release is the best one available as a retail release and people around here are doing wonders improving the films, getting quality that you would not think possible. The acronym for this release is GOUT.

Beyond that, the newest 10 posts or most recently updated topocs usually contain the other current projects but is is worth doing your homework by going back a year or two.

Finally, welcome to the forum.........

According to the dvdcompare website, the German Blu Ray has a Polish soundtrack and subtitles. Is is very vague and does not say if all 6 films have that soundtrack or not. I would only believe it if someone here could actually eyeball the set for themselves and confirm what the discs contain.

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=19095

The same applies to this for the Quebec soundtrack and subtitles

Ignore that last bit as it is PT only. Sorry!!

Excellent work, russs15!

It must be how I am wired!!

My use here is not to capture, preserve, edit, clean up etc

I do lists and always have done in my time here!! I do them to help me out but they often help others.

ie  List of preservation transfers (very out of date)

List of PAL VHS

I am just happy if any of what I do may be of use to others..........

Meanwhile, I have changed Brazil from PAL to NTSC in Post 1.

I think that DVD back cover is the Spanish version......

Brazilian - O Retorno de Jedi

Spanish - El Retorno del Jedi

However, that image confirms my thoughts that the German and Spanish discs are the same but with a different language film name on the box.

Before I add both to Post 1, is Brazil NTSC or PAL????

EDIT:

Brazilian and Spanish versions both added to Post 1

Many apologies about the amount of information now in Post 1 as there is now far too much of it. This project has ended up far bigger than I ever thought it would be!!

As well as a Brazilian version, there are more.....

Brazilian

Uma Nova Esperança

O Império Contra-Ataca

O Retorno de Jedi

Spanish

Una Nueva Esperanza

El Imperio Contraataca

El Retorno del Jedi

Turkish

Yeni Bir Umut EAN 8697333064933

?mparator EAN 8697333064940

Jedi'in Dönü?ü EAN 8697333064957

The content of the Brazilian release will be confirmed should scans be posted and the Spanish release looks to be the same as the German release.

However, I am struggling to see what audio and subtitles are on Disc 1 and 2 of the Turkish release. I have added the barcode number in the hope that someone has more luck than me finding info.....

A summary of GOUT synced Video, Audio and Subtitle sources - WORK IN PROGRESS
Time

I have updated Post 1 with everything I have learned so far (watch this space) regarding the official 2006 GOUT releases.

I have listed the Video, Audio and Subtitle sources for all (current) known country/language variations in both NTSC and PAL formats.

The only actual "NEW" thing I have proven is the Japanese Audio and Subtitles from the Japanese 2006 release and 2009 re-release........

The hairy hen Star Wars V2 stereo mix has also been added.
