I discovered this show quite recently and it’s already become one of my favourites. As with many movies and TV shows in the 60’s, this was initially an attempt to cash in on “Bond Fever”, but it’s unique blend of sci-fi, avant-garde film techniques and anti-authoritarian themes made it one of themost memorable TV series of all time.

It’s hardly a proper Public Domain thread on a Star Wars forum without a Flash Gordon serial, not to mention the one with the most blatant tie to franchise.

Unfortunately I could’t find a better version of it on YouTube (the aspect ratio is somewhat cropped as well), however every episode is complete with intros and cliff-hangers, as opposed to the many movie cuts that exist of this particular serial. If you know of a better version online please send me the link in a PM.

Although Superman is as far from the public domain as a fictional character is likely to ever be (except for Mickey Mouse perhaps) the first cartoon serial from 1941-1942 is however, as are a lot of the work by Fleischer Studios (like the Gulliver’s Travels feature I already posted). This series is perhaps most well remembered nowadays as the main inspiration for the retro style of Batman: The Animated Series in the early 90’s.

As you can tell from all the films posted above, the public domain is disproportionately represented by horror and thrillers, however there are a few notable lighthearted films as well.

The first American animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is about as far from public domain as most films are likely to get, but the second is not.

If there was ever the perfect embodiment of the “so bad it’s good” movie, this is it. I’m pretty convinced that this film have become a cult classic almost solely based on it’s fascinatingly bizarre production history (summarized in the trivia section below).

You can’t have a thread with public domain movies without talking about the public domain movie, and what is essentially the birth of the modern concept of the slow moving, flesh-eating, virus-made zombie. For better or for worse George A. Romero created an entire genre with Night of the Living Dead and had the film not have fallen into the public domain from the get-go it would probably never have become the horror classic that it has become and instead been relegated to cult classics status like most other low budget horror films of the time.

Now this is a fascinating film. It’s essentially the first post apocalyptic zombie film, that is, except for the fact that the modern concept of zombies hadn’t been invented yet, so in this film a nuclear apocalypse creates a society of vampires–sensitivity to sunlight, garlic, and all. They are however more slow moving and “zombie-like” in the film than the original novel.

Since a lot of zombie film milestones are in the Public Domain I figured I’d post three of the most important films in the genre, starting with the first feature length film to ever use the word “zombie.”

Now White Zombie is by no means a great movie, but it’s still considered a classic among many horror fans due to Bela Lugosi’s hypnotic performance as well as it’s similarities and ties to the production of Dracula made barely a year prior. The film also has a reputation among heavy metal fans as Rob Zombie borrowed the title for the name of his band in the 1980’s.

White Zombie (1932)

TBH I find the word “filler” to be a really strange concept that gets thrown around way too much these days. Now I’m not trying to sound snarky or condescending or anything like that, but how can anything with a character driven plot and/or thematic relevance be “filler”? I can’t really think of anything in this series so far that have actually qualified as filler as I understand the word. Sure some episodes haven’t really moved the story of the Batch forward in any major way, but that doesn’t necessarily make it filler. By the standards that are attributed to the word nowadays we could say that virtually every episode of most old TV shows would qualify as filler as everything usually returned to the status quo by the end of most episodes. Or maybe I’m just too used to old stuff and it’s warping my understanding of modern media?

This is a Star Wars forum after all, so I figured a PD film starring both Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee would be of some interest.

This film is the perfect blend of basically every shlocky concept you could possibly find in a post-Hammer horror film, and the plot is utterly bonkers. Yet somehow it all works surprisingly well. Also, despite having starred together in several horror films at this point, this is the film were Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee shared the most screen time.

I think this episode is another great example of how cameos can work well for both fans of the other series and for people who are new to the cartoons. I really enjoyed seeing Cham, Hera and Chopper again, but it was so well written and relevant to the themes of this series that I don’t think this episode would feel to off to someone who’s not seen TCW or Rebels. That is, apart from the obvious absence of Batch for most of the episode, however I won’t mind if this series decides to take a TCW-esque approach to future episodes where the main characters can take a step back to let other interesting characters shine. And I also think making Crosshair the main focus, as far as the Bad Batch characters are conerned at least, was really clever.

Here are the four (out of a total of fourteen) Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce that are in the public domain. These may not be the most accurate adaptations of the Conan Doyle stories, but there’s a certain charm in these that I personally really love. Out of the four films below I recommend The Woman in Green the highest. The other three are OK, with Secret Weapon being a lot of cheesy fun as it’s literally a WWII propaganda film with Sherlock Holmes vs Nazi Germany. And if you decide to check out the non-PD ones, I’d recommend starting with The House of Fear and The Pearl of Death.

Definitely one of the best and most prolific films that ended up in the public domain. As was the case with most of Orson Welles’ films post Citizen Kane this was heavily edited by the studio, but it’s still a fantastic movie that’s unfortunately somewhat overshadowed by his other masterpieces.

I’ll start off with a somewhat forgotten pre-code horror/thriller that I recently discovered that has already become one of my favourite films.

The Most Dangerous Game (1932)

• Please post relevant technical information like the runtime, video resolution, and in the case of non-English films please point out if subtitles are available (don’t post movies if they don’t have subtitles).
• Movie serials and theatrical cartoon shorts can be posted. If you want to post an entire movie serial or “season” of theatrical cartoons shorts, please share a link to a playlist and not a link to every single episode. This is perhaps the most esoterically specific thing I’ve seen analysed in a SW movie, and that’s saying a lot with this fan base. I’m always amazed by what people manage to find in what is already one of, if not the most analysed films of all time.
