Anyone got experience with bin/cue files?  Using a Toast trick can get to the MPG, but even VLC won't play it on the mac side, need to try it out on some PCs.

Added:

2002.05.xx : CTP (3 bin/cue)

2002.05.xx : Cinema (ep2a/b.mpg)

--Might be same as "starwars.ep2cd1&2.mpg"

Have a lead on another RotJ.

I had lots of experience with VCDs and SVCDs in bin/cue image format, but that was a long time ago now.

I don't think VirtualClone Drive will mount them, but Daemon Tools used to work. Similarly, not sure if ImgBurn can burn these images - at least not the 2-track, mode 2 type of image that (S)VCD used. Try Infrarecorder or Nero.

XBMC and Media Player Classic and its variants will play them fine. I've noticed that playback support on newer standalone players (and the PS3) has been dropped, but older players should have no problem with VCD (SVCDs however may be hit-and-miss).

If you want to get the video off the disc, for example to convert to something else, you need to be aware that the DAT files (MPG extension on SVCD) have some strange file headers. You need to use something like IsoBuster or VCDEasy to extract a pure MPEG file that you can work with.

Also note - CTP is short for Centropy, so the relase you have added will be the same as Star.Wars.Episode.2.Attack.of.the.Clones.SVCD.TS-Centropy you have already listed. TS stands for TeleSync - no crowd noise! :-(

Disney's Sleepy Hollow re-edit (* unfinished project *)
Time

If you are making your own creative decisions in the selection and combination of shots that make up the finished story, then I would call it a fan edit.

However, in this case you are, primarily, attempting to restore a lost version of the film. Even though there may be some creative decisions about how best to achieve this, I would still class it as a restoration or "other fan project".

VHS to Digital
Time

The most important piece in the process in the VCR. I don't think you can buy standalone VHS decks new these days (avoid any DVD combo units), so you might have to look on eBay. For best results look for an SVHS player from Panasonic or JVC.

For a bit more cash you could get a used pro model, and maybe a Time Base Corrector (TBC) as well. This link gives more information.

For capturing VHS, any cheap capture card should be adequate. If you wanted to spend a bit more, then cards based on the ATi Theatre 650 chipsets get good comments.

Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?

Zion threatened to upload some of the raw X0 captures.
If he's gonna do that, I'd rather see the JSC ones than any THX/DC/Face

Laserman once offered to send me the X0 capture of the JSC  - under the condition that I claimed it was my own capture, so the rest of the X0 team wouldn't find out.

Obviously I said I'd like a copy, but unfortunately he never sent the discs. :-(

Now I need to buy a "proper" fixed Special Widescreen Edition LD to replace the one I thought was the fixed disc but wasn't.

DJ and ABC's Empire score-only edition is pretty fantastic.  It's not as cool if you don't watch the film in black-and-white with it, but it still sounds brilliant either way.

Not sure about any particularly good SW or ROTJ score-only tracks.

Belbucus did a score/dialogue soundtrack for SW. It's basically an isolated score, but in scenes with no music he added the dialogue and effects back in so that the audio wouldn't be totally silent during those parts.

He also gave the cantina music a treatment to make it sound more like a live band, IIRC.

It's available as a GOUT-synced PCM.

However, the NFO file got corrupted somewhere along the line - here is the "good" NFO.

You've got some characters in that .nfo which don't play well with things.

True, there are some code page 437 characters present, but NFOs are intended to be viewed, not "played with".

So what came first the inverse telecine or the chroma shift/avisynth filtering/video noise reduction?  It's been awhile, but do you recall the process?  And with all the color discussion of late, do you think the colors you modified towards were overly influenced by the laser disc?

I can't remember in what order the filters were applied. The IVTC would have been early on, and noise reduction towards the end of the script. I may still have the script sitting on my hard drive somewhere, I'll have a look.

Looking back, the noise reduction was way too aggressive. Tatooine's sand came out looking flat and textureless.

It's quite possible that I reduced the colour saturation to be in line with the laserdiscs; it also may have been an attempt to reduce the effect of the shifted chroma.

If the damn drugs don't kill me, they give me a 50% chance of still being here after 5 years, (actually it is either a 75% or 25% chance depending on the subtype, but the test to find out costs around $8,000 and won't change the outcome anyway, so I'll take the average 50% stat) - so with any luck I'll be still around when the BluRay/HD-DVD/3D version of the trilogy comes out

It is poignant that Laserman posted this in 2005, ie 5 years and 3 months ago.

We spoke via email a few times, and I had a huge respect for the guy. He will always be remembered here as the person who came up with the "GOUT" acronym.

GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

To answer for g-force - no, that's not possible. The reason is that the anti-aliasing function also doubles the height of the video. The following stage in the script crops/resizes to an anamorphic image with borders; I assume it's the size of the video frame at this stage that you have used to determine the size and position of your subtitles (is it the script in this post?)

One easy option you could try would be to add interlaced=true to every subtitle line. This parameter adds an additional blur to the subtitle text (its purpose is to reduce flicker on interlaced displays).

Beyond that, you would have to look at a workflow that involves using your subtitles on a blank clip, adding a resize line after the subtitles so that they then match the non-anamorphic GOUT video, and finally adding this clip as an overlay to the GOUT video before the anti-aliasing.

Question About The History of Originaltrilogy.com?
Time

It is said that this site was founded in late 2003 right? Around November 2003?

The site went live in March 2003.

Was this site founded on the knowledge the originals would not be included on the 2004 DVDs or was it founded for other reasons?

The aim of the petition was always to get the original theatrical cuts on DVD - it was originally hosted on PetitionOnline, then later moved onto the site

On February 10th 2004, Lucasfilm officially announced that the DVDs due in September that year would contain the Special Edition versions (little did we know that there were to be further changes). The petition received thousands of additional signatures after this announcement.
