The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

I’m releasing a Version 4 for ANH, in order to publish the best of what I can do with what I have. That way, in case hoped-for footage from TMWNN, Dat_SW_Guy, or Adywan never materialize, this project can be complete. Or at least not in limbo. The door will remain open to update these OT Custom SE projects if new source material compels it.

The primary difference is a new color grade, which I find more appealing and is based loosely on Adywan’s color corrected 2011 BluRay transfer. (Big thanks to DrDre for his color correction tool; not possible otherwise.) Used DSG’s Alderaan explosion, and TMWNN’s “I don’t like the look of this” to remove foreground CG dewback but keep the one in the background.

On Drive now, will pop up elsewhere soon.

^ It dawns on me, Nev, that for V4 I think you probably gave me that feedback and I thought “oh well I’ll just fix it for V5.” Then of course for V5 I said “I’ll just use what was in V4.”

Looking at both versions side by side, it did not look wrong enough for me to even question “oh yeah of course, we’re making this look like that because that is what it’s supposed to be.” The rest of the movie has efforts to make things look less blue-green, so I was probably in that mindset of less green meaning preferable.

I hate to bring this up again, but it looks like the final color grade got applied to the Ahch-to scenes as well, unfortunately, turning Luke’s ghost red.

I did have to fudge things just a little since I had a convoluted workflow with it and layers, so when we added shots back in it would have been a lot to redo. I applied a LUT to this portion but only to a slight extent, and faded into and out of it. I looked at V4 to make sure it was in about the same neighborhood of look. Do you think it’s way far off the mark?

V5 is now out. (It’s available on the Drive, and the other places will follow soon.)

Other than to eventually update the Rey Nobody version once the components from others are ready and available for that, this V5 marks the final update this project will receive.

That said, I am happy to make the lossless audio export available to all, and provide the ProRes output to those interested individually (because I can’t host it due to space limitations), so others can build further on it. But, I feel very much fulfilled by how this project has turned out. I do not feel like we were not able to do pretty much anything that we seriously considered and wanted to.

Once again, I cannot thank this community enough for the thrilling group effort this has been, and I consider it a wonderful capstone on the Hal9000 presentation of the main Star Wars saga.

Here are the subtitles I need translated. I sent a few people PM’s, but I am posting this here to increase the odds of getting them all done. A human speaker is preferable over Google Translate.

Also, if you have a copy of TROS with German audio, please send me a PM.

Lines to translate:

“Final lesson, Rey.”

“Leia sensed it during your training.”

“Ever since Skywalker.”

“But everyone’s only out for themselves.”

“Possibly some sort of spy!” (3PO answering “Who are you?”)

“Come home.” (Leia to Ben)

“Horrible things… have happened with this.” (It’s from the original movie, I know, but keeps me from looking up several subtitle files again)

“What’s troubling you, Rey?”

“But Leia feared the hatred that consulted our father… choosing instead to follow our mother’s path. Despite losing everything… and everyone… Leia always chose compassion over hatred.”

“Let Leia’s legacy guide you on Exegol.”
