The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

I was searching Reddit for posts of mine in order to relist download links and came across something nearly a year old in which someone tore through this project’s changelist to demonstrate how the author is reactive, doesn’t understand the film’s meaning, and essentially making the edit to complain. (I get why fan edits of SW put a poor taste into the mouths of some, I really do. And I could imagine such a change log reading that way if that’s what one assumes going in. On the other hand, if the original film had shown the Force ghosts and we worked hard to paint them out, I’m sure the conversation would be the same but merely inverted.)

Anyway, he raised one point that I think is useful to consider here. He said Poe doesn’t seem to respect or care about the Final Order fleet until Kijimi is destroyed. And that the civilian fleet has no reason to rally without this event.

Poe does seem to care, a great deal, so I’m not sure where that idea comes from. And the fleet arrives because… there’s more of them than the FO censorship has allowed to be apparent, and the legend of Skywalker has had time to have an effect compared to how the end of TLJ played out for the Resistance.

Eh, nevermind. Once again typing in this thread on my phone has functionally replaced walking or driving while thinking about these things. Ideally, any of these fan edits could be evaluated fresh, without assumption. But at the end of the day, the only target audience can be an alternate universe on opening night and not existing people who do or don’t want things to be different. A film that exists on its own, even if only hypothetically, rather than some sort of polemic.

Well, those shots have all already been done. And that’s okay, since you are far from the first person to submit that idea and I’ve declined to go with it.

Also, here’s the full conference scene, including “Captain Hux,” for everyone’s consideration.

If Sherlock is able to export it as music only (and get far enough info the credits to let me find a good edit point to segue back into the main source), I shouldn’t have an issue baking it in.

Or… what’d be ideal is to export the outgoing Rey’s theme and incoming end credits music separately, each synced to a reference video file for sync. I can then recreate the finessing of the original easily enough. (Like making the music fit the 5.1 soundtrack and blend with sound FX, but use your transition to credits.)

I mainly tried to smooth over the pickup note between Rey’s Theme and the End Credit fanfare. Oh, and shoutout to bbghost for helping me find the correct music clips!

BOOOOO. Booooo. 😂 (it’s been a while was that in the original soundtrack?)

I do think this transition is a bit cleaner. Has a nice punch on that first note of the credits. Good work!

Edit: after listening a few times I think what I like about the new version isn’t so much the punch of the first note of the credits but the last swell of violins from Rey’s theme. It feels a little longer and rises to a bigger crescendo, which I think is appropriate for the last note of the Star Wars saga.

The music is different. Originally they straight up used TFA’s music leading into credits, same recording even.

If people prefer Sherlock’s tweak, perhaps if he sends it along I can implement it.

I honesty think the transition to end credits sounds and feels right, moreso than letting the cue play out longer. Only other thing I could think of is mixing in the transition to credits from another film to get a little tiny bit more of a build up “bum buuuuuuuh” before it kicks in. I think it’d take ingenuity from someone else to do, though. But as is, I really don’t have a problem with it and I think it certainly could have been what was put out and I doubt anyone would’ve commented. At least not by that point in this movie.

And yeah, Finn and the lightspeed skipping. It’s… I think it’s the best solution, and a cleaner removal of the offending sequence.
