Does anybody still have the upscaled deleted scenes DrDre did a few years ago? (They were part of the ‘prequel fan editing care package.’

I have the scenes I previously used as ProRes, but I don’t see to still have the original mkvs of all of them. I would like to potentially look at various podrace snippets, but don’t have it. If anyone still has those mkvs, please PM me.

Excited that a V6 of this is happening. Would be interesting to see a workprint. Moving the ‘Plot to destroy the Jedi’ scene seems like it might address some of the issues I have with flow in that part of the edit.

I agree it flows much better now. The scene now takes the place of Anakin’s counseling session with Yoda.

I’d love to see you reinstate some of the Yoda/Palpatine fight, mainly just to break up the fight on Mustafar. But I know you have your reasons for cutting it.

Yeah. LOE has sort of an ‘Alien 3’ vibe to it: depressing. But, it still has some levity and gentle humor throughout. But LOE has a consistent tone which Yoda vs. Sidious would shatter. I do enjoy the sequence, but only because I can’t take it seriously and have to check out of Star Wars to do so IMHO.

Could you revisit the vocal pitch effects on the Battle Droid that says “hands up Jedi”? I get that you’re trying to make him sound less squeaky, but right now his voice sounds audibly deeper than any other battle droid in these films.

I actually lifted a snippet of audio from ADigitalMan’s edit. I’m fine with it as it is, if only as an homage to my forebears.

Here’s a weird potential idea. What do you think of making the brief “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” Millennium Falcon cameo look more like it’s appearance in Solo?

There’s nothing in the text of the film to suggest it’s actually the Falcon. It’s just some YT-whatever model freighter, as far as I’m concerned. The fact that Solo altered its appearance before ANH only reinforces this.

Thanks for the feedback and ideas. 😃

And I’m not really feeling the super short ‘Anakin in the Temple’ scene; it’s seems just too short to feel legitimate. But, I will try to work on the music and make my best attempt before giving up on it.

I don’t think the apartment scene works (the one where Anakin ‘feels lost’) for this edit. For one thing, the nightmare Anakin has is explicitly related to death during childbirth, whereas in LOE so far he’s only had one vague nightmare/premonition.
If this were an edit in which Padme dies, I would agree that immediately after the third ‘seeds of rebellion’ scene is the best place for it.

I hadn’t realized the insensitive timing to bring up removing Chewie. I agree that one could get out of the theater having seen this and never know it was Chewie. I’ll see if anyone ends up producing anything to help mask him, though, as that’d be nice. If not for the Holiday Special, it’d be fun to consider this Chewie’s father.

Well, I’m toying with doing a V6 for Episode I. Episode I occupies a strange spot in my heart, and I’d like to reincorporate some bits and pieces. In a parallel to Lucas, in all likelihood, having children may shift my sensibilities!
I’m not promising anything right now, but if I proceed, here are my ideas for changes. Feel free to suggest anything else or share feedback.

  • Maybe add a “roger, roger” to the commander droid responding to a hologram of the Neimodians, in order to include one somewhere (and possible do the same elsewhere if there’s another spot where a droid takes an order from the living being, but not the first ‘treaty’ scene which is already cut out)
  • Reinstate Jar Jar sticking his tongue out at Qui-Gon in Watto’s shop
  • Reinstate Jar Jar snatching apples with his tongue at dinner ( https://youtu.be/2df6x2YEeu8?t=33 )
  • Put in truncated “it’s working, it’s working” scene
  • Ditch the ‘morning before the race’ deleted scene in light of the previous change
  • Maybe put back in “let’s go left” and “I’ll try spinning, that’s a good trick”
  • Add “when in trouble, gungans go to sacred place” as voiceover as they approach the Gungan shelter area (idea from MalaStrana)
  • I might edit the podrace completely differently, ditching the musical score I added. I did it originally in 2006 and was fond of it, but it might be better without it and not edited specifically to fit the music

My color correction needs are very simple, but does anyone feel like making a LUT I can use to just tidy up the image overall? Just to tone down the red from the BluRay, and whatever else would make for a good universal setting to apply to the whole film.

After taking greater inventory of things, here’s my plan for V6 at present. I welcome feedback!

  • Move ‘plot to destroy the Jedi’ to before Anakin coming in after briefing

  • If he agrees, I’d love to use Siliconmaster482’s audio for Padme’s Ruminations, and his version of R2 versus the super battle droid (which removes the electric shock)

  • I could add some Force-choke neck cracking sounds as Anakin chokes Padme out. ROTS clearly establishes she’s all right, so that her death can be completely for psychological/emotional reasons. These sounds could help sell that she is seriously injured and could die from complications later on.

  • I will attempt, and see what I think about, adding the interior long shot of the massacre in the Jedi Temple and a closeup shot of Anakin’s face

  • I will attempt to use DominicCobb’s idea to remove lines “along with all the senators” and “the council’s next move will be against the senate” to help us track with Anakin’s inner thought life as well as a sane person could

  • Put back in the tiny snippet of Grievous laughing and coughing (once) while his escape pod flees at the beginning, partly to remove the awkward “the music budget ran out” moment

  • Angel has agreed to see about replacing Bail Organa being summoned via viewscreen to a Senate session with an audio-only version

  • This is less important, but Angel may provide an empty dashboard to replace Bail’s hologram as Obi-Wan reaches out via Grievous’s ship

  • Angel may provide a version of the Vader mask being placed on Anakin with the mouthpiece in the ‘right’ place (harmonica style)

  • I will play around with reinstating Boga’s introduction

  • Reinstate line “he’s too dangerous to be left alive” from Windu

  • If Mala is cool with it, borrow his audio for Anakin being appointed to the council, using an eerie Imerial March rather than Anakin rambling

  • Reinstate dialogue from Anakin: “The Jedi turned against me; don’t you turn against me.” Rational thoughts? No, but it tracks with his character at that point. (Anakin’s a strong contender for Borderline Personality Disorder.)

  • Due to the thematic, if not more, relevance for Episode IX, reinstate Palpatine’s lines, “…to create life…” and “To cheat death is a power only once has achieved, but… I know we can discover the secret.”

  • I would love to be able to augment Chewbacca’s appearance, perhaps by recoloring his fur to grey

  • Reinstate air traffic tower collapse in full as Grievous’s ship comes to a stop on the landing strip

  • I would love to see R2 and 3PO removed from the birth of the twins

  • I will probably reincorporate Palpatine suggesting Anakin kill Dooku, though with no hesitation or “dew it”

  • I will probably include a truncated scene of Anakin and Padme on the balcony at night after all

  • I will probably include a truncated scene of Anakin and Padme in her apartment where Anakin becomes suspicious of Obi-Wan and expresses his disorientation (no nightmare talk, though) (scene placed immediately after the third ‘seeds of rebellion’ scene)

  • It is looking very doubtful that the Yoda/Qui-Gon scene can be extended or improved upon, though I regret not being able to feature more explicit feelings of failure from Yoda, given his appearance in TLJ.

This will probably not be done soon, but I am taking a modular approach so that I can pick things up whenever I can and make progress.

By the way, it could be a good opportunity to fix something I haven’t told you about which I found out when making my alternate tracks: the march on the Jedi temple has a video misalignement where you can see a thin white line on top of the image. It’s very small, but I noticed this at some point when watching the sequence over and over again.

I don’t see anything in this sequence after taking a look. Could you post a screencap of the issue? Is it with one specific encode?

Oh, boy. I started this project with FCP7 and I’m going to finish it. The old project files are a complicated maze of nested sequences, and the program can hardly do anything at all with them without crashing. But, I did the equivalent of propping up the foundation while the building burns down and was able to copy the essentials and paste them into a new project. I’ll be starting V6 with the lossless audio output from V5, which shouldn’t result in any meaningful loss.

For each change I do, I will write down the timecode of a marker after the change point. Then, make the actual change. Then, calculate the number of frames I will need to shift the subtitles and commentary track, doing so after each change. I set up a project management thing to track all of this for the changes I intend to make. I have two very small children at home and have a great deal on my plate in life. It will be cumbersome. It will be slowgoing. It will not be worth it. But it’ll be worth it. Wait…

^ Thanks! I’d actually already reached out to him to ask about a few other of his mockups. He said he’s enjoyed my edits, and I encouraged him to provide anything he’d like to see used like those, addressing continuity and things like changing Bail’s summons to a Senate hearing into an audio transmission.

There’s a few things I half want to change but wouldn’t actually change if I had it to do again.
What I would do differently might be to keep Jar Jar sticking his tongue out in Watto’s shop and Qui-Gon catching his tongue at dinner. I wonder about the “it’s working, it’s working” scene, but reinstating it without the scene right beforehand (awful kids) and afterward (midichlorians) is inelegant.

I guess I’m nostalgic for TPM and should just watch it once in a while, even though COD as an edit is what it should be.

LOE is getting this treatment because of the Palpatine impetus and there being a few things I’d like to try to do better while I’m at it. I hope others can assist by providing some visual tweaks.

Yes, it’s just LOE that’s getting this update. There’s not really anything I want to do with the others. There’s a few trivial things with COD but nothing warranting all that work.

And Mala, I will export lossless audio just like I did before, so it shouldn’t be an inordinate amount of work for you if you’d like to update your audio mixes. And feel free to suggest anything! Certainly no harm in that; it doesn’t annoy me or anything.

There’s going to be a V6! The impetus for this is the presence, to whatever figurative or literal degree, of Palpatine in Episode IX. Whether he’s found a way to ‘cheat death’ or it’s just a mirage, I think its worth including a bit of dialogue that hints at his interest in immortality in Episode III.

Changes for V6, planned and under consideration:

  • Reinstate “to create life” and “to cheat death…”

  • Move ‘plot to destroy the Jedi’ deleted scene to before Anakin coming in after missing a briefing

  • See about augmenting or removing Chewbacca

  • See about removing the droids from the birth of the twins

  • Consider reinstating Palpatine prompting Anakin to kill Dooku (still shortened; no “dew it”) (LOE, perhaps even moreso than ROTS, has a throughline of Palpatine manipulating Anakin and him suggesting Anakin kill Dooku is in keeping with this)

  • Really try to reincorporate some Yoda lines about failure, maybe even dialogue from Rebels

In order to do anything further about Chewbacca, I would need some visual FX help. It had been determined previously that it would be extremely difficult to remove his bandolier. I wonder if a second bandolier could be added, to imply its a different wookiee. Most of Chewbacca’s shots have been removed, though a few remain. Luckily (?) his face looks nothing like the Chewbacca of the OT and ST.

This one should be much easier, but I would love to have someone assist by removing R2 and 3PO from the birthing of the twins (and shot of them leaving the ship to follow Padme to the medical center). This would avoid R2 and Yoda’s only onscreen meeting before ESB.

I will attempt what I can to extend the scene with Yoda and Qui-Gon, but there’s really only one shot to work with. If anything else can be contrived visually to extend the scene plausibly, I would welcome ideas or FX shots. (Rear shot of Yoda with asteroids floating in the background?)
The dialogue for the scene could go something like this:

Y: “Failed, I have.”

Q: “Yoda, my old friend… Do you feel responsible? Forgive yourself.”

Y: [Dialogue about him being too blind to see things or that he failed the Jedi.]

Q: “Come to Dagobah. You must complete what I could not.”
