The Worst Scene/Sequence in Any Star Wars Film
Time

Part of what makes the original trilogy so wonderful is its sincerity. Things are played as fantastical but grounded in earnest portrayals of these characters. The dialogue and pacing were unusual and somewhat stilted, having a distinct flavor. Episodes 7 does pretty well at replicating this, and it is noticeable when it breaks with that. Episode 8 does so more often (inserting sardonic jokes and quips which sound like they would fit in better in a Marvel movie) and never quite reaches the same mastery of the flavor of Star Wars dialogue.
This is all somewhat subjective, but I picked up on this during my first viewing. Worst offenders are Poe’s doing. “Big ass door” doesn’t feel like Star Wars in the least.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

Very good to see, Ridley. No need to rush, but we’ll move forward with delivering the final product whenever you’re able to complete it.

Someone PM’d me about whether ANH was available because he was going to introduce someone to Star Wars this weekend. So for anyone interested, I just uploaded a workprint version (without the hyperspace effect) to Google Drive to sit alongside the ROTJ workprint and completed ESB.

If Palpatine could come back from exploding, he is firmly in ‘The Master’ territory and there’s no hope of believing he’s ever gone for good.
I seem to recall that Lucas circa 2005 through TCW was adamant that Sith could not survive death. The one that appeared to Yoda was an apparition only.

And, yes, I know Lucas changes his mind on these things more often than his clothes. But, I hope he sticks with that idea and that JJ and company do, too.

Just a quick reminder that all you guys and gals can edit your own thread titles if you wish.

Go to the first post, scroll down to the end of the post, and click on the light blue ‘Edit’ button - where you can enter text in the ‘Topic title’ section.

Or ask a mod to do it 😃

I don’t seem to have this option when editing the OP. Could you perhaps retitle this thread to “The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was”? 😉

Bringing back Palpatine in order to allow Ben Solo to recapitulate Vader’s sacrifice from ROTJ in order to once again kill the very same being would make the ST feel pointless. It would seem that ROTJ’s ending was broken down to be kicked a couple movies down the road and then redone.

If they have to bring Palpatine back, I hope it’s a vision or something rather than a true post-mortem consciousness. If Lucas had any say in it, I doubt that’s what would happen.

And you don’t think really wanting the character to die in the next movie isn’t a thinly veiled expression of anything else?

I certainly don’t. Movie logic ‘within the glass’ is very different from the real world. Horror movies play up our desire to see people with flaws pay the ultimate price for them. If characters like Jar Jar or Rose trigger this response, albeit unintentionally, that’s a fundamentally different thing IMO than real-world hate spewed toward the real people involved. (That could be addressed by the Internet’s larger tendency to give people’s darker sides a loudspeaker through anonymity.)

Part of me would hate to see the ‘Wild West,’ frontier Internet die, filled with thousands of ‘Jar Jar must die’ and ‘Brak ate my balls’ sites. It’s a shame what the collective toll nearly took on Ahmed Best, on the one hand. But I’m not sure political or social censorship is a good response.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

I experimented with removing Sidious from Episode I but reverted back from making that change for V1 of ‘Cloak of Deception’.
For one thing, it cuts a considerable amount of runtime and, like Seciors’ edit, makes the resultant film rather short. It does, however, work well when viewing the saga chronologically, allowing for the viewer to potentially be in a position to look back and recognize what has been going on in secret all along. Within the world of just this movie, before progressing on, Palpatine reads as an opportunistic politician, with no ‘evil lizard man’ aspect apparent.
