The Resistance base in TROS is now on Alderaan.
The Resistance base in TROS is now on Alderaan.
I don’t think it works, good of an idea as it would have been in production. But I think it has to be accidental, as it was with Chewie, or its too much of a deviation for the remaining footage to feel congruent.
Just my take on it.
Here’s a new pass! I downloaded a new 3D model of the falcon and brought it into cinema4D and recreated the flight path. After chatting with snooker, it turns out it’s the same model he’s using. I think his engines look better, though! So we’ll see what options we come up with!

I love the clip, and the nitpicks.
Here’s a rough idea for changing the music in the final scene:
https://vimeo.com/415655381As nice as this is, I wouldn’t end the Saga on character centric theme. The Force Theme, as overused as it is, is perfect because it’s universal within the Saga.
I disagree, I see it as important for the forward-looking nature of the ending. We’re used to the force theme with the binary sunset, but now it’s Rey’s turn.
+1. It’s the perfect end theme to juxtapose with Rey Skywalker.
Just Rey is fine. 😉
(Seriously if this annoys you I’ll stop talking about it in your thread. I just think a Rey nobody edit isn’t really a Rey nobody edit if she’s still Rey Skywalker in the end.)
It doesn’t bother me. But I don’t see how that’s a punchy line to end on if her identity wasn’t an issue throughout the movie. I just don’t see myself going that route, but I’m know for conservative edits.

Personally, I don’t think the line “you wanted your parents dead” works. It implies plotting, not an instinctual reaction. Why plead with them to come back? Having Rey deliberately kill them really casts a weird light on her character overall.

Maybe if we buy him lunch he’ll record for us.
No, it’d have to be added to the entire film and I don’t care!
Glad to see you, though!
That being said, I wish I could rent out a theater and have a nine-day viewing of this whole thing with y’all. Hmm… maybe to commemorate whenever this is complete some sort of streaming thing could be arranged.
Probably not, though, right? Eh.
I’m glad that all the material generated here is open-source. Even if I am a stick-in-the-mud about some of them, “my” version won’t be the only one.
Man, even when working on TLJ my life was so different and I had so much time to just take walks and think through this stuff. I can’t keep it all straight with this one! I am so glad you all are working so well together and look forward to turning in an amazing final product as a swan song. Getting to sit down and address things in my NLE is just like “okay, execute the plan and GET BACK OUT.” I’m just so low on about all the resources a project like this takes, time… mental power… software that works well in 2020… less-than-decade-old-laptop… energy… a movie I kind of like to begin with…
You’re all so kind. I mean, what the hell am I gonna end up contributing to my own edit??

Hell yeah!
Well then, heeeeeeeere they are!

Yeah, I know the Falcon thing is an unimportant complaint. I do NOT want it changed to not go into hyperspace. Just thought I’d mention it. I STILL LIKE IT AND WANT TO USE IT OKAY GOOD OKAY
I don’t have any bright ideas, but ideally a way to handle the fleet would emerge, but I don’t see anything since they’re still gonna have those enormous guns mounted to them.
They stole it from us! We wants to chokes it!
This is NOT intended to represent a reservation I have about using the Falcon ending shot. This is such a nerdy thing to say that it would have rightfully been shouted down by people if this had been in the movie.
But…
The Falcon leaping right into hyperspace within a few seconds of taking off makes Han’s efforts to escape from Mos Eisley in ANH seem overly cautionary. (Doesn’t seem like entering hyperspace from within an atmosphere or planet’s gravity would normally be a good idea.)
BUT, it’s a perfect visual ending for the story. Just felt obliged to throw a neckbeard comment in for devil’s advocacy.
Well, a few reasons, really. With the prequels there was a substantial ‘textual history’ which I wished to acknowledge and I’d gotten used to seeing the prequels with alternate titles and alternate end credits and things like that.
While working on TFA, I assumed it would be a one-off and I wouldn’t be doing anything for 8 or 9. So I left the end credits alone, and did not want to alter them that way. Plus, the changes made to TFA were trying to be elegantly invisible, moreso than with the prequels.
Now, it would seem reasonable to alter them. But, it would take some work and it doesn’t really seem necessary. For the prequels I typed and arranged all the pre-scrolling credits manually.
shit … I couldn’t contain myself, fucking hair

only a test,
I have to improve it
Oh, my God. You’re unstoppable.
I don’t think re-ordering the scenes like that can work, and that’s part of my point. Rey killing her parents is… an interesting idea and could have worked if they’d made the movie that way. But I’m vetting it as a realistic option to pursue in an edit desiring to feel totally theatrically viable in a parallel universe.
Yeah the scene where Kylo learns about the dyad was the oracle scene, which was cut from the final film, so the theatrical cut gives no explanation as to why or how he knows about that.
Maybe as he holds the Wayfinder in the opening scene, it could go on a dubbed extended expositional monologue.
I can’t help but read it as Rey accidentally killing her parents, similar to what happens with Chewie. She’s frightened, calls out, “Come back! No!”
I guess Unklar Plutt would have just reacted with, “Holy hell! I’m not keeping you where I live. Good luck bringing me shit in exchange for food.”
Unrelated to these events or Rey’s parents per se (since they have no prior connection), Palpatine senses Rey as a powerful person and wants to either put a proactive end to her or bring her to him. Either way, Ochi is sent to find her but ends up dying from a snake because he’s a dumbass. He doesn’t end up killing anyone or anything, just stopping to take a piss and getting killed.
This keeps getting more complicated. Ochi’s ship shouldn’t still exist or look like it does, if Rey destroyed it as her parents tried to leave. If the ship is replaced in TFA’s flashback (and its appearances in TROS), she shouldn’t recognize Ochi’s ship or get a feeling about it.
Hmm, I agree that the hangar scene needs to have something juicy, and it seems pretty “duh” for Kylo to tell her Palpatine wanted to squash any potentially powerful Force user.
Tangential: Would it make sense to change Palpatine’s line at the start to “Find the girl,” and have Kylo Ren apparently lie to Rey that he wants her dead?
If Palpatine is then portrayed as wanting to bring the two together, it seems even dumber for him to be surprised about the Force dyad fountain of youth. (Well, not youth, but of being alive and having all your fingers and pupils and stuff.)
And I’d be down for a roundtable commentary track recording! lol
Sorry, no i did not mean to imply I know anything about why Ridley’s been absent lately. I have no reason to believe he’s ill or hurt!!!
I was making an ineffective joke referencing LOE, but inverted. Rather than saying Padme died when really she’s alive, it’s the opposite.
Never mind. I’m sure Ridley’s fine, and is just taking a break. At least, I hope so.
If RogueLeader doesn’t mind, I can post the links he sent. With this, the final piece of the puzzle, I can give things one more pass and begin encoding!
While I have closed the door on the prequels and will eventually close the door on the sequels, it will remain cracked open for the original trilogy. They’re… special (edition) cases. I can imagine a day in which new source material are available and ready to be stitched together in a NLE. I won’t need to do anything fancy, so I could survive within FCPX and use my existing audio streams. However, it would take something compelling to merit doing so, as Ridley especially has put so much work into the 2011-based ANH, and I borrow an entire scene from Adywan’s (720p) 2011-sourced ESB:R.
Wow, every morning when I wake up there’s too much to respond to just from my phone!
The Falcon as the final shot will absolutely be welcome, and it looks like that will inevitably be perfected by Poppasketi and Snooker. (Sorry for capitalizing your names.)
Ben’s ghost is similarly shaping up nicely! I agree about the lower body feeling like Luke’s, but its sound overall. It really feels like Adam Driver changed his clothes and became a redeemed Ben in that moment!
DOTF music. I’m not totally sure I’ll go that route, because it doesn’t feel diegetic. I wonder if the piece has been recorded again aside from what’s on the album, which we’ve all heard a million times, just to feel a little different.
You guys are the absolute best, and I’m very pleased to be “MC’ing” another one of these projects. My computer is old, and FCP7 barely runs on it at all. It’s an extremely cumbersome process demanding a great deal of patience in order to do anything. This project will run it into the ground for me, but I will leave the door open for the OT because I should be able to just rebuild the video stream using whatever sources are good at the time and leave the audio.
And about Rey Nobody. I expect that I will probably end up putting out a Rey Palpatine version and a Rey Nobody version. Feel free to devise your own mechanism for having your video player randomly select one in order to surprise yourself when you watch.
Here are the scenes or pieces that would be affected, unless I miss any:
Having Rey kill her parents would fill the dramatic void left by her evil heritage, shown through visions and maybe even Rey saying to Finn “I killed my mother… and my father.” She tells Kylo Ren she knows what she must do when he reveals this, which I would think should lead into her self-exile rather than continuing the mission of trying to get to Palpatine.
It’s a good idea, just making sure it can be implemented effectively in a fan edit. It really brings the whole ‘ruling together on the throne’ upward, making them equals in patricide and making the audience feel Rey’s fear of her own darkness. It also extends a bridge to make Kylo Ren’s redemption more worthwhile. Hmm… I’m coming around on it.
Guys, I have so many barriers to actually doing anything creative with this whole thing, at least inside my NLE. Your mockups and things are immensely helpful with this. If we hash things out and have a plan, i can absolutely take time when I can find it to enact them in my NLE, making it all smooth and integrated.
