Extremely nice.
Thank you! I knew someone nailed it, thanks for that.
I can’t seem to find the post of a video someone did of moving Rey’s line “nothings impossible” to after Leia hands her the saber.
Anyone have that?
Life is just kicking my ass. I think next time I can sit down (or kneel 🙄) to edit, I’ll work on the civilian fleet arrival since that should be fun.
Yoda’s theme during the X-wing’s resurrection makes sense. It harkens back to Luke who didn’t think he could do it, which was where his head was at for most of the ST, and hits home how he’s grown and changed throughout this story.
The music that played as Luke revealed to Leia that they were family plays as Lando reaches out to serve as a father figure to Jannah, and he may very well be. This is a bit of shorthand, and is the only thing that tells the savvy viewer that he’s not just picking her up.
I like the music as Ben dies. It touches on the big theme of the movie on the soundtrack that strikes me as a combination of Kylo’s and Rey’s themes, which is nice. I don’t really want to shoehorn in a love theme between other characters into that moment.
JEDIT: forgot which thread I was in…
Nope!
Also, this project has essentially been abandoned.
That’s cool but I’m not pursuing that sort of thing for this project.
We’ve got a finite number of changes to bring about, remaining open to new ones. But once all loops are closed (changes implemented without any committed ones remaining), we close in on at least a V1 release.
Does anyone have any sound effects laying around that could depict bursting through the ice wall, maybe some shimmer or WOOoooosh of trailing off into hyperspace?
$8? Eeiish. I don’t know about that transition for right now but it’s unlikely I’ll get to give it much more attention for now.
While we’re discussing the Force Ghosts scene, I want to ask since this soundtrack addition absolutely makes me feel like a hyped little kid; Hal, what do you think of the following from the redux ideas thread?
a quick test

The music feels very “epic trailer” to me, and feels out of place within the movie itself. It gave me chills too! But it felt like a trailer video.
Plan A to try at some point is what was originally scored for Rey catching the saber in TFA.
Please do whenever you’re able, that might help.
Nah, let’s not open a can of worms. I like the four ghosts we see thanks to John.
I played with the audio for just a little bit this morning for the TIE escape, but haven’t found any better of a solution. Movies Remastered, how are you handling the scene? Leaving it as is, sans Klaud or something?
This is the sort of tricky audio thing that i wish I had a whole morning to work on. It’ll need it!
The shuttle makes the most sense and I liiiïke it. Please feel genuinely free to make your own edits using this one, even just overlaying this one shot.
The original issue was “Hey, regular TIEs like that don’t have hyperdrive!”
With Vader’s TIE it would be “Hey, Vader didn’t take his TIE to go to the DSII, where did that come from?”
With the shuttle it would be “Oh, I guess the DSII explosion was reeeally overpresented in ROTJ if there’s ships inside that still work!”
And that last one feels better than the original TIE because while you still have to accept that the DSII ‘sank’ more than blew up, at least the ship he used was about as plausible as the TIE but has hyperdrive.
I bet JJ would’ve used Vader’s TIE if even he thought he could get away with it.
Well what’s the TIE convey? That he used a bad guy ship to fly out of his own bad guy persona’s gravesite? Or that it pairs with its good counterpart (the X-wing)?
Vader’s TIE says he is reclaiming something of Vader’s to put to good use, similarly to Anakin’s saber a little later.
The shuttle is just plausible, and has hyperdrive that a TIE like that wouldn’t. It makes sense for that setting. And in the shot it contrasts with the small X-wing like he had to hijack a bus or something to get there.
The insufferable nerd in me insists the shuttle is the better choice, as using Vader’s TIE trades one issue for another and grabs your attention to make you wonder how likely it would be for Vader’s TIE to even be there rather than whispering subtly about regular TIEs not being able to fly through hyperspace.
It wasn’t evening-me’s fault the dog ran off and go run over, it was afternoon-me’s fault for leaving the gate open. What was I supposed to do when walking into a situation like that fresh?
Well that’s good, I guess. I wish I could make that last note of triumph after the ice wall hold a bit longer, as would’ve been the case if that was the scene’s end. The TIE sound starts to build before it crosses over, and it abruptly loses the sort of rumble effect the foley had.
I feel a little more context about what’s happening in this world when picking up the story after 30 years, and after a trilogy set in the past that gave us a great deal of context, would have gone a long way.
You remember that episode of Star Trek where Kirk was split into a good half and an evil half?
I’m the half that was benevolent but indecisive. Since there’s been so much interest and things done, I guess I gotta be directive.
I like both of those options a lot. The Vader TIE says sometime but doesn’t make any sense, whereas the shuttle is less meaningful but goes further to reducing the “not making sense” aspect of the original shot. The original TIE wasn’t really meaningful anyway, they just showed us something common that Kylo found that was flyable.
Does anyone have a working link to poppasketti’s fun TIE replacements? I’d like to see them.
The audio feels pretty ugly to me; are you guys listening with earphones?
Does anyone have any sound effects laying around that could depict bursting through the ice wall, maybe some shimmer or WOOoooosh of trailing off into hyperspace? If foley can be identified the music wouldn’t be as problematic. (This is the kind of thing I’d spend an hour doing myself if I were able. Getting audio to feel right really does take patience. I may be able to at some point but I toss out my thought process in case anyone does come across something suitable.)
And kewlfish, it’s good to have you here! It’s a weird, arguably stupid thing we do around here but we… we like it. At least the 9000 saga will go out on a high note. And then I can get stabbed by Vader.
LAAAAAUUNCH
After TFA set the tone by drop kicking world building, the best the next movie could’ve done is split the difference.
We saw Vader arrive on the DSII in a shuttle, and he hasn’t been seen using his TIE since ANH. I know “realism” isn’t this movie’s strong suit anyway, but the shuttle just seems to make more sense.
Believe me, I’d have way too much fun with random branching if it were trivially easy to set up.
What’s the audio track used in this scene. Cus i feel like it fades out to suddenly
It’s “Falcon Flight.” I used the portion aligned with the burst through the ice wall and the portion that aligns with the transition to the next scene.
So it transitions from the film audio into the matching portion of the soundtrack to avoid TIE sounds, then into a later portion of the same music that aligns to what is being transitioned into, then into the next scene’s audio.
The issue is that the music goes right into peppy action time right after the ice wall thing, when in this context it should linger and serve as an end to the scene.

I’ll try that. Since the first shot of the transition can be as long as it needs to be, there’s less of a need to follow the original wipe closely to minimize loss.
